I am trying to mine coins from my university hostel with free electricity. Since i am new I am trying to understand how hash rate works? Is it according to the coin or hardware? For example, as the ETH DAG size increases, performance of cards with less graphics RAM decreases gradually, until they are no longer able to accommodate the DAG. There are more algorithms but you can google those and decide which coins on those you would like to mine. You can also look at sites that give known hash rates for different cards and use calculators to see how much you'll make.
If you're focused on short-term profits, how much you make in dollars or euros or whatever your currency is, would be more important. If you're hoping to take a bit more risk and win big, find a coin you think will be big and having more coins is more important than dollar value today. Find the mining algorithm associated with the coin in question, then do a search for "[algorithm] mining hardware comparison". You should find some lists where you can search for the performance of your GPU type, assuming yours isn't too old/obscure. Title: Re: Question: Is hash rate fixed according to the coin or the gpu? Post by: QuintLeo on December 16, 2017, 09:37:32 PM Hashrate is an interaction between the algorithm a coin uses, and the specific GPU model, and the settings a specific card can use while running that algorithm.
The suggested "mining hardware comparison" search is a good place to start. The COIN as such has nothing to do with the hashrate, it is the algorithm the coin USES that matters - all coins that use equihash (ZEC, ZTC, ZEN, and others) are going to have the SAME hashrate on a specific card, as an example. Ethhash (as used by ETH/ETC/others) is an anomoly among algorithms in that it DOES have issues that cause the hashrate to drop over time due to growth in the DAG file size - as far as I know NO OTHER ALGORITHM has that particular issue. |
