Title: cB or 1/100 BTC - Convenient Unit Right?
Post by: arthurdent6 on July 20, 2013, 03:11:33 AM
cBTC or 1/100th of a BTC would be a convenient unit given the BTC/USD/EUR exchange rates.  I mean instead of saying 0.0327 BTC I could say 3.27 cBTC or 'centibits'.

Just putting that out there.

Your suggestion is good,

Bit cents is so close to dollars and cents, that it doesn't take much to figure out.

Prob the next step down would be 1/100th smaller.

Cent of bitcent?

Well done

I prefer XBT etc that are more conventional, and I really do not see cB being convenient at all, given that Bitcoin is itself a Unit Coin

I can imagine the misunderstandings that could ensue:

Merch. "That'll be a hundred and fifty seven millibits and twenty four cents, please"

Cust. "o_O??"

Wouldn't work. Most Americans think the "centi-" prefix means 100x, as in "centi-millionaire".

"Cent" means 100, and it can go either way. Plus, seeing as American coins are called "cents" I think that we can understand.

This conversation has gone on many times on the forum, please use the search function instead of starting new topics.

I prefer to use mB (millibitcoin, or pronounced millibits) for small amounts. For even smaller amounts you can use microbitcoins, abreviated µB or uB. For example, one USD is currently valued at about 10.88 mB.

I prefer to stick with powers of 10 divisible by three, as is convention in SI units.

No we don't.
We use centimeter etc. all the bleeping time.

Where do these weird perceptions of Americans come from?

Bitcents could be cool, but really they're too big; after all they're worth more than a dollar already.

By the time people are using BTC a lot, it'll be worth over $1000. So I think we'll probably skip on to mills and mikes. A few years later, tens of satoshis.

The cyclopses (cyclopii?) in Krull traded an eye for the ability to see the future, but they were tricked.  They could only see their own death.

Metric system devotees traded the ability to divide lengths and measures by 3 for the ability to be annoying on the internet.  But they were tricked, we can multiply by 10 just as well as they can.

Im for millibit. Centibit sounds too close to cent and will cause people to think it should be worth a cent. Saying millibit sounds like a unit of disk storage to someone that doesn't know better.
