Title: Crypto mania hurting PC Gamers
Post by: filharvey on February 03, 2018, 01:54:59 PM
Nowadays its been a bad time for PC gamers to build their new gaming PCs as graphic cards prices have increased due to the short of supply of GPU cards mostly due to crypto miners buying them in bulk quantities to mine cryptocurrencies. In fact, all the mid and high range graphic cards from AMD and Nvidia are in short supply.

Nvidia has even advised its retail partners to give priority to gamers instead of miners but it seems that retailers turn a deaf ear to such advices since they get impressive margins by selling graphic cards to miners.

It seems that this situation would continue until crypto mania exists due to increase in crypto coins prices.

As far as I know,Bitcoin can't be mined through GPU.You can mine Eth, Zcash , Monero and similar cryptocurrencies with GPUs.
Also, now alot of chinese brands are popping up, making quality GPUs for an affordable price so Nvidia and gamer brands would get less pressure when chinese brands will enter completly the market.

I saw this news on TV, it seems to me that this will not change anything and lovers of playing games will have to buy video cards at inflated prices

this also happens in my city, graphics card prices go up very drastically and make it difficult for those who want to use graphics card just for playing games or office purposes for designer/video graphics and not for mining, my friend even prefer looking for a secondhand graphics card that cost cheaper.
the graphics card companies should immediately think of a solution to this problem.

Yep. I built a gaming rig this week. I paid not too far off double retail for the GPU.

I don't really care because it was paid for with bitcoin profits but it does suck for regular people.

It's not just GPUs. Ram is also insane too.

I wonder if such a thing as a crypto tuned GPU will ever be a thing, or if it's relevant at all.

Yeah i also read it here http://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-wants-retailers-to-prioritize-gamers-over-cryptocurrency-miners/ that nvidia tells retailers to prioritize the gamer over the cryptocurrency miners. Im also a pc gamer and its so hard to buy a high end graphic card today because all of retailers said it was soldout already.

you are right it is more demand in market so cost also increasing in graphic cards. But Samsung company start a project in graphic cards it is very cheap and compact of other graphics cards. So everyone wait for the launching because I am also buy Nvidia cards they give only three months of warranty But I am expecting 1to 2 years warranty so I am eagerly waiting for good potential cards.

PC gamers are misinformed: you cannot mine bitcoin directly with discrete graphics cards, you need a dedicated ASIC for that kind of operation. I've seen too many rants of gamers about miners and bitcoin mining when in fact these cards are used to mine zcash and ethereum most of the time. Also, some major stores in the area I live don't allow people to buy the cards in bulk to give priority to gamers, so there's that. And the insane jump on ram prices isn't even caused by mining but from phone manufacturers.

Sometimes, news outlets don't even think straight when publishing an article. Journalism is dead, the only thing these guys care about are the hits and the pay and not informing the public with the right kind of information.

So for gamers hard times have come. Since the price of the video card has become quite high. This is beneficial in the first place to video card sellers. Mining has flooded the whole world now. Therefore, in this case, it is possible only to accept the new prices on the cards

However, the media are raving about cryptocurrencies driving up the prices for graphic cards...

Samsung is not going to produce video cards!!!

Samsung is going to make two things that somewhat related to mining:
a) is going to produce chips (not miners) for bitcoin , sha256 mining
b) is going to produce GDDR6 memory but that is an old story, since they started the development back in 2016.

Ethereum switching (as they planned) to PoS probably will end the GPU madness.

In my country there are quite a few bitcoin farms that are growing and harvesting day and night. Farms use mostly graphics cards that are highly configurable to exploit and deliver significant performance gains. Graphics cards that reduce performance are often sold cheaply to gamers to improve their gaming experience. At cheap prices gamers can buy their own graphics cards very well and they are very happy about that.
