Title: Help Using USB with Linux as HDD??
Post by: Coin-Girl 123 on December 05, 2017, 01:46:24 AM
Hello all,

I am going to be running Ubuntu from a USB and will be running only a miner and setting up pool and such on my rig. Will something like this be sufficient?? I know it will be very sluggish, but it should be good enough to run the OS and download a simple mining program and I should be good to go correct? If not could someone please tell me what path I should take?

I know Vosk does something like this with smOS. I want to do the same thing with Linux basically.

something like this is what I mean: https://www.amazon.com/Ubuntu-Linux-16-04-Bootable-Flash/dp/B01MR5OTM0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1512436512&sr=8-4&keywords=linux+usb

I know you can write your own, too.

Thanks so much all. you are all amazingly helpful

Think it should work fine, just slow

a USB disk is not meant for this kind of usage. they have a limited (short) life which will be shortened when you run a full operating system from them. so for usage as a miner, i am assuming the OS will be running day and night as long as your miner is running and that can be lots of reads and writes on the USB disk which can wear it out.

these days USB disks are so much more resilient and with longer life time but they are still not comparable with a Hard Disk when it comes to lots of reads and writes.

for something like this i believe buying a cheap HDD is so much better than investing it in a USB disk.

I have a 1 TB external hard drive that plugs in via USB. Could I download Linux on the 1 TB portable hard drive and use it like that? Have plenty of USB sticks and external hard drives. Just no like SATA HHDs. Would that work just for a month or two period??

Thanks again all!!  :)

yeah, the process is no different. you just change the medium. and by changing it you change the life that you get from your setup. and 1 TB external hard disk is more than enough for this :P

external HDD would work much smoother than jump drive I am guessing? Again this is just for a month or two, not permanent. Not ideal but it should all work fine, right?

thank you so much!!
