Title: [ANN] Origin Protocol: The Sharing Economy Without Intermediaries
Post by: andrewhyde on January 09, 2018, 12:28:00 AM
Hello from Origin Protocol! Our entire team is gathered in our office in San Francisco and we thought it would be a good time to introduce ourselves to the Bitcointalk community.

We are building a sharing economy without intermediaries. A 0% commission booking engine that enables you to power your business or build a marketplace of your own.

From our website:

Quote
“Origin is a protocol for creating sharing economy marketplaces using the Ethereum blockchain and IPFS. We empower developers and businesses to easily build decentralized marketplaces on the blockchain. The Origin Protocol makes it easy to create and manage listings for the fractional usage of assets and services. Buyers and sellers can discover each other, browse listings, make bookings, leave ratings and reviews, and much more.”

Our goal is to disrupt the billion dollar sharing economy, where the likes of AirBnb, Uber and GetAround are the 800 lb. gorillas. We want to reduce transaction fees (usually 20-30%), reduce censorship and regulation, and reward early platform users. Our platform is built on top of Ethereum and IPFS.

We are super excited about what we are doing and we hope you are too. The founders and first employees are serial entrepreneurs that have built and sold successful companies. Matt was very early at YouTube and has been part of three startup acquisitions. Josh built 3 venture-backed startups and sold Torbit to Walmart Labs. On the funding front we are backed by Pantera Capital. You can read some early press about us on Coindesk (https://www.coindesk.com/pantera-invests-3-million-sharing-economy-token-origin/).

Outside of fractional marketplaces, what about more traditional marketplaces like eBay, Craigslist, Yelp where it is a single transaction? Can Origin help with that?

We are building a protocol and time will tell what that is used for. I think it is best for sharing economy type marketplaces. We are taking a 0% commission fee so we see a ton of potential for any industry where you see a high commission (we are seeing 12-40% as commonplace). We hope a lot of different communities build their own marketplaces on Origin Protocol.

Hey guy, I'm one of the founders. Happy to answer any questions you might have.

Yes, we support those types of marketplaces as well!

In fact, all 5 full-time employees on the team have built companies before & have been a part of 6 acquisitions to companies like Google and Walmart.

I see your team has a lot of entrepreneurial experience, and it's important to the project.

I see your team has a lot of entrepreneurial experience, and it's important to the project.

Matt and Josh (the two founders) are super talented guys and entrepreneurs. They've been founders or key employees at companies that have been acquired by giants like Google and Walmart Labs. Origin definitely has the pedigree/team box checked.

I also know that this is kind of a passion project for them. Matt built a real time analytics tool for comparing ride sharing prices. With his app you could see if Uber, Lyft, Sidecar, or a Taxi was cheaper in real time from A to B. Uber shut him down with a cease and desist. Josh was a big Airbnb host as well and experienced tons of issues with over-regulation, large fees, and a centralized body making arbitrary rules.

I know Josh has told me the story about getting in an Uber with the 30th Uber driver ever. It's unfair that that driver was integral to building the Uber network and contributing to its massive financial success but was not rewarded for doing so and is making less money than when he started.

It'd be really fitting for them to bring sharing economy and p2p marketplaces back to the people. These guys are really in it for the long term.

As an Airbnb host myself and someone who is a heavy participant in the sharing economy, I am really excited about what Origin is developing!

Hi all,

Long time lurker here. Been following BTC since ~2012. I'm helping Origin w/ some engineering & devops, so I figured it was time to make an account. Happy to answer any questions, but I also wanted to contribute by sharing a little anecdote about my personal mental journey with Origin.

When Origin was first described to me several months ago, I thought to myself "why do I need a blockchain to buy a bike off Craigslist or rent out my apartment on VRBO?" What made it click it for me was when I finally realized what happens when Origin becomes the underlying database for sharing applications. They are taking what has become the moat of most semi-monopolies (their data) and turning that on it's head. Imagine how much more innovative & competitive AirBnB or MLS or Craigslist would need to be if anyone could come along and build better applications on top of "their" dataset. That's what Origin is doing. It can seem a little pie-in-the-sky right now, and there's a long way to go, but hey iPhones barely existed 10 years ago, right? :-) I really love the vision behind this idea. Since finally wrapping my brain around Ethereum ~1 year ago, this is one of first applications I've come across that is not only well-suited for a blockchain, but wouldn't be able to exist without it.

Anyway, that's my spiel. Thanks for reading!

I'm thinking of the uber app. Take advantage of your spare time. The origin protocol will revolutionize the use of resources in business. The symbiotic economy, all the participants benefit from what the origin protocol was created. That was amazing.

I really support the project.
There is a need to reduce the impact of sharing economies platforms; every platform is monopolizing its field of interest whereas it is avoiding any regulamentation, damaging both consumers and workers.

I found a project that was listed on coinmarketcap.com as the Odyssey (OCN). The content of the Odyssey (OCN) is "THE FUTURE OF DECENTRALIZED SHARING ECONOMY
THE FOUNDATION OF GLOBAL PEER TO PEER ECOSYSTEM. "I would like to know if the Origin Protocol (The Sharing Economy Without Intermediaries) overlaps the idea and is a competitor to the OCN.

Interesting coin. And also a very interesting idea and a team. Confusing is that the site does not work, and that the project has a connection with the project "TRON" - (TRX).  :-\

I'm not a pro on token economics, but its certainly possible that a project building on Origin could be a "bigger" success than Origin. I.e. gmail is bigger than SMTP, some ecomerce sites built on Wordpress are "more successful" than wordpress. But that's all speculation...who knows what amazing projects could be built on Origin? I'd love it if the next amazon/trillion-dolllar-company was built on us

But does it really matter? If Origin will create something usefull and its token will be used by many people around  the world we all will benefit from this.

I found Origin protocol very interesting idea and will study project more. Team looks solid.

Since there is element of fomo behind this project and seeing that isn't hard to guess that many people will not be able to invest in spite of their best tries in pre-sale. Anyways there will be countless chances to catch good entry points in case someone misses to be part of crowdfunding rounds. But most of the people should be able to enter in these rounds.

This pre-sale is gonna be a nightmare to enter. Just like all hyped ICO's. You might have to set your GAS to like 3 million on your MEW wallet for a higher chance to get in.  :-\

Pre-sale is actually coming but we need to wait first the updates, because without the updates we cannot move forward to the next procedure that we need to take. With the VC investments case, basically the dev is on process

Pantera Capital is the announced investors and surely there will be others as well. What I understood from the disclaimer of pre-Sale, it mentions that this is subject to US regulations and securities commissions and that's all. If still anyone wants to contribute will be treated under this clause. You can change country from the list if you are from from somewhere else. By the way the list of projects being built on this protocol is amazing.

I don't get why they are undecided on hard date for starting raising funds though development and preparation is important but it should have been done by now.

Hi!

We just listed on our site and assigned rating "A3" to your ICO Origin Protocol (Origin).

"A3" – High public scores and ratings, but not as good as A1 or A2. Generally low risks. Such ICOs should be definitely paid closest attention to.

Additional information is available on our site https://icoinspect.com/ico/origin-origin (https://icoinspect.com/ico/origin-origin)

Best regards,

Hi, everybody. I'm interested in the following question - does Origin Protocol have a working product? I do not understand what are the advantages of using the Origin Protocol. I see there's a lot of hype surrounding the project. But I don't understand why. Who the can to answer me these questions? I apologize for the trouble and thank you!

I see the potential in the Origin project, because in my opinion if the platform is developed by an experienced team, the project should be successful, and as I see this team is really high-level, who already have successfully completed startups.

EDCON Recap from Origin Protocol
The Origin team recently returned from Toronto and the Community Ethereum Development Conference (EDCON). The theme of the conference was “Never Forget Why You Started” and it was a refreshing callback to the motivation for why Ethereum was created. So often, conferences can be solely about making deals or marketing. We had high expectations for for EDCON, and they were surpassed in almost every way. We are more excited than ever to be apart of the Ethereum developer community and Dapp ecosystem. There were many fun moments as well and the Origin team had a blast.

It is going to be remarkable project of the year in my opinion.

And one more question-the team plans to participate in Consensus?

I like the idea of the project and believe it has a good chance to succeed because of the strong team that leads it. With over 30 projects already lining up to use Origin Protocol, the tokens is expected to have strong usage once those dApps are launched.

The timeline of releasing the tokens has not been publicly announced, and it could be a while before tokens are distributed and tradable. This makes the project not suitable for a quick turnaround.

We are very excited to announce (https://medium.com/originprotocol/former-head-of-dropbox-nyc-engineering-joins-origin-e8b4f38d1303) that Cuong Do is joining the Origin team. Cuong was the head of Dropbox Engineering in NYC and was part of the founding engineering team of YouTube. He also spent time early on at Inktomi and PayPal.

Cuong is truly a startup legend and has deep expertise in distributed systems and scaling. He had a large responsibility in keeping YouTube's site alive during the early days when it scaled at an incredible pace. In addition to that, he was most recently an engineering manager at Cockroach Labs, an open source distributed database company.

We are thrilled to have him onboard and he joins his former colleague and legend, Yu Pan, who was a founder of PayPal and YouTube's first hire. Origin is incredibly lucky to have such an all star team of engineering talent!

Welcoming Micah Alcorn — The Road from Oklahoma to Blockchain
https://medium.com/originprotocol/welcoming-micah-alcorn-the-road-from-oklahoma-to-blockchain-7e36713446df

How did a commercial real estate broker in Norman, Oklahoma become an integral part of a cutting-edge blockchain team? In short, it’s about passion, skill, and community. Today we are happy to announce that Micah Alcorn is the newest member of Origin Protocol.

As an open source project, Origin Protocol has always taken a unique approach of hiring from within our community. Instead of the traditional approach of candidates submitted a resume, taking a coding test, and then an hour of answering questions in a conference room, we get to interact on real issues in real time. Origin being an open source software project means people “apply” to work on Origin by joining our Discord, checking out or Github, and working on open issues and submitting pull requests. This allows for a diverse group of people all over the world (many of whom may not have the typical software engineering resume) to start working with Origin. This diversity of viewpoints and contribution is incredibly important to us and we are engineering our protocols and platform to be open and permission-less just like our engineering community is.

Micah was one of our very first open source contributors, making his first pull request in January, fixing a particularly nasty CSS issue. From there his contributions just got better and more technical. Soon he moved on to web animations, React, and Javascript. He also learned new libraries with astonishing speed, including Flask, PyBabel Localization, and Web3.

We on the engineering team we were asking, “Who is this Micah guy that is contributing such great code, and such a joy to work with?”

The story begins years ago with Micah looking to improve his real estate firm’s marketing efforts. He built a small website. He amazed his customers with a Google-Earth fly-in. He inadvertently learned Javascript as he added customizations. He started attending a Ruby on Rails Meetup. And before you knew it, he was doing more coding than real estate!

An entrepreneur at heart, it wasn’t long before he teamed up with a cofounder and built WellAttended, a box-office management platform for independent theaters and arts organizations. This led him in 2014 to attend Boulder Startup Week where he met Andrew Hyde. Since then, Micah has attended Startup Week every year.

So when Andrew joined Origin Protocol in December, Micah took notice and began to follow our progress on Github. Soon he was making his first pull requests, and the journey began.

Micah has become an indispensable part of the Origin team and we are happy to make this official. Those of you who have attended our weekly open engineering calls will recognize Micah as the guy who keeps us all in order and has his finger on the pulse of our many repos, pull requests, and issues. He’s also an integral part of the product team, working out UI/UX issues with our cofounder Matt Liu and our designer Aure Gimon.

If you are also passionate about what we are building at Origin and want to work alongside amazing coworkers like Micah Alcorn, Andrew Hyde, Coleman Maher, Jon Hearty, Josh Fraser, Stan James, and Yu Pan, please reach out. We’re look forward to your first pull request!

They need to finalize the next steps to make sure of involvement of individuals as they also do great marketing in their regional areas. I have been waiting for this for months.

It is understandable why they went for accredited investors restriction in changed scenario which pushed the small investors away. Let these big investors provide the funds for project and our chances to buy at best prices may appear once it hits exchanges. When token is available in free markets it is independent from influence inn long run. I have eyes on the development anyways.

Is that really what they do? I think for the low hardcap they use to limit it with strategic and or with private presale they already have a good amount of funds. If we take on the project it is really highly potential and now after the chains its time for the protocols to get into the market. Only those who are capable of bringing a good work will soon left in the market. They have established an influence to its community and good support i don't able to participate in crowdsale maybe i will just wait it on exchange.

Personally I'm not a fan of this model, as well as the minimum contribution amount being 1,000 USD, so 2+ ETH. Compared to other ICO's where it is usually 0.5-1 ETH, or a minimum or 200-300 USD. It's a shame they have taken this approach of pushing away the smaller investors, like myself, who would otherwise participate in the token sale. Projects find price stability a lot sooner when the token distrubtion is wider and more refined, instead this will likely be a another project dominated by whales, such as ICO's that sell 90% at pre-sale and only allow a minority of smaller investors to play "gas wars" over the reamining supply.

That said, I like the project and believe it has real potential, but given we are in a bear market I won't be investing once it reaches exchanges, given the current token metrics. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this project for the future though. Best of luck to everyone who gets into this one! No doubt it'll sell out fast.

Our minimum was $1k and max was $25k. Over 50% gone within 2 hours. Still a bit of allocation there but closing out very soon. Nice to be able to have a bit of a cap for people (not 1ETH) and time to fund (not a 5 min sellout gas war).

Not only that paper bro, we must be accredited investors or investment funds according to all SEC rules to have an opportunity to invest. Strange decision for ICO but i think they know what they doing.

It is a pity, i wanted to participate, but who knows, maybe there will be another public sale round if they not collect their hard cap, the status bar on icodrops shows 80% and the token sale runs from 18 June...

PayPal, YouTube, Google, Dropbox, and now Origin — Welcome Franck Chastagnol

When building technology startups, one of the best predictors for long-term success is the strength of the core team. Even as product development and market conditions can change unexpectedly over time, a highly-functioning, mission-driven team can adapt, ship product, and pivot its way to eventual success.
Today I’m ecstatic to announce that another world-class engineer, Franck Chastagnol, has joined Origin Protocol. Franck started programming at the age of 8 with an Amstrad CPC 664. He and I have known each other since he was the engineering lead on my very first successful product launch at YouTube. Together we built Claim Your Content, YouTube’s earliest content detection, licensing, and monetization product. This was an integral launch when YouTube was still a young 35-person startup figuring out how to effectively partner with companies like Universal Music Group and the BBC. Our work was pivotal in establishing a sustainable business model when it wasn’t yet obvious that YouTube would be a profitable business that could work effectively with content partners all across the world.

Sharing economy is the trend. If you look into the statistics, the sharing economy is growing fast and is expected to grow from about $14 billion in 2014 to $335 billion by the year 2025. Origin Protocol looks like a great project, glad i found it. I'll be watching closely to see all the developments. Another project on my radar fpr sharing economy is Uchain, feel free to check out some nice overview on it:

Thanks and best wishes to the team!

A sharing economy marketplace on blockchain is what origin aims to offer which is built on an open, distributed, and shared data layer to increase transparency which I think is a pretty great concept and would be able to attract many investors and a large userbase. The team behind it is reputable and well-experienced .If i had to invest in it then I definitely would have.

This is very good update with demo release but my question is about the status of the project. I have lost temporarily interest when I saw it wasn't for everyone to invest. Is the funding round is already over ? If yes, when listing on exchanges to provide small investors chance to get involve after buying from there easily.

Origin Protocol London Meetup: Protocols of Blockchain, Fireside Chat

Origin is building a platform that enables the creation of many decentralized marketplaces, allowing buyers and sellers to connect and transact directly on the blockchain. The company is building a set of protocols, developer libraries, and a decentralized application using the Ethereum blockchain and IPFS, with an initial focus on disrupting sharing economy marketplaces. Origin's mission is to reduce or remove transaction fees, promote open and transparent commerce, redistribute value more fairly to buyers and sellers, and empower the 2 billion currently unbanked individuals around the world to participate in digital marketplaces. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/origin-protocol-london-meetup-protocols-of-blockchain-fireside-chat-tickets-49176836241

Origin Protocol Expands to Greater China
https://medium.com/originprotocol/origin-protocol-expands-to-greater-china-f6d5440b7948

At Origin, we are committed to enabling decentralized marketplaces all over the world. We are a global company from day one and have developer partners and investors from all over the world. One of our highest priorities as a company is establishing and growing our presence in China.

The Origin Protocol team recently returned from our third time visiting China in the past 6 months and we wanted to give a special greeting to our Chinese speaking community. We highly value our Chinese speaking community, and Greater China is just as an important market to us as the United States is. Matthew Liu, co-founder of Origin, is a proud Chinese/Taiwanese-American, and we are also very honored to have Yu Pan, the only Chinese-born Paypal founder and member of the “Paypal Mafia” on our team. During this trip, we hosted packed Origin meetups in Hangzhou and Hong Kong, and we also spoke at several events in Shanghai.

Origin DApp Gets Editable Listings and Support for Multiple Items

Origin Protocol was founded on the audacious goal of replacing the myriad of centralized online marketplaces into one open source protocol. Instead of hundreds of proprietary data silos, marketplaces can now store listings on the decentralized blockchain. These marketplaces range from simple transactions like someone selling a used bicycle as on Craigslist to complex transactions like connecting a rider with nearby drivers in real time like Uber. https://medium.com/originprotocol/origin-dapp-gets-editable-listings-and-support-for-multiple-items-34aa3aaed36d

About Bonded Finance
The Bonded platform was created to incubate and deploy experimental, high-yield, smart-contract driven, financial instruments that push the bounds of open finance. Bonding is an algorithmic model that aims to unlock, aggregate and de-risk ~50 billion in dormant value distributed amongst untapped digital assets by allowing supporters of qualifying altcoin projects the opportunity to borrow against these assets or pool them and start earning.
