Title: Minecraft Host Names: yourserver.minecraftland.com 0.5 BTC Donation.
Post by: RchGrav on June 30, 2011, 05:27:10 PM
Are you tired of having your minecraft players needing to remember your servers IP address?

How about an easy to remember host name for your players?

IP address resolution services... Other DNS services or record types available upon request

Example:   creeperville.minecraftland.com

Service Fee is 0.5 BTC for 12 Months.

** Minimum donation has been lowered to 0.5 BTC **

or.... you could use a free service like http://www.dyndns.com/

They actually gave me a year free because I was, and I quote: "using this for Minecraft awesomeness"

Thats an option too...  Personally it would be cool to have a minecraftland.com host name.. but dyndns would work for the purpose of helping your users not need to remember an IP address.

Other players who I have created hosts for have actually donated 3x this amount ... as that is what they felt the service was worth to them.

As a side note... I can also create a CNAME record for your dyndns host if you would like to use a minecraftland.com host name.

Donations of any kind are put towards maintaining the minecraftjungle.com server.. which has been online since October 2010 w/ instant 24/7 access to anyone.

Oh yeah... I forgot that there are still tons of unregistered TLD's for minecraft servers...

Plus DNS hosting of $30/Year... plus having the knowledge to do so.  (Which I'm sure this community has 10 fold.. but it seems some server operators are not even proficient at things like NAT or port forwarding.)

This is a simplified service for anyone who would find value in having a host name ending in minecraftland.com.

What do you recommend as a price for a service like this?

Heck... the first person who could use this service can have it 100% FREE OF CHARGE..

We'll see where it goes from there. :-)

i can create 999 subdomains for free from my domain. dont know why you're charging. especially since most minecraft servers are hosted on dynamic ips, which means that either you'd have to go through dyndns or change it by hand.

dns hosting can be free: http://www.zoneedit.com/ simple and easy to use.

i just think you're overcharging.

Well.. if it had a tenancy to change I would suggest that they use dyndns.. and I would create a CNAME record for them..

Actually in a sense you are correct.. it doesn't cost me anything to add the records, other than my time to do so.

IRL.. My time is valued higher than the proposed fees... I think anyone here who works in field would agree.

Then of course.. having any technical skills.. in a community of highly technical people devalues those skills to those same people.
