Also entered into a deal with lightlord over 3 hours ago for 8.5btc, havent heard anything since. I split the transaction tho and only sent 2btc.

Will wait until tomorrow morning to give the benefit of the doubt until taking any further action.

He offered to use escrow with me which is what's strange. I then said I'd just split and send 2btc first as we both have good reputation/feedback.

Why not take the escrow option?

Based on his account and feedback I just preferred to split. It's unfortunate if his account has been hacked.

Looking at his btc address, only small amounts have been transferred out, and nothing too recent.

How does one protect themselves from something like this in the future? After all, the REAL lightlord has good reputation and even owns his own betting site? Why shouldn't I have trusted him?

Why would you trust anyone you haven't met? You have to understand that these people are scamming because they know they're hardly any consequence for it. Worst case scenario is they get a banned account and it's not long before they repeat the process of doing trusted trades and then getting someone to go first and scamming them.

Use escrow as MUCH as possible. I know John.K provides a service here and while it is tedious waiting for communication on both sides of the party, it is much better than losing your money. You can even make use of LocalBitcoins.com escrow service, just store the coins in your provided wallet, link someone to the ad and it's pretty much clockwork.

In all honesty, this was just a case of bad luck with him being possibly hacked but if you had used a form of Escrow you would have been fine.

Actually the accused never claimed he was hacked, it was assumed by someone else. Still, I never assume someone got genuinely hacked unless I was aware of a bug because it's so easy to make it look like your account was intruded upon.

I don't see how that affects his vulnerability? No one is 100% protected against intrusion and site status doesn't provide some kind of immunity.

I'm sure if this is a real intrusion, if and when he gets his account back he'll post a thread to clear things up.
