Title: Bets are being taken on which next major retailer will accept BTC by end of 2018

Read an interesting article on Forbes.

There is a site called Betway Group and there are bets underway which retailers are most likely to offer Bitcoin as a merchant until the end of 2018. Here are their odds predictions at the moment.

In my opinion I think that Apple and Amazon odds are way too high. I also think Mcdonalds at 1/2 odds is very high considering their meals are cheap and due to bitcoin miner fees it would end up costing the meal almost double. Whats everyone's take on this?

actually last month there was several rumour to says Amazon has pretty near to accept bitcoin but very unfortunate it was not happened even Amazon official statement said they will not accept bitcoin as their a part of their service in the near future so probably that's why the odds for them was pretty high

No that was false. It was some stock promotor on Twitter that kept saying it. He said it in the past also and was wrong on each account.

Amazon wouldn't be bad if they went with a merchant like Coinbase to do the processing for them. However what percentage of payments will be in Bitcoin? Probably less than 0.1% and not worth it to them.

with BTC being very volatile even the merchants that have had the idea to turn on their btc acceptance will simply hold off until they dont risk having 1000 usd drop off their investment in a single day

It's not fair to compare retail vs airline... Walmart vs British Airways

I would bet on Argos or Amazon. If there is a lay option, I would LAY Apple and may be McD. McD are too small transaction vs current fees.

The juice/vig (house advantage) of the bookmaker is way too high for obscure bets like this. You are essentially
burning money by betting on any of these bets. Even if you would have some kind of insider information
you probably could only bet like 10 pounds on a bet like this. The odds are bad, the betting limits are low, which
makes this a horrible bet.

If anyone wants to bet on this you should set up a market at Fairlay where you would be able to
get much better odds and also more liquidity.

McDonalds is already rumored to start accepting payments in 2018 same as Amazon. The problem with Amazon is that their US branch does it their own way and is probably going to be accepting Bitcoin, while the EU branches like Amazon.de and .fr might not be so eager to do it. Right now you can buy a .com gift card without problems and .de or.fr aren't available. .com gift cards don't work anywhere else, although you can log in to.com with your credentials from EU. That's weird if you ask me.

Where did you hear about McDonalds accepting Bitcoin?

Was it on the /btc reddit which is the bitcoin cash reddit? They have been basically spreading lies saying McDonalds will accept Bitcoin Cash and not Bitcoin because Bitcoin fees are way too high for a Big Mac.

It was started by some Roger Ver shill and doesn't have any actual credibility from any Mcdonalds executives.

They may come up feature like first people need to fill in their Mcdonalds wallets one time with some bitcoins or fund their Mcdonalds wallet first and for the subsequent purchases no transactions fee except if people want to withdraw their funds back to their personal wallets.

I don't really see any of these companies besides Amazon taking the leap. Apple SHOULD, but since they can't control the currency, they'll be super hesitant to dive in.

As long as there nothing to make sure that BTC won't dip to crazy lows, then big companies like Apple and Amazon won't risk their successful business using BTC!

if stock promotor says that then which mean those rumour probably will true but i don't know what percentages of payments in bitcoin if they accept bitcoin as their payment prossesor but we see the current development of bitcoin then they should be to considering cryptocurrencies as their part

Yes, amazon are going to accept bitcoin soon but of course nowadaya there are many regulations for bitcoin due to its high price, may be this is the reason why amazon pending their acceptance. Or may be amazon are still build their platform to make sure everyone can't cheat on them, there is so many reasons why they are pending this

And btw OP what is this about? Is this the way to bet? And is that an odds? How do you calculate it anyway?

Where did you guys see that Amazon will accept bitcoins? There was no such news as of late. Before Alibaba accepted bitcoins but they banned it after a few months of accepting it. Probably due to volatility. Right now I don't see any major retail company accepting bitcoins so far. Probably it could happen when more people use bitcoins and the price stabilizes.

I guess the rumors started after amazon bought some domains related to cryptocurrencies.
But why is anyone sceptical about them accepting btc by the end of 2018? I can already pay my electricity bills with btc and much more.
I think almost everyone will accept bitcoin in the near future.

an interesting find, usually the bookies provide good analysis as they are risking their money
but the chances are none of them would accept BTC by the end of 2018
IMHO,the best chances have:
Argos
Easyjet
Amazon

McDonalds should not even bother,as their orders are usually under 10$,especially in some countries other than the US and Canada
accepting bitcoins would be more of a headache than a move forward
on the other hand,Argos is the one that could benefit the most along with Amazon
Esyjet is righ there too

Wow this is a nice bet but i am not sure what company of those listed will be the one. I know i read few months ago that Amazon was buying bitcoin websites. Now i am not sure if they did that because Amazon wanted to control them or if Amazon is going to accept bitcoin. If they do accept bitcoin it would be a major victory i think .

Yes I remember that but those domain names mean nothing, they basically buy domains like amazonbtc or amazoneth because they don't want some scammer to buy those domains and scam people.

Many companies do this actually. Especially since domain names are dirt cheap these days and you basically use it as a tax write-off.

I actually listed to amazons earnings call and waited for the bitcoin annocement, and it never came. Wasn't surprised.

It is possible to argue for a long time about whether large retail corporations will start taking bitcoin or not.
But all these disputes are premature.
The main problem (not solved at the moment) is the cost and time of payment.
We must admit that work is being done in this direction.
Only yesterday, there were good news on LN.
And only after the launch of LN, retail companies will begin to consider

I believe, that's so difficult to happen, because of fee cost. Ok BTC is so volatile, but the fee infeasible for  merchant. But anything can change if the fee  will changed.

Correct. It is impossible to happen given bitcoin isn't regulated and the big names certainly don't want to risk it all  with the money laundering policies.

On topic, the bet is stupid and there will be no winner since the probability of any of those names accepting bitcoin is zero.I would be slightly inclined towards 'Mz' had it been in the list.Steem already stopped accepting bitcoins, take that into consideration as well.

Bitcoin's long wait for the Lightning Network is almost over.

Announced today, the startups behind the three most active Lightning implementations have revealed test results, including live transactions, proving their software is now interoperable.

The findings, released by ACINQ, Blockstream and Lightning Labs, effectively bring Lightning (the mechanism many see as the best solution for increasing bitcoin's capacity) closer to public launch.

And while admittedly technical, today's announcement offers evidence that makes it seem like enthusiasts will soon get their wish.

Firstly, the Lightning specifications, in progress since last September, have entered version 1. These describe the rules of the network, comparable to the standards that prop up the internet.

While that's not to say the specifications won't evolve over time, they've now been deemed good enough to support the first real Lightning Network.

According to the founder of ACINQ, Pierre-Marie Padiou:

"This is the Lightning standard we've been working on for more than year. There's been a lot of work from us and from all participants. It's a big milestone."

Secondly, all the implementations have been shown to be compatible with one another, based on Blockstream engineer Christian Decker's over 70 tests, which he put together over the summer.

And last, but not least, as displayed with the two live transactions, the three main implementations of Lightning are indeed interoperable, a piece of the puzzle that developers have been working on since last year.

"We've been able to make successful payments on the mainnet that goes all around the world, and which involves different compatible implementations," Padiou said. "That's kind of a big deal."

According to experts, we have become very close
to the commissioning of the "lightning network." After this, it will be possible to accept rates for the speed of joining retailers to crypto payments.

I think amazon's bets is going to click as a process is already in progress and there is a lot of speculation that amazon is going to used bitcoin before end of this year but it could not happen but I think buy next year, 2018, this is going to happen and argos rate seen so high to me though I know little about them related to bitcoin. I have to say that if this betting become positive it then mean bitcoin may get to  $50,000 by 2018.

There have been lots of rumors but up until now they are just that, rumors. I will be very surprised if Amazon starts accepting bitcoin because virtually no major retailer accepts bitcoin (apart from overstock). If they did, it would be a big move that would eventually lead other companies to accept btc as well, out of fear of missing the boat.

Lightning network may play an important role in bitcoin’s acceptance. If transactions get faster and cheaper, there will be no technical issue impeding bitcoin as a method of payment.

If things stay as they are now, I think it is unlikely many companies will accept bitcoin.

That would be exciting if the news are true. Amongst those stores Im looking forward with McDonalds to he accepting bitcoin. It would be a new experience for customers. I wonder how would it work. Would the price volatility of btc matter? How would the transaction and process go? So many questions right now coz I really haven't experienced a btc transaction. Looking forward for this to happen 😃

For any of these places to accept Bitcoin you will first need to get over this high transaction fee nonesense.

I have heard a lot of rumors that Amazon will be accepting Bitcoin in the future. Anyone else hear this? Any truth to it? what do you think?

Talk f Amazon accepting bitcoin has been going on for a long time. It is still not confirmed yet. Instead Amazon should rather have it's own coin. I think this will only happen when Bitcoin gees more stead and altcoins have become more established.
