Excellent.  There's still the problem how to buy LR though.

+1 :)

Any chances of sending euros through bank transfer, like bitcoinexchange used to do? (By the way, anyone knows why they are gone?)

I don't get it.  There are matched entries under Selling and Buying, but no trade happens.  I also got an error message when trying to buy, but the bid goes in.

+1 good stuff

Suggestions:
  • Connecting to non-SSL http://www.bitcoin-central.net/ gives an unfriendly "access refused" message
  • Supporting Pecunix GAU would be nice

I don't get it.  There are matched entries under Selling and Buying, but no trade happens.  I also got an error message when trying to buy, but the bid goes in.

Same here, I got a partial fill then cancelled the remaining fragment.  I then tried variations to try to prod the trade, e.g., offering to sell below the bid, amounts smaller than the remaining buy size, etc.,

Adding BTC went very  well ..., appeared that I could use them to trade after just 2 confirmations.  Withdrawing in both LRUSD and BTC went smoothly.

Wish I could see the order book without authenticating first though.   Even if just a best bid / best ask.

Happy to see this exchange though and will likely use again!  Acknowledged the donation afterwards.  Good stuff!

That is because the seller/buyer doesn't have enough balance to complete the trade, this is an issue, I will fix it promptly :)

I raised the bar a little to 3 confirmations which was the original setting, do you like the "your funds are here, just wait for it a little more" instead of "F5, not yet, F5, not yet, F5, phew, finally". You can hover over the amount in the account history to see how much more confirmations are required.

Wish I could see the order book without authenticating first though.   Even if just a best bid / best ask.
Fixed, thanks for bringing that to my attention

Fixed, it now gently redirects

Supporting Pecunix GAU would be nice
Is there really that much demand for it ?

I don't get it.  There are matched entries under Selling and Buying, but no trade happens.
See previous answer, I'm going to fix this ASAP, it is confusing indeed, I'll inactivate orders when they fail to complete due to lack of funds and try to reactivate them after each successful incoming transfer.

I also got an error message when trying to buy, but the bid goes in.
You got the "server error, something went wrong, i'll eat your family" page ?
I'll check the logs and try to reproduce, thanks for pointing it out.

Excellent. There's still the problem how to buy LR though.
Yea, I know :(
I want to start supportign LiqPay, that would also allow total noobs to buy with a plain old CC. But I'm afraid that would be against their ToS and that I'd end up gang raped by angry users if my account gets frozen. I'll see when I've ironed the rest out.

Any chances of sending euros through bank transfer, like bitcoinexchange used to do? (By the way, anyone knows why they are gone?)
Maybe they got caught for not complying with banking regulations or sthg? I guess it wouldn't be too risky if I always maintain a <2~3k balance on the bank account.
You can donate by bank transfer though :p

I'll deploy the fixes in an hour or so.

Thank you very very much for your comments and positive feedback !!

Supporting Pecunix GAU would be nice
Is there really that much demand for it ?

Not as much as LRUSD, but there is a consistent level of demand.  It's useful because, just like bitcoin, PGAU is not a fiat currency tied to a nation-state.  And it's easy to implement in an automated fashion, once you support LR.

GlobalDigitalPay is another easy one to support; GDP's API works like LR's API.  GDP supports USD, EUR and GBP.

Additionally, with my bitcoinwatch (http://www.bitcoinwatch.com/) hat on, please publish
  • current "ticker" in JSON, showing last-traded price, current bid, current ask, volume for past 24 hours, etc.
  • full data for each trade, in JSON format

And something like bitcoinmarket's real-time data service would be nice.  I wrote some Perl to accomplish this, see
http://yyz.us/bitcoin/bcast-README.txt
http://yyz.us/bitcoin/bcast-server.txt
http://yyz.us/bitcoin/bcast.txt

or simply "telnet www.bitcoinmarket.com 27007" and add/remove a bid or ask on BCM to watch the real-time data stream.

P.S.  If you wanted to see your site's popularity skyrocket, permit trading between non-bitcoin currencies, such as GDP-USD / LR-USD, or GDP-EUR / LR-USD, or LR-USD / Pecunix GAU.

I see, I'll start adding more of these once I've ironed the first quirks out, I love Ruby on Rails and it's "if your test suite is strong, go nuts with refactoring" ;)

Sure, just give me a couple examples so I can just mirror some API you're already being fed.

Sure, just give me a couple examples so I can just mirror some API you're already being fed.

mtgox has:
    * http://mtgox.com/code/ticker.php
    * http://mtgox.com/code/data/getTrades.php

bitcoinmarket has the previously mentioned real-time API, and also
    * https://www.bitcoinmarket.com/bitcoin/fxchange.quote.json
    * https://www.bitcoinmarket.com/bitcoin/fxchange.quote.json.alt
    * https://www.bitcoinmarket.com/quotes/offers/bids/
    * https://www.bitcoinmarket.com/quotes/offers/asks/
    * https://www.bitcoinmarket.com/quotes/trades/

The ideal ticker would have, for each currency pair
* currency pair
* last-traded price
* last-traded datetime
* volume, last 24h
* highest bid
* lowest ask
* open price, set once every 24h at "beginning of the day" (== midnight UTC, probably, if you are open 24/7)
* previous close price (might be same as open price, if you are 24h and have no dark pools etc.)
* highest price since "beginning of the day"
* lowest price of "beginning of the day"

The first six are provided by all markets and are IMHO "required."

Trade data is generally
* currency pair
* price
* datetime
* quantity traded

but feel free to include anything else that does not compromise the privacy of your users.

Returning data in JSON format seems to be de facto bitcoin community consensus (only BCM is an outlier here, and only for their trade data; BCM's tickers are JSON).

And something like bitcoinmarket's real-time data service would be nice.  I wrote some Perl to accomplish this, see
http://yyz.us/bitcoin/bcast-README.txt
http://yyz.us/bitcoin/bcast-server.txt
http://yyz.us/bitcoin/bcast.txt

or simply "telnet www.bitcoinmarket.com 27007" and add/remove a bid or ask on BCM to watch the real-time data stream.
I'll look into that, it has its official github issue :)

Not sure how to parse that... is your exchange's source code published at github?

If not, what's your price for open sourcing?  :)

Thanks for opening another exchange!  bitcoin needs more competition in this area.

I don't mind opening some parts up.
I basically have a wrapper for the client that's based on method missing and making use of a nice yml file for credentials, ports etc.

Code:
b = Bitcoin::Client.new
b.get_balance user.id.to_s

Is an example use case.

Then I have a whenever schedule that feeds the transactions into my DB, updating confirmations every couple of minutes.

Nothing very complicated, i'll share it if you find some use to it, but right now all my time goes to smoothing trading out :)

If rumors are correct they are busy with a more mt gox/bitcoin-central style trading website.
One thing is clear, it are not problems with bank regulations :)

Why are there orders for 0.0000 BTC/LRUSD in the order book?

Title: Re: Announcing bitcoin-central.net - trade USD and EUR for free!
Post by: davout on December 30, 2010, 10:03:25 PM
Why are there orders for 0.0000 BTC/LRUSD in the order book?

That's because they're not removed upon completion.
Also you might wonder why some orders that could be matched still appear in the order book, that's just because one of the parties doesn't have the required balance to complete the trade.

So the trading works fine, it's just the order book that needs to get some attention.

Fixes are almost ready, they should get deployed tomorrow around noon UTC.

A couple of charts and all the interfaces will follow promptly.

Trade data is now available in JSON and XML at :
 - https://bitcoin-central.net/trades/all_trades.xml
 - https://bitcoin-central.net/trades/all_trades.json

It sports the same format as http://mtgox.com/code/data/getTrades.php, it just includes an extra currency field.

All timestamps are UTC.

Please PM me with an IP as I will eventually restrict the access.

Your site https://bitcoin-central.net/ responds with 403 except in browsers (even with other user agents). That's a bit annoying because bitcoincharts' admin backend won't let me add the URL to the database.

edit: http://bitcoincharts.com now shows trade data for bitcoin central

Apparently not.  I have an order (funded) which is displayed in Your orders, not in the main Order book.  A part of it was traded.

Different currencies should be separated in a more visible way, IMHO.

I manually re-activated your order. Don't know why it was still inactive.
Probably just forgot to manually update your data after deploying the code fixes.

I agree on better separation of currencies, I got confused myself. I can think of the following options :
 - Replace LRXXX by LR$ and LR
 - Color code
 - Tabbed order book

I like the first two, what do you think ?

I'd prefer separated tables for each currency pair. Sorting different currencies in the same table can be confusing (0.30 LREUR/BTC != 0.30 LRUSD/BTC) and you should expect a few hundred (or thousands) entries once your exchange gets popular. Tabs or two tables side by side should be more readable.

- Replace LRXXX by LR$ and LR

IMO, special characters are always a pain, and should be avoided.

  • '$' is used for several currencies around the world, not just USD
  • a standard keyboard cannot always generate these symbols
  • 'USD' or 'EUR' is easily representable on most world keyboards, and terminals
  • LRUSD, LREUR, etc. are what the currency provider uses

This. ISO currency codes are way clearer and you always know what to use.

Also the API changes a little bit, pass a "separated=1" GET parameter in URLs if you don't want orders with similar price to get aggregated together.

I also added some fields in the API output.

You probably need to advertise outside of this forum to generate more trades as otherwise you are cannibalizing the other existing exchanges.
Don't get me wrong. It is great to have your service, but it is crucial to grow the bitcoin pie foremost vs. fighting on market shares.

nothing wrong with a little competition. :) that said, these two things are not mutually exclusive. one can advertise here, and also elsewhere.

further, this exchange is foss... so that means people can set up country-local exchanges easily with this code, which will grow the bitcoin pie.

Advertising here in the forum is cool. And advertising outside - if done properly - can enable bitcoin to go through the roof.

There's a reason why sales and engineering are two different jobs. I'm an engineer :)
I think the open sourcing of my code is the best I can do to grow the pie.

Also yay!
First trades in cash EUR after some people sent cash in the mail/wires!

Also S3052, I think I might get loads more volume if I set up dark pools, which are basically in my understanding trade orders that don't get publised anywhere.

Oh yes, API has been updated to take EUR currency into account.

I think that, instead of pricing bitcoin in other currencies, you should price other currencies in bitcoin.

In the same idea, order books should orders to buy/sell other currencies.  For instance, if I want to buy bitcoins against euros, I go on the EURO book and I put a "sell" order.

This would make things much clearer.

PS.  It would also make the graph easier to read, since all currency prices could be expressed in the same unit.

yea, don't switch out... if you want, have a radio button that switches the pricings around... but i think the default pricing way should stay because that's what all the other markets do.

I think the logic at most exchanges is that bitcoins are a commodity, and you use a more established currency to buy commodities.

Ticker data is now available at :
 - https://bitcoin-central.net/trades/ticker.json

The JSON output is broken.  There is no comma following the "eur" data closing brace.  There may be other errors, but that's the one I'm seeing.

Most languages have some sort of JSON validation code that you could use, just as a self-check against this sort of problem.  I would run your XML through an XML validation as well.

Yea... I've been generating json by hand which was probably a bad idea, guess I should fall back to the nice Hash#to_json method :)
Also I'd need a DTD to validate my XML against, I guess the whole API is going to need some attention.

If you could fix this one JSON issue, I can get bitcoin-central listed on bitcoinwatch.

That bitcoin-central JSON breakage is my only blocker.

Fixed, please review the format, I removed the "pairs" semantics from both the JSON and XML data, if you use the ticker please update the parsing.

Sorry for the inconvenience but it didn't really make any sense to keep this.

I deposited LR into my bitcoin-central account yesterday but it doesn't show up in my balance, not even today... isn't it supposed to be automatic?

Hey all,

well the balance update should only be manual for wired Euros, Liberty Reserve handling should be 100% automatic.

I think I've introduced a couple of bugs when deploying the last version, I'm going to fix them this morning and will update everyone here in a little bit.

Title: Re: Announcing bitcoin-central.net - trade USD and EUR for free!
Post by: davout on January 28, 2011, 01:43:06 PM
Bugs have been fixed.

Adding LR and withdrawing it, as well as BTC handling should work fine in full automatic mode.

You are now able to transfer money to other BC users using their account numbers (sending funds to an e-mail address does not work yet though).

All balances should be OK.

If you ever encounter a problem, or notice that your balance is not what you expect please e-mail the support@bitcoin-central.net address, use it instead of PMs.

Sorry for the inconvenience and happy trading.

1 question

Why has there not been any trading since Jan 23?

Why has there not been any trading since Jan 23?

Because no-one has been willing to cross the bid-offer spread.

They've been crossed for a few hours at least. Selling for 41 cents and buying at 43, but no trade goes.

Yeah there is a problem.

Right now in the LREUR book there are matching orders at 0.27 LEUR/BTC but nothing happens.

PS.  I tried to reedit my order and I got this :

i tried to support your project by donating LRUSD to your bitcoin address
(i sold some btc by misstake for LR and i might be just testing ... anyway
when i clicked on transfer money + your bitcoin address from the "Feel free to support ..." line
 i got the following error

1 error prevented your funds from being transferred :

    * Currency is not included in the list

how can i transfer LR to another user account (yours, as donation)?
i would like to use it for balance rounding as well (give away 4th and 5th decimal places)
using the counterparty BTC address (already used with the bitcoin-exchange)
=> the key to match btc-address2bc-123 should exist

sending btc works fine. did not try to send eur to anther account
while unreasonably rate orders can be used for sending eur, they mess the statistics

anyway, great project and thanks for running the exchange
you got my +positive+ rating in the bitcoin-otc.com trust stats

Thank you !
You need to input my BC account number (BC-U313785) to transfer LRUSD to me.
Bitcoin addresses only work for bitcoin transfers, it will remain internal (not go through a bitcoin transaction) if the address is owned by a BC user.

i was getting that even for posting trade orders
usually first there is the confirmation on the create trade order
and second the notification that the trade order was saved and filled or saved and no match found.
Usually, when you create an order, it is executed and trades are created if matches are found, the order amount is updated accordingly, and it is saved for later execution.

i was getting this troll server msg after confirming the trade order creation
without seeing the confirmation.
What do you mean ?

today the (test) orders were cleared (where i did not see the confirmation - step 2 of 2).
I still have a little regression on some trade orders execution, should be fixed tonight.

could we run a test server somewhere with monopoly bitcoins for a few hours
before installing in production, please?
Yes, that would be nice

also my buy order for eur 0.345 was matched at a lower price
is that normal? the trade was performed at 0.3 eur/bitcoin. was the seller just lazy to type or is it a bug?
thanks. not urgent. just thinking loud

Yes, that is normal.

If you post a buy order, the matching orders are :
 - sell orders,
 - with a =< price
 - with a different user id than yours
 - orders for which the seller has sufficient BTC balance

The trade happens at sellers price.
Think of the price you're inputting for a buy order as the maximum price you're willing to pay for a single BTC.

i thought that when the server returns an error that the trade orders were not created
... did not pay attention until i found out that they were created and cleared :D
no harm done
Yes, this is not supposed to happen, it should be completely transactional.

Also sorry for all the people that sent e-mails that I haven't answered to, not ignoring anyone, just been really busy with hardening the code, integration of pecunix and real life :D

I've put down a buy order yesterday of 0.60 euro/btc. Now I see on the chart that it recently went down to 0.45 euro/btc, so I expected that my order was handled, but after logging in I see that my order is still there.

Bug?

Hmm, don't think so, the book looks consistent to me right now.
Would have been buggy if there were outstanding matching orders left.

What is the order matching algorithm? The highest-price bid orders should have priority over lower-priced ones. I remember there were bids above 0.6 EUR for a long time. A 0.45 order should not have slipped over them if everything was right.

So, the best way then is to overflow the order book with buy orders for all prices and delete them when one has a hit?  ;)

Convenient...  I have money there that I've been unable to withdraw for days. I understand it takes manual effort to process EUR, but LRUSD/LREUR and BTC should be no problem. It seems something is wrong on the server, preventing even LR and BTC withdrawal. If he's not going to keep the site working, he needs to shut it down and return everyone's money. Or at least let us know what he is going to do about it.

I'm actually planning on adding whatever people currency want by letting people emit e-currency of their choice and then just acting as the trading platform.
