A "lesson learned" article about using MtGox securely written by someone who didn't. A must-read before placing any kind of money online and thinking it's safe.

Let me guess. The malware requires Microsoft Windows in order to steal the BTC and compromise the MTGox account etc., and it will not work on GNU/Linux. The lesson learned is to use GNU/linux and stay well away from Microsoft Windows for anything that involves money regardless of what form that money may take.

SO! In short:

Use Yubikey, or 2FA or any of the numerous systems I mistakenly thought were optional.

NEVER use any kind of online banking, Bitcoin or otherwise, if you notice suspicious or new processes running in the background(I saw Stronghold Online Backup running and thought nothing of it and paid the price)

Never put any money into Bitcoin you’re not afraid to lose. I always knew there was a slight chance that $500 could be gone at any moment which makes this loss slightly easier. Still fucked up and annoying, but I will survive to buy another BTC.

Thank you for reading and I hope this never happens to any one of you!

I should probably look into the two factor authentication...  However, it's also on my to-do list to follow the instructions for creating a secure paper wallet and putting that in a safety deposit box at my bank :)

Two factor auth is VITAL with any exchange. I highly recommend using a yubikey, it is worth the small investment! Spending $25 dollars to save let's say even $500 like in this case is cheap insurance you don't want to pass up.

I know a lot of people are holding off on it or delaying the process, don't wait until it's too late to do something. Even an authy setup like coinbase or google authenticator option is good if you dont want to buy a yubikey.

Linux is something I look into more and more especially after this happened to me. Just getting ready to make the switch soon.

Paper wallets are an idea I just got turned on to. There's a kickstarter for a paper wallet generator called the Piper which you guys should check out. Do you think that something people would be interested in buying off the internet? I kinda wanna get my hands on a few.
