Title: 6x RX 580 8 GB with Corsair HX1200i
Post by: rizabbasi on December 07, 2017, 04:39:11 AM
Hi,

Would 6x RX 580 8GB [Typical Board Power (Desktop)=185 W] be okay for Corsair HX1200i with:

- AsRock H81 mobo
- Samsung 135GB SSD
- 2x 2GB DDR3
- Intel G3220 CPU

Thanking you in anticipation.

Regards,

Rizwan

Close to the edge but should be OK.  I'm running 5x total 480+580's on a 1000 PSU.

If PSU can't handle it, the system will do random shutdowns.

More worries:
As per Sapphire Nitro specs: Power Consumption <235W

All he need is undervolt and underclock the card to make then work at 150-160 watts (claymore dual coin).

A properly tuned RX 580/8 consumes about 80W on Cryptonight, 110-140W on ETH and 140-170W on dual ETH+xxx. So your HX1200i is just great for cryptonight, well suited for ETH only, and OK-aish for dual. You'll need to learn how to undervolt your cards of course, but then again no one in their right mind runs Polaris cards at stock voltage anyway.

RX 580 nitro+ has a maximum power consumption (TDP) of 185 Watt. You are using a 1200 Watt PSU. So this is a matter of math.
6x185 = 1110 Watt so the rest of PSU power around 90 Watt. Isn't enough for powering other parts. Although your Undervoltage your GPUs, It's too risky because you don't have enough spare power.

Relying on some random spreadsheets from sites like TPU is usually a bad idea. A beefy rx 580 card like the Nitro+ can draw even more than 185W when dual mining, here's the consumption of the similar card (nitro+ le) measured in gaming: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-radeon-rx-580-review,5020-6.html
And dual mining often puts at least as much load on the cards, sometimes even more.

The PSU choice depends on the conditions the cards will be used in. And no one runs Polaris cards at stock voltage for mining, it's just stupid. I've got a couple of Nitro+ 8gb cards, and they were drawing ~ 160-170W from the wall in dual mining at ~ 0.9V.

So yeah, if the OP is not an idiot, he'll do just fine with that HX1200. And more than fine if he's not planning to dual mine.

We are using technical data here just for reference. But yes, in fact, modded Polaris cards running Under 100 Watt voltage but what we are discus here is to find a solution. Let's see, what I'm saying is the save way to keep our part Of mining in the good condition and for an along term mining process. But if OP wants to use HX1200 it's fine, but I suggest OP using PSU with more extra Power. Such as using 2x700 or whatever for more securing all of your devices.

This is my own power usage test on a RX 480 8GB card with my own custom bios for that card ,hex edited , optimized to ETH-SC dual mining.
I posted some pictures about the real power usage of that RX480 cards with different stage of the process . You can also compare the Afterburner (or gpuZ ) reported gpu power usage to a whole vga card power usage in this topic i linked here .

Thanks. Valuable comments.

What do you suggest if I start with this setup; can I increase the power capacity by adding a 525W PSU pulled out from the Dell desktop? Right now, I don't know about the design of that but just asking about the possibility/feasibility.

With a dual psu sync unit, which are fairly cheap you can do that. The PSU would only supply two gpus though.
But as people stated above your single PSU is sufficient as long as you dont dual mine ETH+x.
I would also reconsider this and do the math if it is really worth it - just because many people are doing this doesn’t mean it’s a great thing.

Thanks.

What would be the bottom line for 1200W?

  • Is ETH + x is a showstopper?
  • Is x + x dual mining OK?
