But as per the education I received on #bitcoin-otc yesterday, MD5 is quite easily prone to collisions. He could potentially be using pre-computed tables of colliding strings and switching them up dynamically based on what you choose. There are MD5 collision generators (http://"http://www.win.tue.nl/hashclash/") available. I'm not making any accusations here, merely pointing out that this is possible.
