Title: Where is the home discussion of Lightning Network
Post by: Spendulus on January 27, 2018, 01:33:39 AM
Simple question. We're seeing lots of traffic in this subforum on the Lightning Network.

But where should it be?

Is there a proper home for it and if so where?

That's a good point. We definitely are seeing an uptick in Lightning Network related posts. In my opinion, it should be a separate child board of Bitcoin > Development & Technical Discussion. Here are my reasons -
  • It should be included on this board because it is definitely very related to Bitcoin and very much a technical discussion so far.
  • Lightning is a 'Layer-2' solution. There are various implementations, its own standards, etc. It is good to separate it out.
  • Its success affects Bitcoin, but only tangentially. There can be another standard that might (theoretically) prove to be better a year from now.
  • There is a lot of misinformation and propaganda against it as well. It is good to have a dedicated place where more knowledgeable members can educate and share their knowledge and expertise with those who know less.

Lightning is going to be a very important development for Bitcoin over the coming months/years. I think this forum needs to be prepared for handling the information around it appropriately.

Honestly most of the discussion seems to be happening in twitter these days. Reddit is full of kids upvoting memes and price pump news, not much technical discussion at all. Sometimes there's a good post but that's about it.

I would like to see a Lightning Network subforum eventually. I expect a ton of lightning network nodes until it becomes more mainstream. Maybe it's a good idea to compartmentalize that inside a subforum and try to make it "the lightning network forum", as far as I know no one has a "the to go lightning network forum" niche yet.

I’d love to see dedicated subforum to learn about LN, free from FUD and pointless shilling. It’s very important to understand baseline limitations and advantages of the tech, for me at least.

This developer section seems fine for me or else it's gets hidden away in one of the many sub-forums
here that few people get to read.

FUD seems to be a word used when someone does not agree with the decisions of the Bitcoin development
team here but i say if the cap fits let the fudge it if the argument is backed up with facts and logic

How legit is this?

Apparently some people reported loss of funds. Im not surprised to find out about this since the developers have warned about how the software is still in very early versions but I didn't see this mentioned here I think, and I didn't see this on reddit as far as I can find.

There aren't specific forum, but if you don't include technical discussion, i've seen many people talk about LN in r/Bitcoin & /r/lightningnetwork aside from "Development & Technical Discussion".

Looks like a pretty small subreddit, I also didn't see about that there.

I've seen reports of some people losing funds on Twitter, but really, it is nothing to be alarmed about. For some reason, Blockstream is pushing for Lightning Network even before it is production ready, so some enthusiastic participants may lose some money. Some of the other Lightning developers prefer a more wait and see approach and make this 'live' only after a more thorough testing (Elizabeth Stark, for example, from Lightning Labs, falls in the latter category).

r/Bitcoin has a good amount of discussion about Lightning too.

I believe there is no need for a subforum on the Lightning Network. Not yet. Because if the mods make yet another subforum, then the newbies will only start ignoring it simply for being isolated. It is better for Lightning threads to be in the open and be more welcoming and accessible to the newbies. They might learn something.

It is a complicated beast and could well be different to whats in the LN white-paper because programming is
reiterative which often leads to changes and I was told it would be 6-9 months before we see anything but then
I hear it was released very quietly.

Fact is the development team is not talking to the public and just doing as they please but I won't hold the
odd bugs against them too much, it happens now and then but it's how they resolve it that counts.

I don't think blockstream is pushing the lightning network in a way that's nonsensical due it's early stages. They have set up a shop that only sells small items like stickets and t-shirts and so on for a reason: so in case something goes wrong, there isn't a big loss of funds.

The total amount of money held in the network is very small, I don't think people are being reckless, must people involved in this early stage knows that if you lose any funds, it comes with the territory of wanting to be a pioneer. Someone has to do it so the bugs show up and they can be fixed.

Lol at that.

However I believe that my initial question "Where is the home discussion of lightning network" is reasonably well answered.

There is currently no home. There is some here, some on twitter, some on reddit.

I'm not trying to place a value judgement on that, just seeking to establish what the reality is.

I too think it would have been reasonable to have a subforum for Lightning. It is a paradigm change as far as feature additions to bitcoin are concerned. Its success mostly depends on the network effect it'll garner.
In fact, the forum is probably one of the places where having widespread adoption from individuals could contribute a lot to the success of LN.

I am just going to use this thread now to bump a topic i started with the intention to discuss ideas on how we as a community can rally to make sure SegWit and LN have the desired effect. For your considerations: Thoughts on Supporting SegWit/LN and not Big blocks (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2817109).

Sorry if someone's a BCH fan as I am not sold on its merits and claim to the legacy.

I don't really think there's a home, but there's a few slack channels I'd check out, namely the one for LND, I think there might be one for c-lightning too. Lots of technical discussion happens there.

Very interesting and (seems to me) apolitical article.

RE "adoption of Segwit" I would point out that certain uses, such as paper wallets, really do best with traditional "legacy addresses." Number of reasons for that but I think they are self evident.

RE LN / Segwit, although clearly Segwit is a part of the Bitcoin modified algorithm LN is not. LN is as separate from bitcoin as a horse and it's rider.
