Title: How to power up a riser?
Post by: albertorma on January 29, 2018, 04:40:15 PM
I am very noob in hardware, sorry if this question is stupid.

I built my first rig with a colorful motherboard which had only pcie x16. Even if it wasn't the most economic, It was noob friendly. 0 problems.

For my new rig I bought a motherboard with 18 pci x1. My risers seem to have a molex to sata adapter ( https://www.amazon.es/Express-Extender-Riser-adaptador-alimentaci%C3%B3n/dp/B01MPY7W3W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1517243639&sr=8-2&keywords=riser ). I had read some of this adapters can burn...

I see SATA and MOLEX use diferent number of pins, so I want to do this correctly.

How should I power this riser? Can I use the peripheral cable from my psu directly? What is better? Using the peripheral cable from my psu directly? Or is It better to use sata from psu + adapter?

Thanks and happy mining :)

Yeah i would suggest that you use the molex or sata directly from the psu to the riser.

Also dont power more then 2 risers per cable, if sata i would not put more then one cable  per riser.
If you choose to use the adapter that u get with the riser you can let it run for a while then feel if the adapter cables feel  cool medium/ hot or flesh burning hot.

Hot cables just throw them away.  I would suggest that you get the 6 pin risers (pcie), they have worked great for me.

What psus do you have planned for your asus motherboard?  3 750 w evga supernova g3?

PS.  remember to check so that you have put the riser 1x to the motherboard in the right way, heard of people putting it in the wrong way and poff you got yourself a motherboard to scrap.

NEVER use Sata for powering risers
