Title: Help Us Spread Bitcoin to Mexico
Post by: The Bitcoin Co-op on August 27, 2013, 12:06:09 PM
The Co-op needs your help to spread Bitcoin in Latin America! One of the venue owners we work with has venues in the Mexican city of Puerto Vallarta, and wants to take his BTC acceptance there. Trouble is, we all live in the Canadian city of Vancouver, and none of us speak a word of Spanish. Can anybody here hit the Spanish subforum on our behalf? He might go down there rather soon, but even if he could set everything up himself, the support of the local Bitcoin community would be vital, as that is what teaches other businesses that Bitcoin acceptance is good.

In return, we will thank you profusely on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/bitcoincoop). Or you can just join the Cooperative. Then you can convince more venues to accept Bitcoin, and get referral bitcoins for doing so!

Gurmeet does Corona specials, sometimes. We also sometimes have him give discounts to those who pay in BTC. ;)

Various peoples in the U.S. and mexico might be interested in Bitcoin for the whole remittances process.  Being able to send money instantaneously (and inexpensively) has its perks!

I'll be visiting PV in Feb. I told the wife that I wouldn't be surprised to see a number of vendors there readily accepting BTC on this visit. She ridiculed me soundly.

It'd be nice to have the last laugh. Or at least to be able to make at least one purchase there in BTC.

Watching.

Hey, that's great! I hope you'll pay Gurmeet a visit. Part of the way we've been convincing restaurants to accept Bitcoin is that we provide free tech support, and Gurmeet might have questions when he's at his Indian restaurant (and some other venues, maybe) in Puerto Vallarta. He'll be happy to give you a discount.

If anybody can get there before that, though, that will be good. You'll get a beer on the house, at least.  :)

We can talk to Gurmeet about it. I want him to have the best options for exchanging; he's into the idea of doing that at a venue he owns in PV.

Cool. We stay at a resort on the beach couple miles N of the Malecon. All buses and taxis for getting around. If his place is near town, we could stop by. What's the name, and where?

Mexico is definitely a place open to BTC! I think that even the border towns could really benefit from the use of BTC, and the tourist districts, especially in Baja!

This is cool - the restaurant is only a couple km south of our lodging.

This is almost cooler - I think I ate at the Vancouver location a couple months back. It was likewise very near (blocks) my lodging.

Not sure if he was accepting Bitcoin, yet, at that time. He might have just started to, actually. We just didn't give him the signs. But he's accepting Bitcoin now, if you ever come back, as are my other restaurant-owning friends. :)

By the way, Gurmeet is in Mexico RIGHT NOW. I hate to beat a dead horse, but is anybody near Puerto Vallarta?

You can all help by sending Spanish-speaking Bitcoiners who can help give tech advice when we're not there and galvanize a local Bitcoin community. You can also help by participating in CoinFest in Latin America. Chile is already confirmed, although the Mexico one will probably be much bigger.

I have 6 comic book stores in Mexico called Fantastico and Comicastle. I don't currently accept bitcoins for purchase of goods but I can trade bitcoins for cash and viceversa.

The stores are located in Monterrey, Guadalajara, Ciudad Satelite, Queretaro and Mexico City (Col. Del Valle Sur).

You can find me as 99Percent in Localbitcoins.com and can deal in fairly large quantities if needed.

If anyone is interested in setting up a conference o forum for bitcoin in Mexico I am more than eager to participate and help.

Gurmeet, one of the family owners of India Gate in Vancouver and who works with a partner in Puero Vallarta, had told me they take Bitcoin, now. He has now clarified with the following message:

"Partner has a day off today.
What happened yesterday is that he was not there, and have not told staff how to use it.
By Tuesday we hope to have everything sorted our as Monday is a holiday.

Please write this number as the contact number (Elias)"

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Please be careful and contact us before jumping to conclusions!

I just mean that Jackson of Bitcoiniacs made it sound like we made the whole thing up. The owner of the venue does know about and plan to accept Bitcoin. He was not there when called. I did prod Gurmeet many times about if it was actually ready immediately that second, and he assured me it was, and so I made an announcement based on the information given to me. I am sorry that it wasted Jackson's time; we should have remembered how passionate the community is, and that they wouldn't wait until Tuesday to try it out.

I attended the Buenos Aires conference.  Alan Safahi said his company zipzap is building out a worldwide exchange infrastructure for remittances.  Maybe you should email him:   alan.safahi@ezipzap.com
Coin4ce.com is also expanding in Latin America.

The owner of India Gate (now accepting BTC in Puerto Vallarta via the Co-op's POS "Coinos") has created a Bitcoin Meet Up for Puerto Vallarta. In addition to members, we are recruiting organizers at this stage. As the Meet Up description should be in Spanish and English, and members will likely communicate in Spanish, we need locals to help. Gurmeet will give you a beer and appy, or something, for now. We will post CoinFest here as the first event--other Meet Ups in Mexico are welcome to join us. Stephanie Murphy will be attending to speak for a bit, in case you're familiar with her work, such as Lets Talk Bitcoin.

If you would like to help, a great first project would be translating this to the Spanish Bitcoin forums and telling your friends. If you wish, you may also sponsor CoinFest Puerto Vallarta. Just as with the CoinFests in Canada (Vancouver, Winnipeg and Edmonton, so far), your bitcoins would be used to promote Bitcoin to the public in a non-profit manner. Here is the Meet Up link: http://www.meetup.com/Puerto-Vallarta-Bitcoin-Mexico-Meetup/

I've actually never been down there, so I don't know about the Malecon. :P This is why we are trying to recruit locals to join us. The India Gate guy lives in Vancouver most of the time, so whomever it is could become a primary organizer.

The CoinFest in Puerto Vallarta will be on February 15th. Maybe we could try to form another meeting, afterwards--regular Meet Ups are healthy for a community. If your friends want to have a get-together, there, you're free to organize and list something on the Meet Up.
