Hi.

Time to build rig #4 and I want a nvidia based rig up and running within 24hrs. I mine Equihash primarily and have two Vega rigs already (They are sold out anyway).
I'm primarily concerned with efficiency (hash/W) and I've read that the 1070ti and 1080 are quite similar on this front.

Here are your options;

1070ti GALAX EX Sniper - $496 USD
1080 GALAX EX OC (8GB) - $525 USD
1080 Gigabyte AORUS Extreme Edition (11GB) - $533 USD

At the moment I'm thinking the gigabyte is the best buy. But some people say certain versions don't have ball bearing fans?
What would you buy?

That must be a 1080 Ti if it is 11GB, but not for $533 USD?

Personally, i'd go for the GTX 1070 TIs. Best bang for buck means quicker ROI and according to some people here it's currently the most power efficient GPU out there in terms of mining equihash. Check out VoskCoin's videos here in the altcoin mining forum. He built a 1070ti mning rig which has a hash-rate-to-power-efficiency of 4.7 (measured by EWBF's miners). Pretty sweet.

Really? I thought the 1080 was generally a rather poor choice, as far as hashrate/W goes.

I heard that nvidia p104 will be available by this month, then it is better for you to choose this card. Should be the best ROI among all nvidia series.

If 1080 Gigabyte AORUS Extreme Edition (11GB) - $533 USD is a 1080Ti based on the GB then I would buy as many of those at that price as possible. Probably a typo though as I would never think to seem them even close to 600 USD right now.

Yes the 11GB was a typo - apparently 11GBps throughput...

In any case, by the time I got there, both 1080's were sold out.
So I managed to get 3 of the 1070ti for a lower price - $480USD
Not bad to start with.

OK next question, what's the maximum number of these puppies I can squeeze into a Corsair HX1200?

optimal watts is often quoted at 104-110.

10 is way over at 1100W + mobo
9 is pushing it at 990W + mobo
8 is the safe man's route at 880W + mobo

So I should find a board capable of 8 or 9 risers.

Here is my take on it I would presume that the Gigabyte AORUS Extreme Edition is a 1080ti because of the 11gb memory if you could get it for $533 USD then go for it. Yes the 1070ti might be bang for the buck but its a 1080ti and only with a $37 USD difference from a 1070ti it might have a higher power consumption yes but the hash rates that you will get from it is really better compared to the 1070ti. If you will have a few dollars to spend then go for the 1080ti also as it have read in other forums the GTX 1080ti Gigabyte AORUS Extreme Edition have double ball bearing for its fans.

FFS where did you see a 1080 Ti selling for $533? Of course it was a regular 1080 with 11gbps memory chips (the original 1080s had 10gbps chips).

Your main problem will be not the max number of GPUs based on their power consumption, but the number of cables available from the PSU. 1200W might be enough for up to 9 or even 10 of those cards in theory (although it's not a good idea to use PSUs like this in the long run), but you'll need 9-10 PCIE connectors (18-20 of them, actually, if you bought those 1070ti GALAX EX Sniper cards), plus you'll need to power 9-10 risers. There's just no way to do it right unless you disassemble the PSU and mod it with your own cables (remove the sata crap, attach cables with better connectors like molex/pci-e etc).

I see what you mean. The Corsair 1200W has 6 sockets for pci-e connectors with one used for the CPU. It comes with 4 double headers, allowing for 5 in total = 10 * 8-pin connections.

So three 1070ti straight away use 6 of them - there is space for another 4*1070 or 2*1070/80ti

Could I power some 1070ti with a string of molex and molex to 8 pin adaptors? seeing as we are only operating them at 106W or so?

So the AX1500i comes with 10 PCIE/CPU ports. 1 for CPU frees up 9 double headers allowing for 8 double header GPUS.

I guess that's a solution for a mobo like Z270-P with up to 8 GPU's on it.

I could even afford to throw in a 1080ti or two with 1500W to work with...

You can laugh, of course, but I would buy an RX 480.
I consider them to be optimal for ethereum by the price / hash ratio.
Unfortunately now it is difficult to find them.

For me, bang for the buck is zotac 1070 amp version.

That's why people often use 2 PSUs per rig. You can get a couple of 850W units that will not only have more total power, but will also have enough cables to connect all those GPUs and risers. I personally see those powerful expensive PSUs like AX1500i as a way to power a high-end rig. Like when you run 8+ 1080 Tis or something, you could just get a couple of those 1500W units. But for 1070 Tis.. I'd just get two 850W or 1000W units (depending on the price you can get them at).

In addition to being able to sell it later at a good price, it also excels in mining because it carries some quality that makes it easier. Cooling has an interesting system that counts a copper plate which helps in dissipating the heat and improves the performance of the mining and also has 3 fans (assisting a possible Overclock). Not to mention that it is fed by a Pascal system which improves its performance.

??? All 3 cards in his list are Pascal cards. And he already bought 1070 ti cards cause the other 2 were out of stock.

I fully agree with wacko on this, but I would like to offer one more option
you can take one 400W PSU just for mb and some risers
the main power supply unit would be server PSU from HP - 2.4KW or dell

adapt it with cables  and use it.
this option will be cheaper then one 1500KW psu from corsair  + more power

If you go on nvidia gtx 1070 for mining is better to go on gainward phenix or palit yetstream, gamerock.
They have best cooling solution, very quite, and very durable. Price is almost same.
