Title: Weekend Project: USB Block Eruptor Coffee Warmer
Post by: JinTu on July 24, 2013, 07:33:16 AM
We recently had a surplus of hard drive heat sinks at work from old drives that were being sent out for destruction/recycling and I snagged a few of them on the way out the door. This weekend I wanted to have some fun and decided to turn one of them into a coffee warmer with some spare parts and two spare Block Eruptors I had laying around.

The original unmodified heat sink

I drilled a hole between the two USB connectors and expanded the original outer holes to give sufficient clearance for the zip ties

Added standoffs to each of the corners

Prepping for final assembly

The two Block Eruptors attached to the heat sink with thermal tape

Added zip ties for strain relief

Hashing away

Results:
The heatsink works a little too well and only gets uncomfortably warm on the top of the heatsink, but there is plenty of room to add another one later.

I have a number of these exact heat sinks on old disks up in the loft if anyone's interested .  I can't remember precisely how many, maybe 6 or 8.

I was considering cannibalizing one as a heatsink for a K1.

I'm in the UK and would happily swap for any parts / components that would help me DIY build a K1 nano or a fraction of a BTC to cover postage.

From the same server(s) I also have a bunch of 90mm cooling fans (12v 0.31A) if anyone can use them (I think I have about 30 of these!)

Regards

The K1 heat sink eh... with the latest revision you will have to cut that down a bit. Hehehe.

I posted a bad drawing for the heat sink in BKKCoins thread for the K1.

32 mm by 25 mm or something. You could get a few out that coffee warmer.

About 12 per heat sink with those dimensions.

I would buy 100 cheap erupters in december and convert it to cheap noiseless home heater.

Rasberry pi, wifi dongle, custom made hub array...

Code name heathasher, no fire hazard, no noise, looking insanelly good, standalone, hashing 30GH/sec

Great decoration for modern place.
Pub version could have coin slot and qr printer :)

Who is interested in that idea ?

Freicoin. Blockerupter. Difficulty still low there and a space heater. Nice.

I have a spare Akasa SSD enclosure/heatsink kicking around. Think I have a weekend project.
I need to find a suitable thermal tape I can buy, other than that I'm ready to go.

I'm more likely going to use epoxy or a glue gun to attach the USB cables to the underside.

Well done!

BFL promissed a product like that, however it was redesigned.

Your idea shows how easy is to produce an efficient way to not waste energy, in this case heat.

I accept your challenge. Just going to wait till the price drops below 0.1 per erupter.
