Auction giant eBay wants to know how you feel about Bitcoin.

An undated post on eBay's Deals blog titled "What's the Deal with Bitcoins Anyway" featured a two-minute video encapsulating many of the pros and cons of the virtual currency.

They tried to contain their enthusiasm, but I would still say this is rather more positive than negative.

Seems like ebay wants to hop on the Bitcoin bandwagon and is looking for support or explantation in case somebody (like government or stockholders) asks them "why did you go into Bitcoins ?".

UPDATE:

What i actually meant to say was that Ebay may be looking for *justification* for implementing Bitcoin, I was just missing the word.

My buddy got a call from Ebay inquiring as to how/why they should implement it and said they have a team analyzing it.

Exciting times!

i heard its a hack:

"As posted before it's fishy, the post doesn't show up where it is supposed to, in http://deals.ebay.com/blog list.
If you enter "bitcoin" in the search page it turns out it was posted on August 20, 2013 4:30 pm.
It should turn up currently at this page: http://deals.ebay.com/blog/page/20/

But it doesn't.
Looks like somebody who works there is a Bitcoin Evangelist and tries to make it look as official as possible while trying to avoid detection from eBay."

"When queried, an eBay spokeswoman said the company has not changed its payment policies. "The video is strictly informational," she said via email. "
That doesn't sound like it was an hack.

They are like any other business and will have to do a cost-benefit analysis to see if adding bitcoin as a payment option will generate more fiat profit.  Maybe someday businesses will do a cost-benefit analysis to determine if they can generate more BTC profit.

I would think that Ebay and Paypal would realize that the need to get involved with Bitcoin somehow or risk losing their monopoly on online auctions and easy payments.  Of course, they probably think they are too big to have any fear but hopefully someone is logical enough to realize that they should be concerned a bit.

I don't think that Bitcoin kills Paypal at all because there are valued-added things which Paypal can do such as manage escrow, dispute resolution, merchant non-performance penalties, AML checks. Bitcoin and PayPal can run side by side for a long time, both making eBay work better. We don't 'know yet but fiat might be around for a few decades as crypto grows. Also the sooner that ebay/paypal integrate bitcoin services then the sooner they have a market advantage which they could hang onto ahead of other competition.

Kodak spurned digital camera tech until it was too late. In hindsight they should have taken the risk and embraced it. The same principle applies here.

the only concern with this is payments made from customer wallet if you pay from mtgox green address that will be ok because ebay cant link your home direction to bitcoin address

YES.  I hope ebay and Paypal can learn from mistakes other companies have made.  We will see.

Exactly!  Paypal can never be ubiquitous.  They have a large share, but of a relatively small and constrained market with competitors entering left and right.  If ebay thinks strategically long term, it makes sense to give up some revenue from that division, in exchange for a leader position as an add-on service provider to a potentially global Bitcoin economy.

also notice: if they add it, with their profesionell structure and market cap that they have, they would be the market leader from that day!
