Title: backing up my bitcoins
Post by: KeriJo on July 08, 2013, 05:12:27 PM
Can I save my bitcoins on 2 separate computers simultaneously.  If so, how?  Preferably without using the terminal.  Thanks.

Yes and no.
If you only want to monitor your balance, no problem.
But if you send from one PC, you should transfer your wallet to the other, after sending.

Oh, and yeah; first you need to have the same wallet.dat on both PCs :)

Thanks.  I just want to have a backup in case I lose my computer. I don't want to use both for transactions unless something happens to the one I normally use.  I tried copying the wallet.dat file to my other computer but it didn't work (I got the blackened icon you get when something isn't right with the file on a mac) and I couldn't figure out which application to use to open it with.  It wasn't something I could open with the wallet application itself.  I'm not married to using my computer to back up my btc I'm just not sure how to do it the cold storage or paper wallet way.  Do you mean that you just write down the keys on paper?  I tried that but couldn't get the keys because I had already encrypted the wallet that I put my btc in.  Any suggestions on the best way for me to back up and any guidance on how to do it would be great.  I'm not really a technical person so the command line intimidates me.  Thanks.

Thanks.  I'm trying to figure out how to do that last thing you mentioned.  I'm using multibit right now and it's on a mac so I feel fairly safe it's just that some times I have to take my computer out, that's the security concern I have.  I feel more secure using the client rather than an online wallet.  I tried the first client you mentioned but I kept getting database errors so I switched.
