New Code Released for Vlad Zamfir's Ethereum 'Casper' Upgrade

The initial version of the Casper proof-of-stake protocol upgrade from Ethereum developer Vlad Zamfir has been released.

Published on Tuesday, the code – following its presentation at the Devcon3 event in Cancun earlier this month – aims to fundamentally rework how blocks are created and propagated on the ethereum network. It's actually one of two simultaneous bids to develop code for Casper, with the other arm being spearheaded by network creator Vitalik Buterin.

Zamfir's take on Casper comes several days after the publication of a white paper, titled "Casper the Friendly Ghost."

The paper focuses on "correct-by-construction consensus protocols," seeking to simplify how blockchains achieve consensus in a "partially synchronous network." In other words, it's trying to reduce the overall complexity of the blockchain.

This approach differs from Buterin’s own white papers on the upgrade. Buterin had previously released a three-part explanation of how his vision of Casper would operate.

While Zamfir's code release may represent on a small part of a bigger effort, its publication signals a new phase of development that will bring ethereum a step closer to overhauling the infrastructure that underlies the network.

As explained by CoinDesk, miners today discover and add new blocks through the proof-of-work process, in a way similar to how bitcoin functions (with some differences that are unique to ethereum, like the discovery of "uncle" blocks.)

This energy-intensive process is a competitive one, driving miners to purchase power-hungry graphics cards – a cycle that has led firms like AMD and Nivida to report significant revenues thanks to the renewed interest in cryptocurrency mining.

Yet Casper would, if and when fully realized, aim to shift away from this model entirely. Nodes could mine by essentially having funds deposited– the "stake" in proof-of-stake – and held over time, generating rewards as the node discovers each new block.

This package marks the first of many pre-production release milestones along our flight to Mercury. This pre-alpha software release demonstrates the RChain network communications system and is available for interested parties to begin helping us test. Node.Hello will discover the RChain bootstrap node, detect other active RChain nodes, and form the RChain peer-to-peer network. The network layer is the lowest level component in the architecture that will eventually support RChain’s large-scale blockchain operations.

I've always appreciated the well roundedness of Rchain. I find so many projects  focus too much energy and hype on excessively high tps numbers and in doing so neglect other areas. I have high hopes for Rchain.

The technology of RHOC coin project is very good. This project is worth investing for a long time. It should have a good profit.

May dapps will have dependencies of many other dapps, as with our normal apps that interact with social media, 2fa, saas, etc, i dont even know. And how does this impact validation? Could it happen that we get big dapps that need 100s of shards to validate an interaction?

Like other project in the space one of most important things will be developers joining and building the ecosystem. Is there any way to follow developer interest in Rchain?

The RChain project uses a smart contract to fully extend the decentralized applications built on the foundation of the project. In addition, "every line of code on RChain follows a formal model, which is properly checked for concurrency and allows for automatic verification of highly scalable contracts." Modern technology produces good performance as a measure of the success of the project. RChain will be the choice of many investors.

I love the RChain project, the only thing that bothers me investment-wise is the number of unreleased tokens. I'm afraid that the increasing supply will keep the price down over the next couple years. But once they're all in circulation, and the network is up and running, the sky is the limit. I keep stocking up on RChain with the intention to hold until 2020.

RHOC is a good encryption money project, but the market overall market is not good, the price of coins is also in a downward trend, and the future development of RHOC is worth looking at.

Medha begins the hangout with updates from the dev team. Great progress has been made in the integration tests, resolving bugs, and in the node testing sessions. About five companies are in the pipeline for the Vancouver Deal Day, with commitments from a local coding academy to build a Rholang/RChain curriculum. The Reflective team has signed deals with three companies: Translo, Inkrypt, and Hellofriend. Other great developments are the communication protocol being rolled out by the H3Uni group and the release of the second logo concept from Girvin.

The team and advisor board is strong and dedicated. We need more projects of this kind introducing cryptoworld to new comers and making crypto more comfortable for everybody. I'm waiting for the market to rise and start mainnet up for the full implementation of the project

I like this project, it's a good idea. But unfortunately it failed.

There were good base for the project. It is a pity it doesn't meet my expectations.

Our project is still very active and going strong.
