With bitcoin low, some alts are dancing like crazy when you compare them vs btc and not vs usd. So my question is .... is it really that smart to buy alts with bitcoin now, if or not if when bitcoin starts to move upwards again wont alts go down like crazy ?? Or is it worth taking a chance on something and hope for the best? PS! I'm trying to accumulate BTC not dollars  :P

it depends which alts you buy..
if you accumulate dollars and not bitcoin you will earn anyway by investing in alt coins and waiting because gains from bitcoin will always keep flowing to the alt coins.
you also can hold BTC and buy alts later after BTC bull run

Just carry out your research before buying though. Study who's behind the altcoin, the team, the concept & goals for the future.

Once you're confident with the above and you know it's most likely to succeed (whether it's short or long term) then you can go ahead and buy the altcoin.

One should hedge his / her position by keeping a portion of the investments in BTC & invest some of that in ALTs since the headroom for growth is considerable large in ALTs as compared to established currency like BTC.

yeah yeah I get all that and I got few coins in my sights :) :) I'm just wondering if it's stupid to buy now considering btc is so low.... if that sucker start to move I guess a lots for money will be drained out of alts and into btc by trend catchers :P so perhaps better to wait for alt coins to start crashing before buying in :)

Well, it depends really on how you look at it. BTC is still the most used alt pair, and with Bitcoin you therefore can access a lot of alts on exchanges. If you want to use Tether (USDT) then you still have to buy it with BTC or with fiat deposits, either way you lose some on fees so you make an auto loss there.

Back in September I bought some alts that I thought had reached floors. Bitcoin went up and up though, so those floors fell even deeper. However, with Bitcoin now in bearish markets, some of those alts have recovered - now I am in profit (BTC) for those alts. Not all recovered, I am still in overall BTC loss, but that's the way it goes.

Splitting your holdings would be good too. Bitcoin may be low but it's value is still way beyond any Altcoin and if you choose an altcoin carefully, you might get great gains.

Every decision is stupid to some extent, you can't predict the future, make a decision and don't look back anymore. It is hard to trade btc/alts pairs.

There aren't much ways to buy alts honestly i have seen people like you they first sell btc for usd and then buy alts with that same usd and say they didn't buy it with btc :P. Technically it doesn't make much of a difference unless you actually try to increase your btc if you are simply here to increase you value in terms of usd then crypto is a perfect investment you literally have to buy and forget.

Since you want to increase the amount of bitcoin you hold you have no other option but to buy alts and hold them for some time, your timing is not perfect, it would have been better if you bought when bitcoin was at its peak but very few could have guessed that was the top, so as long as you invest in some good alts and not in some icos that no one knows if they are going to succeed or not investing in alts right now is an adequate choice.

Buy with bitcoin when the price of altcoin gets plunged and that's only the best time for sure. basically, that depends on the timing. if OP tries to spent bitcoin to altcoin when bitcoin is much stronger than altcoin and then he or she will get a lot of altcoin. There is no relationship with USD terms.

If you are closely watching the movements of btc and altcoins then you'll know its good to buy them now.  Coins that was supposed to be dead because of bitcoin are recovering and some altcoins are shooting up to the sky everywhere.

Maybe because it depends on the altcoin that you are gonna buy, many altcoins do not have potential( no supporters) but there are many also that can give you big profit if it will pump high.  Some altcoins are not affected when bitcoin increase but mostly affected.

Don't buy altcoins now. All of them are pumped and will come down once bitcoin makes its next run.

ETFs, Futures and upgrades are in store for BTC in 2018.. so far that's what we know of. BTC will pump guaranteed and altcoiners will dump to take profits and get into BTC for the rise.

It's certainly risky based on what you said and if bitcoin starts making some movement I would be quick to close any positions you have. I've seen it already when bitcoin went up 10% or so the other day, many alts crashed by about 20% in that time as people rush to get money in to bitcoin. It sounds like you understand how the markets move so you should be okay.

Not the perfect time to buy alts for a long time except the top of the list (e.g ETH, XRP) but in fact the best time to trade on daily basis.
Alts always involves a big risk because bitcoin volatility is too much high now as compared to the past, when the price is going to rise high no one knows, so better to be on the safe side and choose the top ranked coin with good reputation and don't depend on other coins.

The issue with the market now is that it is difficult to predict the top of the market, I was saying BTC is going to stopped at 10K during its rally but went as far as 20K, I think Altcoins is likely going to push crypto market cap to $1 trillion before the correction will begin

This is not the buy and hold. Now we can actually able to make the profit with the altcoins in trading side. If you money invest in trading and make the short term earning now. We see many people investing on the altcoins such as ripple, waves, IOTA and etc but all these coins are not reliable coins in the market to be stable for long time.
Like every time bitcoin and ethereum only will grows more than anything in the market for sure so investing on the altcoins will be very risky move for the long term holders.

I think it's smart to have some of both. I wouldn't ever get rid of all my bitcoin for alts, but doing some trades with altcoins can definitely be a nice way to maximize your porfolio returns. I often will trade some bitcoin out for an altcoin, and wait until it hits a good price and transfer back to bitcoin.

I think it is not wise that buying other altcoins with bitcoin now, because, in my opinion it is a good time to investing in bitcoin. The price of it is giving a good buying opportunity for now.

Today is the best time to buy, tomorrow it will still be more expensive, and you will regret not having bought it yesterday.

You know buddy bitcoin goes up and alts will follow. because bitcoin is the core of cryptocurrency and if it goes sideways then we must see a pump season for altcoins, what if btc reverse downwards? then bitcoin will go down followed by alts. so learn from it.

It's definitely a risk, especially given as you said you are hoping to grow bitcoin instead of usd. I think right now the whole market is down and so alts will also increase alongside bitcoin, in fact I think there will initially be a larger increase in alts. I do feel though that after an initial increase bitcoin will have a run and that's what you don't want to miss. The run towards and beyond a new ATH.

Again the situation is repeated a week ago, when the whole crypto currency is in the red zone, a market capitalization falls, no one can give a clear answer what to do. My opinion is that to buy now is impractical.

the market is falling down because the fear feeling. It does not mean the altcoins is not good. You should research and you will know there are many cheap coins which are released from successful projects with potential services. They are TIO, CTR, H2O and PKT

You should buy cryptos such as BTC, LTC, ETH, USDT and hold until the cryptos market rate increases again to spend in altcoins rather than invest altcoins at present, the risk will be very high.

It is ironic, because since January the 4th (when this guy posted this) i made more than x3 of my entire portfolio until the last four days when everything go down by more than 30%..

It depends on what altcoins you would like to buy because when Bitcoin price recover some altcoins will follow. While other altcoins will not recover with Bitcoin. It is therefore very difficult to predict which one you should buy when the Bitcoin price is low.

I don't think it stupid to buy Alts now with Bitcoin as long you know the Alts you are buying. You have to study the project and the background of the company. If you knew its legit and the project has huge supporters and it is valuable, then go ahead.

Probably it is as many altcoins had pump in the december and are close to their all time highes compared to bitcoin,we saw what happen when bitcoin went on a bull run and we would be off much better if we held our bitcoin then investing in altcoins.I would much rather have and trade only those altcoins that i can sell directly to $ like neo and etc

I think it is, since Bitcoin's market value at this moment is falling and we all know that its market price will eventually. It is more advisable to invest with the use of fiat since Bitcoin is a better investment than Altcoin, but this is only based on my perceptions as an investor. But if you are sure that it is reslly a profitable investment, you are free to do so since that is your money in the first place.

It depends on the altcoins you want to buy. If you choose some solid project, I think you can make more than if you are just holding bitcoin. But make sure to spread your investment. I think ETH, Waves, NEO are some really safe bets, ELIX and PRL are also some nice opportunities imo.
But make sure to research your projects and only invest in those that you see useful long term.

Due to recent market dips you can get lesser known, lower cap coins with potential for 50-70% off their ATH prices so those (especially the ones that had the bad luck to be released in the market after January with all that was going on) are prime candidates to pick up and have better returns in comparison to the heavy hitter coins when the market cap is bullish but in a reserved way.

Everything is purely on one's own decision. At present the market is unpredictable to cent percent and so never go on anyone's decision. If you prefer altcoins would profit good, then move towards it and if not stay on bitcoin. The end result can be found only when the market becomes stable moving towards growth.

Its more like smart person if you buy altcoin when the market bear like this. But dont forget to average. Dont do all in..at this situation we need a good strategies for daily trade. Because we are in the bear market. I hope im wrong and if i am wrong bitcoin could goes to $100k the end of this year.

I just think very much in pity, if Bitcoin is already held for a long time and now the price is being crashed so people are choosing to exchange their Bitcoin into Altcoin because it sees a significant price difference. Yeah .. everyone has hope with what they have in order to get better results, but if the opportunity is actually making us lose, then is not it better to ignore it.
For example if you have 10 Btc and you will swap some into Alts (eg 4Btc to Alts), then you still have 6 Btc and 4 Alts by comparison Btc : Alts = 10 : 1.
Well .. If price Btc and Alts down simultaneously (down 10%) then it is better to have Bitcoin than Altcoins.

I don't think is a stupidity because altcoins can give us good profits in short term so it is a right thing to do now in my opinion.But not the altcoin which is rising now won't last too longer so it is very important thing to find out which coin is gonna make that quick bump, probably no one knows so its just like gambling the person who is lucky enough will get the right coin.

For me buying alts is also taking chances and risks. You must be very good in studying the quality, background of that alts could have  a big potential in the market because some ready do have good potentials and if you are lucky enough it could give a good return. Why not? It is your bitcoin you alone can decide on what to do with it.

This is a tricky one. I would say buying alts is a better investment because both are going to rise and if you pick the correct alt then it will rise faster than bitcoin. The trend of alts falling when bitcoin rises is under normal conditions, but now the market is in freefall so in this situation both bitcoin and alts will rise at the same time as more cash gets pumped into the cryptosphere. Bitcoin however, is never a bad investment at any time ;)

I think that now is a good time to buy alt coins. But it would be better if you bought them for fiat , not for bitcoin. I also do not have a fiat and I already bought the altcoin for ETH  :-\

Good analysis, actually i was thinking of this as well. It's pretty hard to look for exchange that you can easily buy coins coming from a fiat, others says that in order to do so better look for a p2p transaction rather than converting fiat into bitcoin and then to alts, it actually make sense since ratio between bitcoin and alts are quite high these days and for me i rather buy alts directly coming from fiat than bitcoin because we know that bitcoin will always stays at the top and this dumps will surely covered by some huge pump later on.

I usually buy alts thru bitcoin to exchange,  since I'd been used on doin it since before, buying alts in ico can be the best option for potential coins, having p2p transactions is quite risky, though if you're to deal with legit and trusted people then that's a good catch.

with doing some research on the coins, I think he could find the profitable for short term and long term and he could make a profit. but don't even try to buy the coins that are already going to the moon because you can risk your money to get trapped at the high price. make sure that when you buy the coins, the price is at a lower price so you don't have to wait too long.

I think its not. Altcoins were also crashed in last couple of days or a week. Bitcoin is hard to recover in current situation but many alts have their roadmap to catch so good news will still pump their prices.

If you are truly invested in doing a long term HODL, then no. This is actually the best time. If you are trying to day trade, yes, don't be crazy.

I would suggest trying something small that has a potential to woon, but doesn't require a lot of capital if you want to speculate. My favorite right now is COLX. Otherwise, be safe my friend. Lots of money to be lost if you aren't careful.

It depends on how you acquire the bitcoin. Because if you buy bitcoin now with your money it’s a good choice. You will get double amount compared to a month ago. This is a great time to buy bitcoin and turn it into alt coins if you don’t have patience to wait for bitcoin’s recovery.

It might be a really smart move actually to buy some altcoins now. Look at stratis for example, that is a very bullish setup despite the dip.

Previously, I was always waiting when bitcoin stabilized and only after that I bought alts. But now I try to buy interesting coins for each drawdown. Almost always I'm in plus. Just need to accumulate experience (especially unsuccessful) and then start to feel when it's time.

I think that is always the general idea, but I think people are looking always to buy alts during Bitcoin dips - yes Bitcoin falls, but alts fall harder. So when Bitcoin rises back, alts do seem in general to also rise, and usually along with a Bitcoin gain, in addition to fiat. USDT is supposed to be stable by nature, but even with its supposed US dollar peg, it has fallen in value, so you only invest in Tether if you want to buy back Bitcoin at the dips, without putting in extra fiat. Good strategy, but I hardly sell Bitcoin and I definitely do not trust Tether!

There is not a definitive answer we can give, day trading is the most difficult form of trading, while many aspire to be one someday the truth is that is not easy, however the profits are very good if you have the talent but you need years of experience to make consistent profits, making longer trades is easier and depending on your time frame it is very similar to holding but the profits are not as good.

I think it is not stupid to buy altcoins using your bitcoin. Because if you really think that the coin you will gonna invest with is going to be more profitable, so why not. It will still depends upon to the behaviour of your altcoin .
If the value of that altcoin increase so its good choice to buy but if not then it is bad.
So always be wise and be patient if you want to earn more profit.

Altcoin trading always be risky but you can make good profit other side could be big lose !
so if you jump into Altcoin then be prepared to face bot situation !

i would wait until bitcoin rallies, its only a matter of time you just need to have some patience. Those you have patience make the biggest gains.

Not stupid at all if you buy alt coin now. Bitcoin looked like heading to $8k and altcoin probably will win againts bitcoin untull q1 2018 end. This time is the right time to buy altcoin. Especially good altcoin with legit developer like crypterium and aurora token or maybe you need to consider buying rail block which will rebrand to nano.

Many of them have lost a lot of value and i think they will recover soon :)

No, it is not a stupid idea to buy altcoins when bitcoin is down. It is a great time to buy altcoin when BTC is down. Just make sure buy good altcoins. When BTC is down I purchase altcoins which are down against btc, not int USD and are in top 100. And this strategy really works for me  ;D

It doesn'tmake sense for me to be throwing BTC at Altcoins now, I believe the time to do so was around December when most fo these coins suffer huge loss against BTC, patient is the key in this space. I believe BTC will touch $50k this year

Bitcoin price is approaching $ 50,000 is not possible, current bitcoin prices are dropping, many people gave up bitcoin and switch to invest in other altcoin. I think in the future, bitcoin will be reduced, there are a lot of altcoin was born. Competition between the huge altcoin. The altcoin will occupy the bitcoin market. I think now we should invest in other altcoins such as ethereum, ethereum prices are rising.

I would keep at least 50% in alts.

You just need to do research, many alts will give you way higher profit comparing to btc.

Everyone has their own outlooks on whats best to do though.

From my experience, Id say play with alts, maybe get some help to introduce you to it?

for me it is better to hodl bitcoin for now and wait for the value to go up, rather investing in alts and gain no profit after bitcoin come back to 17k higher.

I would also suggest hodling BTC for now. BTC will make a huge move. The problem is no one knows when :)

because the marketcap on altcoin is not big as bitcoin, so it is quite possible that an altcoin market is manipulated by a whale, or a small marketcap that makes altcoin market becomes more fluctuating than bitcoin, so that's why switching to investing in altcoin is stupid things and very risky, but I think it's not a stupid thing if you use with the right calculations. eg not leaving bitcoin as the main investment, using altcoin only for alternative investment or trading only, not replacing bitcoin as a major investment

You are not wrong, it is all a speculation, you can make your own speculation. Altcoin can also benefit you, but you have to learn about the altcoin you want to buy, so that later you can benefit from altcoin.

I personally think that it is a great time to accumulate more btc, I do know many people that are buying btc in bulk silently, a vast majority of crypto community still believes in btc strongly.

Just imagine, if we were able to tell when the bitcoin was going to soar and when it is destined to face a failure, everyone would have been so rich. But I like bitcoin now due to its unpredictable nature. It will give you a surprise when least expected. That is cool. Showing a bit of patience should be okay with all the investors because sooner or later, they are going to make big profit.
