Title: Has Bitcointalk turned into social media?
Post by: myhometalk on January 26, 2018, 11:08:52 PM
It seems that you can't get higher up in the ranks without "likes" lately.
Which is sort of weird, because if you basically don't have friends in high places or people just don't like you at best you stay in place. Not to mention that you can get negative merits. Why? Just because maybe someone doesn't like your thread/face/English pronunciation and so on.
At least this is my opinion.

I hope I won't get negative merits, but if I do I'll have to accept the fact that just freely speaking your mind is not the best idea.

You can't get negative merit yet. It might be installed later though. You may get tagged with negative trust though. Further I agree with what you write. The forum moderation is mainly run on subjective opinions of often immature and immoral members. Thanks for giving your opinion, even when it is against that of the established circle. It is appreciated!

You can't get negative merits as far as I know, you can only gain merit.
This has been put forward as a method of increasing post quality, not of requiring you to have friends. ie: posts that contribute should tend to get merit, and the merit system should force you to contribute before you rank up.

Thanks for the answers, and I'll try to do a better job from now on; don't know if I did a good job (in people's eyes) until now, but to be honest I won't get my hopes up.
I mean, just to get to sr member status (and I think I'm being optimistic) will take me at best a year, which is just crazy.

I think you are now very optimistic. Unless something will change, the likeness to get merits for you post is incredibly low. To become Senior Member you need around 120 more activity, which corresponds to 120 days - 4 months, plus the same order of quantity of merits. I seriously doubt that you will get 1 merit every three posts you will do, so be prepared to wait a few years, unless you make thousands of posts. And still, you are almost twice as lucky lucky compare to a humble Member like me. :)

And people shouldn't need to worry about the whole merit thing...unless they're hellbent on shitposting their way to financial freedom in the Philippines because my friend teach me to trade bitcoin because bitcoin is increasing day by day... or some such thing.  The people who are worrying about the whole merit thing are the ones who should not be advancing on this forum.

That's the point.

I must agree on that. You are totally right. And I really mean it!
But of course it is *slightly* easier to say that when you already have a Legendary status. :)

No one can lock your thread but you.  /thread means he believes your topic has come to a natural conclusion.  :)

Yes, it's easy to talk when you're up already. But I'm sure that users trust a member just as much as a legendary. (because that's why you have the trust rating)
That being said, and if the "merit thing" is not important why many hero and legendary users asked for a way to differentiate themselves even more from other users?

Oh, I see. I apologize then. For a moment there I forgot that I shouldn't talk too much. Might get some kind of punishment. Hope that me just saying my mind wasn't arrogant.

I think a new rank should be added for the poor legendary users, something like "Mythical".
Like a guy here said: the rich get richer and the poor poorer.
The poor legendary got so many merits in the last 3 days and they can't do anything with them. It's a shame really.

Well, "Mythical" as a new ranking level is actually a very good idea. I have been thinking for a while that some new level would become necessary as the tsunami of newbies of the forum would advance in rank, otherwise in a few years there would be tens of thousands of Legendary - something which would look quite ridiculous. Well, now with the new rules this won't be necessary any more, very very few are likely to make it to the rank of Legendary IMHO.

Now, now, watch it there mister. You're threading into dangerous waters there.
Don't talk bad about "THE Pharmacist", you might get yourself a -2 red trust. Because he can do that, you know. And he's quick on the trigger. And he won't lose any sleep over it either.

Are you blind or just dense? Read his post, it's in agreement with TP.

 ??? ???

Neither blind, nor dense, just wanted to get a point across and used it as an opportunity. Without giving people -2 or calling them dense OR stupid. But thank you for that anyways.

Also, I'm not sure it's from bots, and also, if we're talking (and I think "TP" wrote it; not his first grammar mistake btw) it's "my friend taught me".

PS: did you see how I didn't call you stupid back, back there? What a nice guy I am, huh?

It's ok. Some people just feed on the anger. Just let it go.

TP= The Pharmacist. I just cant be bothered to write it out all the time and I think it is somewhat self explanatory.

I never meant to call you stupid, it's just that your post well and truly was. It has no context or relation to the post made by killyou72 and is just a targeted attack at "TP". If you don't like the way he is using his DT2 position, make a thread about it. Don't use the Quickseller technique of swaying the thread's original message and point of view.

If it was meant to be sarcasm, try again ;) That post wasn't very suited for such a thing.

I think we should call the new rank Mega-Magical-Ultra-Beloved-Superior, not Mythical.

That may be a little overkill ;D

Mythical doesn't sound bad tbh, however it's up to theymos to first even announce the possibility of a rank above legendary.

Mythical sounds really good, actually, but with the new rules very very few would eventually succeed ranking up to Mythical in their lifetimes - which is in fact perfectly suited for mythical creatures ;)

Well, we all know that now is harder to achieve new rank, but we need to wait and observe how Merit system will fight against spammy content. I think we will see real results after one month.

By the way @myhometalk, they didn't implement de-merits in this system.
