Title: [2018-01-11] TorGuard Accepts Payments Via Lightning Network
Post by: Rick Nolan on January 11, 2018, 07:52:28 AM
TorGuard, the virtual private network (VPN) service, announced on January 8 that users can now pay for its services in bitcoin using Lightning Network, significantly reducing transaction times and fees.

According to the firm’s representatives, an invoice fee for one month of service costs only 1 satoshi. If a user has a mainnet node for LN they can contact the company and set up a transaction using the protocol. Users must have funds to set up a channel with Torguard and the initial transaction fee to get started.

How strange that they didn't do that earlier.

There is a good reason not to do this.

No Lightning wallet software developer has released their client. As of today, pre-release development and testing is still underway for all Lightning developers. Anyone using Lightning payments today is taking a significant risk that they will lose money.

No money has been reported lost as a part of testing the Lightning protocol, but that doesn't mean that there are no flaws in the software that could let that happen.

I'll be very happy when Lightning is up and running, but using pre-release software with real money is reckless. This is premature.

I was talking about their use of crypto currencies as a payment method.

I believe that companies, especially those that sell something related to security, should wait a little longer to adopt LN as a payment method. At the moment there is no need to risk, since the fee is very low.

It is still a utility that is in the fully experimental stage. Even Bitcoin has yet to be treated as an experiment.
