Title: What if a person died with BTC!!
Post by: rddsd7 on December 08, 2017, 10:38:26 AM
What will happen??

No one will have the BTC address. Hence will them isolated?

In FIAT, people can handover money to someone.. So, i predict BTC will be disappeared gradually.

Fortune magazine recently had an article about this. It's a good question. I keep access to my accounts an encrypted database. My wife doesn't have the password. But I think I'll make a copy of it that she can keep on her encrypted database.

If a person with BTC and have a sudden death his/her BTC will still be in the network, unless he/she saves all information about his/her btc on notepad and can be easily access by his/her family. Like me all my online password are save on my pc.

It's none of your business, though... If that person owns number of bitcoins then it us up to him to secure the passwords and hand it over to his/her spouse just in case he dies... BUT if he doesn't feel like doing so, its none of your problems. If that is a huge amount of BTC then that's going to be a huge HODL! ha ha! Come on, man... don't waste your time with these kind of silly questions. Read some REAL articles in bitcoins so you'll get wealthy anytime soon.

each person should have cold wallet and hot wallet, treat it like cold wallet = bank locker and hot walletm is your daily wallet you carry., where in hot wallet you keep low amounts of btc and in cold wallet, you keep your most of the btc.

you make paper wallet of your cold wallet and give a copy to your loved ones as a backup/nominee.

in case person dies, then loved ones can still access btc from the cold wallet.

cold wallet / paper wallets  can be stored in bank lockers.,

I think people should seriously start thinking about how they will leave their bitcoin and crypto to their family if anything happened to them, in the same way one would leave a will, perhaps leaving the private key within the will might work?

My next of kin is my younger brother and he share all the information to everything that concern me. Infact he knew about my bitcoin account and I trust him very well. If anytime am no more he can continue with account and make use of whatever I have. He also share his own information with me too.

Bitcoin that we get will we keep in the wallet. I once thought how bitcoin I have collected but I die, we have to back up the notes or tell our families how to access the wallet to store the bitcoin we have, so even though I have died, the bitcoin I collect will not go away

If no one has access to a wallet, the BTC could be lost forever. Make sure your family can get to your BTC. Exchanges will give over access if you have a death certificate and some verification. They operate like a bank. But you if you have a wallet and no one has your passphrase and no way to get it, subtract those BTC from 21 million because they are gone forever.

So, that's how 21M BTC will be more reduced. No need to die, I saw somewhere, one guy lost wallet with 17,000 BTC (not sure whether scam, but it's possible). So better inform someone who is trustworthy.

If a Bitcoin owner dies without passing on the private key, his heirs may discover his wallet only to realize that they will never gain access to the wealth inside. To prevent this, the owner simply has to ensure that someone gets a copy of the private key by writing it down, storing it on a flash memory drive, or entrusting it with a commercial service that manages them.

It's true, one of the disadvantage of Cyrpto-Currency is when the user died and the keys are not handed over to the family or someone close will make their coins died with them. Actually there are estimated more or less a million Bitcoins that is lost due to lost keys and the owners are dead so we can do nothing about it.

Most Bitcoin users are actually haven't yet informed their families about cyrpto-currency and especially if they're holding Bitcoin then the worst fact is when they die, their Bitcoin will also died together. And that's really the unfortunate thing to happen.

No one will access the bitcoin, it will stay on the network. There are cases right here on the blog, where people lost their passwords 7 years ago and had bitcoin in that wallet and ask for help to recover the password but no one can help them. The best choice is to write down in a notebook all the data from the wallet and the rest of the account, then to notify two more reliable people who do you want to leave your bitcoin to.

There is no problem if the person left the username and password details written on  a paper. In fact, it is really advised to do so, if you have good amount of money invested. They can cash it easily.

Bitcoin number will still be 21 million. It will not change.
We have many examples of this and it is not just death that caused it. Computer lost or broken. Forgotten passwords or cannot find the private keys. All of this will stay in the blockchain but the problem is there is no access.
So what could happen? The circulation will get lower and that means bitcoin becomes rare. It is good for us.

The means of getting it back will be impossible just like the force bruting the private keys of satoshi.

Private keys is very important, once lost, its gone forever. So if you hold a substantial amount of bitcoins, it is advisable to store it in thumbdrive. This will prevent the situation where "this" particular person dies and the the bitcoin being lost forever.

If unfortunately a person dies with btc lying in his account it will the most unfortunate thing ever happened in his life. If a person dies and no one operates his bitcoin account the bitcoins from his account freezes permanently. If a bitcoin user really wants to pass on the benefits of bitcoins to his loved once then he must share his private key with them. We add nominee to our bank accounts, even to our insurance policy, then why not to our bitcoin account. The best option is to write down private key in a book with all the data from the wallet and then to notify two more reliable people who do we want to leave your bitcoin to. That`s the best option.

that's why it is very important to share bitcoin to your family member and your friends so that in case that you die accidentally they how to open your acc or leave a notebook that will help them to claim the money you have in the btc. If I were in the situation it'll be easy because my friend know my account and he's also a user of btc and he's a trustworthy person I know my family will get the money I have here.

As I know, if people lose access with their wallets, all the bitcoin inside will come out of the circulation. Similarly, if a person dies and has a bitcoin inside the wallet that no one knows about the private key or seed, the bitcoin will emerge from the bitcoin circulation of only 21 million. And this is what causes the current amount of bitcoin will not reach the maximum number, because it has a lot of bitcoin missing, and it can't be restored.

Your question is an eye opener for me.  It makes me realize that I have at least make a certain code in case sudden death happen to me (which I hope do not happen), my love ones can at least solve it that will lead to access my wallet and my bitcoin address. I think leaving a code to solve for them will give trill just like treasure hunt that leads to inheriting my bitcoins.  Besides, bitcoin is an asset that my love ones will truly appreciate when they inherit if that fate happen.

If you don't trust anybody your private key ncluding to your wife or husband your BTC will also die permanently. It possible if you are a wealthy person like Bill Gates (billionaire)and you have invested BTC at least 10% of your wealth and then suddenly you got a heart attack

It's true if a person dies with Bitcion and they're the only person that knows the private key, essentially that Bitcoin died with them. That's why there's a give and take with encryption and store of value, if that person values their family they would have considered writing a will with the Bitcoin information on it to pass it along.

This is a valid concern. Just like fiat, people write will to give their assets and money to their loved ones. But in crypto, we don’t have such services.

I have a copy of my seeds, private keys and passwords and pass it to my next of kin who knows about crypto. So in my case, my crypto investments will still be passed on.

It seems to me that if a person died then it is absolutely not interested in what will happen to his coins. This is the problem of heirs. I think that if you had a close relationship with this man then you will know about his coins and he will not hide from you the place where it stores the passwords for account access. If you don't know that it means unworthy of inheritance coins.

This reminded me of a story a work colleague told me: he knew a guy who had invested a certain quantity (on bitcoin) that only he knew, and the guy had a sudden health problem and died, the family probably never got access to it or even knew that he invested in bitcoin, because bitcoin in Portugal it's not such a big deal among almost everyone. He died in 2013, and probably invested in bitcoin a bit sooner than that, so he could have >100k worth of bitcoin that is now lost forever. Hopefully the family knew and got it, but i really dont think they did, considering the general public awareness of bitcoin at that time in Portugal.

Yes, but such an issue can easily be solved if the holder of the address gives his private key to someone he trusts. Ofcourse its risky but dying with all your btc is much riskier. In fiat such a thing is possible because the funds are lying with some central authority this is not the case in bitcoin funds are only with the person who owns the private key and no one else.

if the person died with bitcoin i think if he or she tell someone his or her private keys they can retrieve the bitcoin so if anyone not know about his or her bitcoin then your bitcoin will be gone that's gonna happen. Moreover i think if you already have big or a lot of btc i think half of that are cash out so it doesn't matter if the person died with btc

It depends on the trust level you share with your family, if you share a high trust level then you can allow some of them to have access to your account. One should be wise and very selective about family members with whom you can share your privacy. But if there is no one very trust worthy then one should cash out his bitcoin and make asset of it for his children, so that his bitcoin may not be wasted

We need to have such kind of person in our life whom we can trust. It is because of the fact that it is the private key which is the most important thing and you need to share it with someone whom you can trust blindly. So that in case of death, that person can claim those bitcoins on the behalf of that person. Otherwise, all your bitcoins will go in vain and there will be no one who can claim those bitcoins.

This is a very good question, it even doesnt come to my mind once. If possible share your private keys to your family. The most possible person that you can trust is your wife (if you still have a good and healthy relationship)
Next is your child. Or maybe some of the E.Wallet apps and website will support claiming process for the deceased person and ofcourse the person who owns the wallet should provide essential information for the beneficiary.

If you are holding Bitcoin wallet (say in the hardware or paper form) then you can hire an advocate to pass the legacy to your legal heirs in the case of the unfortunate incident of your death. I am not sure if there are any law firms in the crypto industry are providing such kind of services or not but I do feel a necessity for such service. We even might be able to use smart contracts for this purpose where automated API would find out your living status and pass the details to your legal heirs in some way.

If a person suddenly dies having BTC in his wallet without disclosing password to any of his family members, then those bitcoins would continue to remain unused. So,a paper copy of wallet's password must be made and kept safe in a place which could be reached by family members.Otherwise it would remain without any use for any one.I think that there are huge amounts of bitcoin which could not be accessed due to loss of passwords.

Ok, you teach them all things they need to know, and when they at some point see that you are nothing more than an obstacle for them, they'll get rid of you and have everything much sooner. Never make people 'smarter' than they need to be, and especially not when it comes to you 'promising' them a pretty pay day at some point. It's money that dictates the world, and even family won't hesitate to stab you in the back. If you want to proceed anyway, always make sure you use something like multisignature, which at all times requires several entities to sign.

That is what differs Bitcoin from banking system. If you die, it is highly possible that nobody will ever access your bitcoins. If Bitcoin becomes adapted by countries, it will be somehow regulated and there should be a procedure to follow in such situation. Still, I wouldn't share my private key or access to my hardware wallet with anyone. I would rather die with my bitcoins than give it to someone else (except charity and children).

If a person suddenly dies and have not shared his private dsta like private key, passwords, his bitcoins will become useless.
As we know bitcoin is very secure, Nobody can access his wallet without having password or private keys because most wallets do not provide forgot password link like we have in email and forum wallets. If you want your bitcoins to be used after your death, share private keys to your kin relatives

It is always good to share your wallet password, private key to a close confidant like your TRUSTED wife or kid by doing so there won't be any cases of lost bitcoin if such a person dies, it is very obvious there are a lot users who kept all their bitcoin details in secrecy this is absolutely uncalled for because those coins will be held  unclaim and wasted in the network.

This was a good question yeah what will happen to the Bitcoin of the holder if he/she died . But i think it cannot access by his/her family if they have not enough information about it. It was such a big waste of money if thats happen you invest then you can not even use it or your family can not use it. So maybe its a good thing if your love ones and the people you trust the most will know the info about your Bitcoin than it will going to be wasted.

It will just be a waste like all the thousands btc which are in the network buy no one can access is because the early adopters felt it's useless and simply decided to either through away their hardware or delete the wallet without making any sort of backup.

What's gone is gone but what can be done now is you should share all the important details and educate them how to access it.

If a person dies and his or her family have no knowledge of his or her wallet address and passwords, the bitcoin will remain and no one will access them. However, if a family member is aware of the wallet address, the btc can be accessed.currently, there are no laws that allow wallet dress owners to provide list if beneficiaries. I hope this will be considered in future when btc is globally legalized by different governments.

I think anyone who has invested a decent amount into crytocurrency needs to make sure that they've secured it safely & that they've provided a trusted loved one the ability to access that investment should something happen to you. I've shown my wife how to open & operate my hardware wallet & have written her the pin code & kept it safe.

What will happen??

No one will have the BTC address. Hence will them isolated?

In FIAT, people can handover money to someone.. So, i predict BTC will be disappeared gradually.

if a bitcoin holders die then his bitcoins will also dies if he dont share his password or private key to unluck his account and spend the bitcoins  and also it will greatly affect the circulating supply of bitcoin if those coins wont be spend or completly lost. that is why much better if we can tell our love ones or some trusted person about our bitcoin and bitcoin wallets so that they can open it immediately if something bad can happen to us. in my case i also been done this before because i give my password to my mother and i instructed her everything about bitcoin but she's still a bit confuse until now. this is also another problem for some of us because bitcoin is infact really hard to understand or to teach to some average person without proper knowledge on how technollogy works.

That's why you need to find at least one trusted person if you're not living alone. If you're a family, you should trust your wife and teach her how to use a bitcoin wallet and its funds. Otherwise your funds get lost forever.

I think its not a big issue because we can do one think like most of peoples done for other properties just print all passwords and keys on a paper and keep them safe place for one of follower after you because its very important for all they need to spend this money

Yes that BTC would be gone, but there is nothing to say that in the future safeguards will be implemented against this.

It is an interesting question but as the supply of BTC decreases, the value increases. The final block isn't due to be mined for over 20 years so there will still be a steady supply for years to come

In case a person who owns bitcoins die, then that means that no one can ever use that as it will not be accessible, unless ofcourse if the owner gave his account details to someone then that someone would be the new owner of the bitcoins.

If a person die then his bitcoins will be gone for ever.
Insted he/she can give the wallet address and password to someone who is trustworthy.
Or even a wallet address can work in this case, because there is a option for change the password through registered mobile number.

If a Bitcoin owner dies without passing on the private key, his heirs may discover his wallet only to realize that they will never gain access to the wealth inside. To prevent this, the owner simply has to ensure that someone gets a copy of the private key by writing it down, storing it on a flash memory drive, or entrusting it with a commercial service that manages them.
yes, I agree with you, so she should leave a message or notify her family, so bitcoin will remain safe in her purse with her family.

I would say to those have partner in life much better to tell them your private informations or any friend that can be trusted. Also, much better to share your information to those who can be trusted so that if it might happened that BTC can help on the financial assistance to support the expenses of your tomb.

Some people will say that is a dumb decision. I think if we look at the general public finding their way into Bitcoin nowadays, they are more likely to do so than the long term hodlers of way back.

I seriously can't think of a situation where I will allow any entity other than myself to have access to my private keys. If you want to set up a testament, anyone has to somehow have access to your private keys.

Another possibility would be multisig, but then you still always need to sign in case funds need to be accessed, where otherwise you can just hand over your private keys to people, which would save them some hassle.

Evryone wants to keep their btc safe in their wallet and thats why they dont share thier passwords and keys with someone and if that person died the money is also gone but its safe in the network until someone has acess to it but this is a good question so if we have our amount in btc we must have someone with the encrypted hard copy so that they can use after it for their betterment but choose that person carefully.

I would recommend writing your passwords in a secret book and storing this book in a vault at home or at the bank (I know.. the bank, ironic right) together with a USB disk containing the backups or your wallets. Explain everyting to your spouse, make like a short illustrated tutorial on how they can acces everything and sell everything. This way you have created a will for them without the need of a notary. Keep your cryptos safe guys!

When you own any kind of cryptocurrency, the responsibility of its management would solely be on you, the owner. I guess if a person dies having Bitcoin as one of his/her fortune, then he/she has definitely has the right to dictate what actions should be taken with the left possession. If a person dies without leaving his/her password for the wallet, then that just means you can't do anything about it but keep it there. However, if the person decides to put it on his will and not leave the password, then that's when you can worry about cracking his/her wallet open. I guess this is where laws should also come in regarding the handling of Bitcoin since it has so much value. It's safe keeping should be taken note off when its owner passes.

For now, the BTC amount the person had, will be lost. Many people also lost their password to their BTC wallet along the way, meaning these coins can also not be recovered. Overall, you should make sure, that someone you are close to (family, wife/husband, etc.) can retrieve the password just in case.

There was some speculation, that once quantum computing is available, all kind of passwords (banks, internet, and even BTC keys) could be retrieved in a fast way due to the increased computing power. Hence, sometime in the future, it might be possible, that people will "search" for lost wallets to retrieve the key.

If the wallet wasn't shared, or preparations made for it, then those funds would be lost signifying a reduction of the total coins in circulation. In practice this would mean each active holder would now possess a greater part of the total, with this competitor removed.

So, what is the problem. If you believe nobody, no one know about your digital actives. We will see coins of dead person in blockchain, but can't use it.

Solution of problem is the last will. You should bequeath your coins to friends and relatives. In another case, the BTC coins will be lost forever.

when a person dies stays in his wallet his earned money and nobody can get it unless there is a private key left over that the money will be claimed by your family.

I think , no one will know and get it unless he or she knows how to hack wallets for you to have profit of course wallets were reqyuired and I think this is secure enough for a person to be comfortable in using it, so if the owner passed away ,I think the bitcoin will be hold until no one can used it. Such a useless thing, so we should value our life more than any material we owe .

Naturally if you have a large amount of BTC you somehow tell your family how to get to the money, or - if you don't trust them - you lock the instructions in your safe.

On the other hand, in the scenario you describe, if there is less bitcoin in circulation, it does NOT disappear gradually. Simply its price gets a little bit higher and that is the end to it.

If a person did pass away with bitcoin balance still available in his wallet, his bitcoin would be consider lost in circulation forever, unless he left his passwords to his bitcoin wallets or the private key to someone he trusted, this is the only way to retrieve the bitcoin back from that specific bitcoin wallet.

I think Bitcoin is an inheritance property and is definitely written in the will of the family. wallet and passwords are there.
Yeah it's true, actually I'm also has been thinking like that about this, but if that's people doesn't had time to write or notify like as email, password, private key, etc.. related the btc's wallet to the family or closest relatives it would be wasted.

My catch is, Bitcoin will never lose its count. It will still be 21M BTC.

How will the lost coins affect the circulation?
-Lost BTC would affect the market value of BTC since the remaining BTC will become rare. Its value will move just like normal depending on the market events but most likely it will affect the increasing value of BTC.

It is NOT advisable to write the private key into the will for your lawyer or anybody from their staff to steal your money and you will never know who did that. I would MAYBE write it down in a closed temper-proof envelope or something. But never as an open text in the will, remember!

If a person who owns a certain number of BTCs suddenly passes away without leaving any e-wallet or private key information, no one will be able to use them. If they are lucky they can save on the computer or note in the notebook can use. Because of the security nature of the BTC, no one can hack Bitcoin. So if you want to keep your Bitcoin offline in the cold wallet and store it in one of the safest places your loved ones can find and use it.  ;D

That's a great question. I've thought about this many times myself.
Considering the value of BTC, it is very important that people treat this the same way they do other high value assets - real estate, cash, gold etc. so you leave a way for the family to get access to these assets.

If a person dies and he didn't give out any password or anything to anyone so he could pass it on then I think his hard earned bitcoin dies with him too. I don't think bitcoins circulation will be lessen if a person dies with his bitcoins though, since bitcoin still is mineable up until now. But the best thing antone could ever do is write it on a sheet of paper or have it laminated or something and put it in a vault around your house or something and give the key to your wife, husband or your kids.

When a person die with his BTC, then let it be an awakening to us. You can have it included on your last will. Or be given at least on your life partner. It is nice to at least have loved one you trust the most with all your assets. Rather than losing them and leave your loved ones with nothing at all.

That’s the great idea to give your family the bitcoin ownership after dying everyone must involve some trust worthy person from the family which look after coin after the investor and for this purpose share your private key or write some diary so that if investor got passed away then his loved one can get benefits from the coin and they can bear their expenses in good way after him so I recommend this to everyone.

I find this topic worth discussing for. Let this be a warning to all of us. We do not know when will be our last journey in this world, so, as early as now, we must have someone in our family to discuss with it plus a written private key hidden somewhere in the house so that when time comes that you are gone, and they will discover, all your efforts will not be gone with you.

Very good question....

I am working on a project called AFTERLIFE (L8RS)

I hope to publish a whitepaper soon with an ICO Q3 2018.

It is essentially a decentralised will writing service for cryptocurrencies.

If you die the coins/tokens will be held in escrow for a loved one of your choice.

It will cover most tokens and coins and we are looking at integration with other platforms (exchanges & wallets etc).

It will be easy to maintain and fully secure for you and your loved one/s (both sides of the system).

We have a unique set of parameters to determine if someone is no longer with us.

Watch this space!

This is the reason why the number of true bitcoins is still less than 16 million bits. This bitcoin is largely lost due to forgotten wallets and bitcoin holders but has died and does not let anyone know his wallet. At present, bitcoin is really scarce, which is why it is increasing in price now and in the future.

You should always have your private key/ seeds saved somewhere private for relatives, and it could be included in your will as your parting gift to them. If not, then the BTC will remain in their wallet, without anybody knowing about it, or knowing about the password. Basically, the coins go to waste.

It's gone. I've told some of my family how to access my BTC - like a will, but not really. Loosely, if I die, speak to to my friend. If you speak to him, he will talk you through it.

Otherwise, like if you lose your key and then can't log in...you're screwed.

That is right when you are dead and nobody knows that you have a bitcoin since you are keeping this from them then your savings will become useless, so better to have a simple note in your email where in your wife or children/family member knows. Don't be too greedy not to let them know.

If a person dies with Bitcoins and then he or she did not tell anyone about them, those Bitcoins will simply disappear just like that. And there are a lot of Bitcoins out there that ended up that way. Nobody knows they are saving some Bitcoins. Others may know but they do not know the details of where it is being saved and the details such as the address, private key, password, and so on. As compared to fiat, Bitcoins have the higher risk of being forgotten.

Then all of his bitcoin would be nonsense, no one knows his private key, so in short, all of his harwork earning that bitcoin will go to his grave with him also. That is why it is important that you have a white paper of your private key so that if your love ones or family see it, they know how to get your bitcoin and use it in expenses on their daily living.

In FIAT, people can handover money to someone.. So, i predict BTC will be disappeared gradually.

If a person with BTC and have a sudden death his/her BTC will still be in the network, unless he/she saves all information about his/her btc on notepad and can be easily access by his/her family. Like me all my online password are save on my pc.

In case someone could access to your PC with bad intention you will loose your all BTC.  :(
I have written all password in a book. I think it is safer than store in the PC.

if a person dies and has a bitcoin store it will not lose its bitcoin but it will not be accessible unless he shares his private key with his family can still access the bitcoin of the deceased owner.

I have a prediction on bitcoin. I just thought about it and my mind. In 2009 it has been possible to use faucets and claim that their bitcoins from the faucet site. since the price is not yet so high that many of them have neglected their bitcoin. so now the bitcoin's supply is lacking so bitcoin's demand increases.

If the person dies and he lefts his BTC then it cannot be retrieved unless there is another person that knows your private key or if that person can access your device that you are using in logging in. Another way is by giving a hard copy of your private keys to your relative or anyone who is related into bitcoin.

What if someone dies with btc? is it hard to believe that? especially if no one knows his password on his wallet because of his accents? so it's hard to just end it then you're dead bitcoin when you're in it? then no one knows your wallet passcide? so it's hard. so my parents know my wallet passcode. for if I just lose it and least know my passcode.

Actually fate can not be denied, if it happened just regret that we feel.

If the person dies and he leaves his BTC then it can not be taken,

It would be nice among our families to be given a copy of the private key for the brother or person associated with Bitcoin, and how much we have BTC, so the abandoned family get ya ... a kind of Inheritance from the person who left us from this world

The bitcoins would have disappeared in the circulation. It can only be accessed if a family member knows the bitcoin address and knows the encryption password to take the bitcoins away from the wallet. However, if the family member does not know anything about their bitcoins, it's definitely lost.

I don't think that's the problem? I think you are haha.  it will be dependent on the person who are engage in btc. If that person is open to his family and his family knew about the account then it will good. Because if that time will happen, the bitcoin will be useful to their family. If not, then that's his problem not yours. It may lost but who cares? Only the owner and bitcoin.

Yes it is still depends, so if a persons will died and love ones dont have a copy of a private keys all of your wallet of btc will also not open. We know we dont know whatever will happen on us anytime, so better save and let your family knows about your wallet.
That is so awful if someone put so much effort in earning bitcoins and he had a plenty of them and then immediately this person died of anything, these all bitcoins will be just wastage if he hadn’t told any person the private key of his wallet.

Such incidents have been seen on the news and this is happening with so much high rate. I don’t understand why people don’t trust their own families.

Unless that same person has a family or even a relative that knows or even have a smidge of knowledge about the encryption password, wallets, and address of this dead person, then they may access these and they can either continue on what the person left or sell it and use the money on something else. Otherwise, it's pretty much gone.

Of course, it is should keep this in mind, and it is possible to store information and backups of wallets with instructions in an encrypted repository to which the family will subsequently have access. By the way perhaps in the future, computing power will allow access to the wallets of deceased owners.

Atleast if your married let your partner knows about it...
Nothing to do if your single..... Maybe you can try to trust your parents..... To give them your passwords...
Because if you die and you any know your accounts.... Then probably your accounts continues.... Until someone will notice that your accounts had been inactive for the last five years...... Then the management will do something about it...  ;D

You're right bro, the private credentials of the person who died should give to the trusted person in order the bitcoin will still be part of the circulation in the network because if the bitcoin can't be accessible it will stucked forever in the network which will never be used as a part of the circulation of the bitcoin. Hoping that all of us here in the bitcoin community will give their credentials to the trusted person so that if the users will died it can still be accessible and part of the network in the bitcoin.

BTC is an online currency, if the person dies no one will make use of it unless he/she shares he's or her informations on BTC then that is when he can have a successor of his or her BTC wallet. It is just like having a physical property were you decide where or what will you do on your properties when you die, but just like any other properties as well it can be stolen from you from people who knows your secret files or in BTC, your BTC wallet account infromations. Hope this helps!

It's better to take insurances. Having a good security of our credentials is definitely good but we should also take a step in making those accessible for the one we trusted in life. Simple writing on a piece of paper and keeping it somewhere safe is okay. If ever we die at some point while holding bitcoin, we can entrust those to our relatives so that they will take benefit of that amount and will continue to help them even if we are not here.

That is a very good question, unexpected death of a bitcoin user. Then, you have to be ready and I suggest to store some things in case of these scenes. One thing is a notes of those accounts. Aside from the materials you use for your transaction you have to jot down the things to get it from, even a step by step if none of any person you want to live those know how to. The accounts can never be opened by anyone and no one of the people behind the system know about you and what just happened to you to do an action. Therefore your bitcoin will still be in case.

if no one has access to the wallet, BTC can be no loss forever. Make sure your family gets to your BTC. Exchange will give you more access if you have a death certificate and some verification. They operate like banks. But you have a wallet and no one has your passphrase and there is no way to get it.

If a person dies without anyone knowing his/her BTC address and other security passwords then I guess, it'll just be there and probably will belong to those missing BTC values. Hi there rddsd7! The same happen when a bank customer with millions in his account died and no one from his family or relative knows the account. The bank would send a notice to the account holders address and when no ones gain interest, the bank would then close the account and possibly take over the cash deposit. Thus, in bitcoin; when the wallet address holder dies, there is a possibility that the wallet company could take over the bitcoins. As a lesson, always tell someone, like your family about the bitcoin wallets and how to cash out those coins when time comes.  ;)

I think you are right. Since the private keys are not known to others except the holder of the wallet, there will be no way to access wallet and that means the bitcoins in it are lost forever.
The only prevention to this problem is if the private keys are shared with a trusted kin.

If someone dies with Btc and no one knows the address and the key word, then it is like a treasure in the earth and will never be found.
Maybe only the miners who can find it but it requires a very heavy struggle. But I think it is also impossible if the miners penetrate someone's wallet, so make sure the bitcoin as I said that bitcoin is like a treasure trove neatly and swallowed by the earth and will never be found.

Actually it’s a matter of money and no one want to make its useless if he is alive or dead the best option is that you must give your I’d and password to one of you family member in case of your death they can use it and I think it’s a good idea to save your money because if you will not give your I’d to your trust worthy so all your money can be finished so we need share our I’d to someone in order they can continue with bitcoin.

Not may be, rather for sure. There should be at least someone who knows about the number of bitcoin you own and all other details. Even if you don’t want to share the password of your wallet, simply let him or her know about the bitcoin you own and keep your password written on page at secret place.

In emergency, you may ask them to check that place for rest of the details. Bitcoin is great asset to be transferred to next generations.

I don't think that that bitcoin will be still usable since no one knows the private key or anything that can be used to open the bitcoin wallet and transfer it into someone's bitcoin wallet. Also, even if a lot of people know the bitcoin address, it will still be gone forever since you can't just open a bitcoin wallet using a bitcoin address.

One can share the keys with multiple people and have them somehow get together to access the bitcoins. One way is: share pieces of your private key to n people and keep the last one with you, in a safe/locker. When you die make sure that the key is passed on to someone.

There are people already claiming than around 25% of bitcoins are lost. The reasons varies and include people storing on their computer and then throwing away the computer, forgetting how to access their private keys, dying without providing anyone access to their private keys, etc.

What will happen??

No one will have the BTC address. Hence will them isolated?

In FIAT, people can handover money to someone.. So, i predict BTC will be disappeared gradually.

Its not at all impossible to pass BTC down, also they may get stolen if early encryption proves flawed or too weak to handle advanced computers.

Well, I don't know if there is a means to decode bitcoins that are inactive; belonging to someone that is dead. I feel if the person didn't inform anyone of his cryptocurrency assets, when anything happens to him or her that will definitely be a loss to that asset. I have really thought of it personally on numerous bitcoins that must have been lost due to people's death and not traceable. I do hope in the later years, that the blockchain will develop a means of tracking all these losses.

Actually , the amount of bitcoin held in cold storage is much more bigger than you think , and will certainly be much more bigger than the one that will be lost of it's owners die or disappear or something . Estimations says that more than 20% of bitcoins are either in lost offline wallets (like the guy who lost 7.5k bitcoins in a hard drive that he threw by mistake in a giant dumpster ) or that 1 million bitcoins that people think Satooshi Nakamoto the presumed bitcoin inventor kept for him self , or just other wallets which owners lost access to ..
You'll need to tell at least one of your friends or relatives about your bitcoin thing tho , and let him know how to access your wallet in case of something bad happens to you or that you'll be needing money from your wallet , that can be a life saving measure to take ..

Yes, but we have to give information to family or trusted person, before we give information then we must enable 2FA feature that is from SMS mobile phone or Google Authenticator which is in our smartphone.

If you have a Nano Ledger or a Trezor, you can leave instructions on how to extract the coins there. This is probably the safest way to do that. Unless you die without having prepared yourself for that.

I think the bitcoin will stay in the wallet and if the Bitcoin Wallet Service see a non-activity to its records, they could screen it and of late lead an examination as a large portion of the services have KYC, in this manner could play out a thorough search. For the situation they found the record holder is dead, they could grab the bitcoins and store it in their to grab list. I never read something about it yet it is only my hypothesis in that specific situation.

We must be prepared for what ever happens to us.

A lot of people have died and their money (fiat) was lost in a pot in a garden or thrown away in some old mattress. It has happened and will happen no matter if it is fiat or bitcoin.

What you need to do is tell your family how they can get to your funds, and it holds with both fiat and bitcoin all right.

Well if someone had a sudden death his bitcoin will remain in the blockchain and will be forever be lost with no one to access his private keys. But if that person entrusted his credentials to someone he loves like a wife, children or parents then the bitcoin that has been left behind by that person will be use. This is why blockchain is unhackable your btc's is safe but it has it's pros and cons to.

Because the security design in the cryptographic ecosystem focuses on protecting users' wealth, there is a risk of losing wealth in situations such as death and disability.
If the personal account's password is lost, including their email login, the property of such people continues to exist in the encrypted world, but it will never be found.

i think if the person die with BTC, then it will disappear together with the him or her. Unless if that person pass the password  to any of the family member before the person died but if not, then heirs cant claim the money from bitcoin. We are aware that bitcoin is a form of money in a digital world or in a virtual world and is being protected by a cryptography.  In which cryptography protects the data from the theft or hacker online. It is then impossible to retrieve the password of the dead person. So i guess this is somewhat a lesson to be consider. We all gonna die, we just have to update our last will testaments specially for those who has plenty of money in the bank or those who has big bitcoin savings to pass the password or private key to one of your family member or to put in your last will which is protected by an attorney.

You will lose access to those bitcoins unless the private key was stored somewhere on a computer or phone (possibility of course). But maybe one day there will be quantum computers that can hack into old wallets, I'm sure there'd need to be a hardfork update to prevent that and all the old ones would be left in risk.

Bitcoin was designed for personal benefits, because not like banks that your account have beneficiary bitcoin or crypto currency have no beneficiary. Like what others said if the owners of the accounts shared their password together with the other information, there's a possibility that the family of the died owners were get the amount save in their accounts.

bitcoins are  protected by unbreakable cryptography.this makes it a secure way to store wealth but also creates the risk that when owners die, their digital currency will be out of reach forever.
If a bitcoin owner dies without passing on the private key, his heirs may discover his wallet only to realize that they will never gain access to the wealth inside. to prevent this, the owner simply has to ensure that someone gets a copy of the private key by writing it down, or entrusting it with a commercial service that manages them.

Thanks for coming up with this topic. I had never thought of that before. If you had never give at least you private keys to the other person, your btc would be isolated forever. To address this problem, i think i will create one more BTC address for one of my family member i can rely on and split some of my BTC to his/her address. It's better than got all of my BTC locked forever.
Or maybe i will give them a clue on how to unlock my btc address if i died. For example, i will write down on a paper about how to access my wallet and full tutorial to convert it into fiat. Then i will store that paper in a certain place. If i died, my family most likely will clean up my room and hope they will find it.

The exception to this is when quantum computing or some other danger/risk becomes real.  Lost/stolen bitcoins will be "redeemed" by hackers.  Not by their intended recipients.

If the person died without entrusting the private keys to anyone, it cannot be moved anymore, it will just sit there forever. Although it will not affect the market unless you have a very large amount of bitcoins, I think its a good thing because there will be lesser circulating supply on bitcoin in the future, thus may affect the price.

This is a very interesting answer. Since bitcoin is not regulated like banks. Then we could say that the bitcoin within his wallet would no longer be part of the over all circulating supply. The total 21 million that is to be produced in bitcoin would not be adjusted. If I'm not mistaken there is at least 3-4 million that is considered at lost right now. Meaning this are within the people who forgot their password, lost hard drives and other reasons.

This idea also comes first in my mind after reading the question. I also think that the bitcoin will only be left out unless there is someone who the dead perso have given his/her account and access the bitcoin.

when a person dies while having bitcoins on his or her wallet, it is still there and nobody can have access to that.  It will still remain on the dead person's account and will not disappear unless some people have taken it. But it is can be prevented, whether your account has more or less money, one of your family member or one of your loved ones need to know the password of your account so they can access the dead person's money on its wallet. The money will be stucked there unless external interference takes place. The bitcoins that are remained in the account are considered now worthless if not used because it will not be part of circulatuon.

As a bitcoiner we must always think about our profit or money that is we invest in a project. All of those money will become useless if we died. So, our family must know our wealth as a bitcoiner. They must also know about our earnings, private key and wallet or account in bitcoin. No one can predict our life so, we must be ready at all times.

Yes when death will come nobody will know anytime it will come. if it happens then your bitcoins and altcoins will become no use it will not help to anyone. that's why we have to inform any of our closed once about our bitcoin activity and we have to inform them where we have stored all private keys and other information regarding our wallets.

It wont be loss even though that person died already, but if he keep the file or documents that has an access to all his account it cant still pass through generation or to a family member to continue what that person started to.

If the person died with btc it will be lost forever unless there is someone who took care that person or there is one who knows where is btc and the address or even the email address. I think there is still a chance to recover btc from nothing to something. It is regretful if the bitcoin will never be recovered or recommended to others. If fiat is still meaningful to use than btc if we talk about the death of a person. Fiat doesn't need more info but just you have it actual money. Lucky.

If you have a large amount invested than the only way for handing over the Bitcoins after your death would be through a will, by giving your private key in the will. Otherwise I cant think of any other way any one is even going to know that you had bitcoins. And even if they find it on your computer the wallet might be most likely locked with password which is almost impossible to break.

Well if there was no one who knows where your private keys and passwords are then I think they are gone forever and no one can get them but if you made provisions to have your private keys and passwords given to someone after you die then they can get it out.

Fortune magazine recently had an article about this. It's a good question. I keep access to my accounts an encrypted database. My wife doesn't have the password. But I think I'll make a copy of it that she can keep on her encrypted database.

http://fortune.com/2017/09/26/cryptocurrency-bitcoin-death/

This is something to ponder, we never know what's going to happen, so if you are investing in cryptocurrency, it's better than you made a will and instructions how to recover your coins in case something happens to you, cryptocurrency is now a portfolio just like a real estate.

Well if no one have access to the wallet e.g having the wallet key the bitcoin may be lost forever, because without the wallet key no body can access the blockchain wallet where the bitcoin is stored. That is why is advisable for another person should have your wallet key it may be your wife, kid or even a trusted friend.

Now investing and making money by investing in virtual currencies is very popular because this sector brings in a lot of profits and wealth quickly, I think there are a lot of people dying because of the copper. Virtual currency in general and Bitcoin in particular, in my country many investors have sold their assets to invest in Bitcoin and take risks, so they have sat.

The best thing to do is to make a written copy of your private keys. I, myself did this but instead of one, i have two copies of my private key. I entrusted one copy to my daughter for safekeeping if anything happens. The other one, i kept in my personal files to which she also has knowledge of. We'll never know what lies ahead that's why we should always be on guard.

I'm worried whether what will happen to all my money if I suddenly die tomorrow, I have a kid but she probably hates me and her mother isn't friendly bitch.    My option is my brother's kid from his first wife, we use to be buddies I might find a way to get him later to stay with me, he works at a fastfood restaurant the last year.

The persin died with bitcoin, well, it is depend on the situation if there's people who know about the password or about of her/him bitcoin before it died then the bitcoin are continue to move because the account is used by the other. If there's no one know about her/him bitcoin i think the bitcoin would only stack at their account.

In case a person dies with multiple BTCs in his account, then they would remain forever in the network. Unless his parents or friends know about the public address and private key, there will be no way to recover it. Same stands true for a living person, in case you lose your private keys, then there is no way in this world that you would be able to access your bitcoins. This can be seen as both boon and blessing. On the positive side, all your assets are very secure and you would never have to worry about them being hacked and stolen, but on the other hand in case you lose your private keys, then all your assets would disappear forever.

If a person with BTC and have a sudden death his/her BTC will still be in the network, unless he/she saves all information about his/her btc on notepad and can be easily access by his/her family. Like me all my online password are save on my pc.
When unexpected death happens to a btc account holder, yes all his bitcoin will still be in the network but no one will have access unless they know the correct log in details. To ensure that our wealth online will benefit our family and loved ones, it is good to keepsake our btc account information that will be available to our trusted family in case anything unwanted happens.

If a Bitcoin owner dies his all BTC's will be wasted until and unless someone else knows the key to his wallet. This is because Bitcoin's are stored in online wallets which are only accessed with the help of a private key which only the owner knows. If he will die no one else will be able to access the wallet and automatically his all earning will become a waste. If he don't want his money to be wasted he have to tell some other person who is close to him about the key to his wallet. He has no other choice. He can give the key to his closed one and can keep a regular check on his money so that the other person does not misuse his money. This is the only way his money can be brought into proper use even if the owner dies.

It is useless definitely. But if you share the information or passwords to the one you trusts very much it will continue to have value and significance. For example to your mother or to your wife. It is a great idea. Just choose a person that you trusts the most for you to secure also your holding when you are still living.

Well before sharing your private keys with your relatives and kin, make sure you explain first and make them aware of what it's for and how it works. That way they'll realize the importance of it and take extra care, simce that's probably the best way that you won't take your btcs to the grave with you

Then both, and the deceased person, and bitcoin will forever leave our world. True, they will not be together: the soul of the deceased will return to his afterlife, and bitcoin, into his virtual world. Until they find or find a secret key to it, bitcoin will be encrypted in the block-chain block-chain.
However, they say, quantum computers will be able to calculate secret keys fairly quickly. Then there will be a real opportunity to restore all the lost keys to the purses, well, along with this and get to our purses with you.

In the event of death, I supposed that anyone who loves the sustenance and continues evolving of the crypto should, from the onset, consider bringing in a next of kin as an option. What shall it profit one then to make so much BTC only to have them confined in a place where noone can access? For me I think this subject is very important to keep our BTC from diminishing and eventual extinction.

If a worker in bitcoin die maybe the bitcoin will be stuck forever on storage but of he already pass to another person for the next generation, the bitcoin are still existing to that person coz we all know that our life in earth is very short but we need to injest in other bank and invest for the benefits, someday we will earn the bitcoin for the future...

I think it is better to have a copy with all passwords to be on the safe side. It will be pity if a person dies and his family won't be able to use this money. If there is at least one person whom you trust, you can give the code or organize everything so that the person will get access only in case you die. This can be one of the points in the official testament.

the bitcoin will stuck on that wallet forever and ever, all people in this wolrd can't be withdraw the bticoin if they dont have the private key, and i think it will locked forever, unless the owner give the private key to you.

It will be a most unfortunate situation, however, if a person died the bitcoin will be lost because the person is no longer to claim or use it because he is already dead. Unless that same person has a family or even a relative that knows or even have a smidge of knowledge about the encryption password, wallets, and address of this dead person, then they may access these and they can either continue on what the person left or sell it and use the money on something else. Otherwise, it's pretty much gone forever.

you need to be prudent ... keep the keys and give them access to someone close to them.  but you will know that it will only be for your family and not for a multitude of heirs.

If the person dies by not inheriting the address of his close friend or family it will inevitably be lost forever. So we better prepare anything that will happen to us in the future. And give some access to our family.

What will happen??

No one will have the BTC address. Hence will them isolated?

In FIAT, people can handover money to someone.. So, i predict BTC will be disappeared gradually.

chances are that his assets and assets will not move at all if his arit becomes a treasure, if he does not give or inform his family like his son or his wife or his parents so when he dies his assets can be handled by the family , it should be so.

It is up to the individual to have an agenda or some kind of annotation with all the information of their accounts, emails, passwords authentications, and inform a person of confidence of his family.

I think no, it would not be the reason for bitcoin to be gone. Our local online wallet is an app and it can be linked in our facebook account, so in that case my closest family relatives can access through it and it may happen that they will use my earned bitcoin for good. They may continue to hold and invest it or to convert it into fiat and use it in practical living.

That's a great question. I've thought about this many times myself.
Considering the value of BTC, it is very important that people treat this the same way they do other high value assets - real estate, cash, gold etc. so you leave a way for the family to get access to these assets.

It is very unfortunate if someone dies and doesnt have a backup plan to give all his private key to their family or relatives. I think they can make a last will that will have his Private key included to be given to their family once they are dead.

Bitcoin will disappear because the person is no longer claiming or using it because he is dead, then they can access it and they can continue what the person left or sold and used the money for something else.

There is the best way to do this is to keep your private key safe and tell your lawyer to hand it over to your wife or family members that you want to be in charge of Bitcoin when you go.

it is certain that its bitcoin will die like the owner because no new owner can use the bitcoin he has, at least when you have assets make a small note to your family so they can open and use the assets you have.

It's bitcoin would be useless I believe that he should have even one close friend or close relatives who he can trust his wallet and his investment that in case of any emergencies his hard work would not be useless and for the hard time he could use his money or it's bitcoin without the aid of anyone's help.

Bitcoins are a virtual form of money protected by unbreakable cryptography. This attribute makes it a secure way to store wealth but also creates the risk that when Bitcoin owners die, their digital fortune will be out of reach forever. That’s a major problem for the relatives of tech-savvy individuals who have invested in a market currently worth about $70 billion.

Well, nice question. I personally think that their bitcoins will be put in vain. If no one has access to it except you, then no one can after you die since the system does not know if you are dead or not. The best way I can think to prevent is to have a trusted friend who also uses bitcoin, or any of your family members. Let them know about bitcoin and let them earn in their own way so that they do not have to open yours then if you died, all of your wealth will be transferred to your family.

Well, it can only be a waist if and only if the person in question fail to give out his or her password to his/her next of king or include his crypto currency wealth in his will before he answer the last call to his creator.
Well i think if a person died, there bitcoin will not disappear, there bitcoin willl always remain on there  wallet, and i think all the holders of bitcoin should trust one friend or family member and tell them there private key so when a person died there bitcoin will still safe.

Well its normal to tell your family on all your transactions and how to access it.So that if anything happened they can easily access it.Just make sure you shared it to a trusted one because even its your family they may use your money without your approval.Just secure everything for the future ahead.

If a person died with BTC that will be a very big double lost, that is why it is not good to keep too much secret from your family, at least your wife or one among your child should know about your BTC, as for me i share my account details with my wife and also my BTC.

Well maybe, if possible, one should make a backup information in your accounts or wallet and stored it in a safety deposit bank or something for safe keeping and address it to your family incase something happens. This way your hard earnings won't become useless, and your inheritor might even make a good roll in an investment in the future.

If a person dies that has accumulated bitcoins on his wallet I'm sure his relatives already know what his wallet password is. Even though I am even young I already know my cousin my wallet. So I'm not afraid that if I'm lost in the world it will still be able to use my accumulated money.

It will not disappear to the bitcoin wallet of the person. It will remain forever, that is one of the best feature of cryptocurrency. It is decentralized, no one owns it. As long as you have the private keys, you are the only one can access your wallet.

Yes I ever thinking like what you are. Now I get the solution :D . Why you not just make a secret code or something like that to preparing if you can't tell to anyone that you have a lot of bitcoin? I think you can tell it to your wife or your son about your secret. For an example my wife didn't know about bitcoin, but She knows that I have a bitcoin. So I tell her, if something bad happen to me, just keep my phone or my PC and learn how to exchange bitcoin to FIAT. Offcourse I protect it with a password which only me and my wife know it.

The purpose of a person investing is for the future, what is the use if he dies but the asset is not used by the nearest people in the future. I think people who invest bitcoin have prepared everything and will notify all the information to their families, because they are investing for the future of their family.

Right thing to do. now that it is mentioned that what will happen if a person with bitcoin dies, users here pf bitcoin should make a plan about it. In order for it to be put on waste, tell these things regarding bitcoin to a trusted person and if ever the user will be gone, there will be a person who can access it. in this way bitcoin would not be disappearing gradually.

Well you have to think of a way to store your private keys on a safe place or a deposit box and hide them somewhere. Access to these shall be specified specifically on your last will so that your heirs can benefit from your BTC.

Yes what if that happens? We'll in my side, my wife and daughter knows the details of my accounts/wallets. Just in case i left this two worlds (fiat world and cryptoworld) I'm living in, my investment will not go into waste.
Some of my colleagues tells me that my family will spendthrift my investment, but i know they won't. It's just a matter of discipline and trust. So in case, i know my investment is in good hands.

If a person who owns BTC dies suddenly, his coins will still be in the network I believe but no one can access that unless there is someone who knows anad can secure his passwords. Personally I have a copy of my passwords on a safe box with all the instructions and it is in a secured facility that will only be open if something unfortunate happens to me, so that I can ensure my family's future still. I hope most of us, Bitcoin owners will do that for their families.

I understand that life is unpredictable and you do not know what your family will be, but you need to think about the future, and if you have a certain number of bitcoins, then you can share the address with someone else (with your wife or parents). So in any situation there is a way out.
