Title: New to cryptocurrency - where to buy Bitcoin and which multi coin wallet
Post by: jackotool on December 02, 2017, 03:04:01 PM
Hi,
I will probably use Coinomi for multicoins although somewhere it says it's not open source any more - If I want to buy Bitcoins and other multicoins - is it best to open an account at one of the online wallets where I can buy and then transfer immediately to Coinomi? If I do this way what online wallet/exchange is recommended? Any suggestions/ recommendations to get started!
Thanks!

I've heard lots of good things about Exodus https://www.exodus.io but you'll have to test what's out there for yourself. Don't keep more money than you need to spend on exchanges at any time. The rest should be in cold storage (paper/hardware wallets).

Welcome to the forum!

Can you give me an article where it states that its not open source? Their github seems active https://github.com/Coinomi/coinomi-android

For an exchange it really depends on you, where do you live? Since some of them offer their serviece in a particular countries. If you are looking to buy bitcoin without revealing much information about yourself https://localbitcoins.com/ is the place to go.

Will link you some exchanges (tho these are not the only ones): https://www.coinbase.com/ , https://gemini.com/ , https://www.bitstamp.net/ , https://bity.com/, https://bitsane.com/ , https://www.bitcoin.de/en?cr=1 , https://paybis.com/ , https://coinmate.io/home , https://quoine.com/ , https://www.bitpanda.com/ and list goes on...

After that you can chose one of these to exchange between bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, if you are interested in trading with altcoins TIP here better see to buy ETH or Litecoin and transfer to some of these exchanges since fee rate is lower as well as waiting time for your transaction to be confimred (since I don't believe that many exchanges have SegWit option): https://bittrex.com/ , https://poloniex.com/ , https://shapeshift.io , https://www.cryptopia.co.nz/

Some exchanges require ID verification or some other verification and also based on your account (if its verified or not) most of them have some sort of limits. You will have to look through each of these and conclude which one do you find appealing to trade on and don't forget to look at the price since it may vary from exchange to exchange.

if you have any questions feel free to ask.

lizardbtc posted a lot of links, so I'll just tell you which one of those I prefer using.

The best website or service to purchase some bitcoin depends on what country you're in. If your country is supported(info) (https://www.coinbase.com/global?locale=en) by Coinbase (https://coinbase.com), then definitely use Coinbase (https://coinbase.com). They're widely trusted and a lot of people use it. If not, go with Localbitcoins (https://localbitcoins.com).

I'm not sure about coinomi's security, but I'd personally prefer using Exodus (https://exodus.io). Or better yet, use a hardware wallet. They're alot safer than using a wallet on your mobile phone and your desktop PC. Lookup: Ledger Nano S (https://www.ledgerwallet.com/products/ledger-nano-s) and Trezor (https://trezor.io/).

Hi .. Thanks for your advice and every one else's ... I will check those links - I don't want to leave any Bitcoins or Alt coins online and will want to withdraw asap onto mobile or desktop - and yes hard back up or paper back up is good especially if I actually accumulate a significant amount! :)

Here's a the link to the article - https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/6rbzwm/just_noticed_coinomi_android_wallet_is_not/

Not sure if it's valid though? I'm in Hong Kong - the is also a Bitcoin ATM somewhere ... may take a look sometime -- There's a website called https://gatecoin.com/ - HK based I think ..

I also have some old hard disks with maybe some fractions of bitcoins in a wallet but I forgotten the user name/ password etc ...
