Title: Merit Bug
Post by: marlboroza on February 07, 2018, 01:19:02 AM
I have found merit bug.

This shitposter user https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1134109 was full member earlier today.

His activity dropped to 51(however his activity should be 0 because he is spammer) and he become Junior member(user was Full member and if I am correct mod trashed his 80 posts), however his "merit activity" remained the same - 100 merits, and I honestly think that his merits should drop to 0.

I think this is something you should look at.

I think mods have deleted his posts due to which activity declined. I think merit will remain the same as it was set up as initial merit per account rank when merit system started. Not a bug IMO.

Remember merit shown in account doesn't decreases. What shown in merit official thread shows a chart with required merit for ranks and not a merit count per account rank.

Hes got no merit maybe it will adjust? Even though theymos said at one point deleted posts still hold their merit

OMG! I have checked his last posts, extremely shitty-posts. For now, his rank is Junior Member, merit points is 100. As malboroza said, this is one of bug of the merit system, and Theymos should fix it.

If one account's posts deleted, their activities, merits, and rank should be consequential down.

They're so shitty that I neutral-tagged him as a shitposter.  Thanks to Marlboroza for bringing this stinker to my attention.  This wretch definitely does not deserve 100 merit points if he got busted down a level.  If there were justice in the world, he'd get busted all the way back to brand new--but either way, this guy is only one shitposter and I doubt he's going to be moving up the ranks to even Full Member anytime soon with the garbage he's posting.  I shan't lose any sleep over him.

Have they fixed it that your alt accounts can not give you a merit point.

I tested a while ago and mentioned that my alt judypug1956 was able to give my major account philipma1957 a merit point.

to me that is not good at all

look at my points

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=64507

I gave philipma1957 1 point from judypug1956 on jan 25th

It seems to me  this needs to be fixed.

I don't think it's a bug per se. Everyone was basically given merit depending on what rank they were on when theymos launched the system. This was a one time thing so he probably used a script to award everyone the initial merits. That means merit has nothing to do with ranking down as far as the code goes.

But yeah this guy might need his merit adjusted lol.

I don't see any bug and think, he is punished enough for losing two ranks. I also think, that merits are recalculated once a year, so that he will lose the rest of his merits.
Edit: But we could introduce negative merits, earned by deleted spamming posts.

I do not think this is a bug here. It is just that we do not have an option to reverse the merit points once given.

Even though this isn't a bug (as mentioned by few others), perhaps demerit system should be implemented (not for everyone, only for admins and moderators):
I could add demerits pretty easily later on if necessary, though.

This wretch definitely does not deserve 100 merit points if he got busted down a level.
Indeed. A demerit system will do wonders (for such cases)...

Have they fixed it that your alt accounts can not give you a merit point.
Not directly but based on the following line, it will decay in the future:
Merit sales, transfers to aliases, back-and-forth trading, etc. are not much of an issue. All illegitimate merit will decay, and will account for a tiny and very expensive fraction of the total merit economy. It's basically a rounding error; fight it where convenient, but waste no sleep over it.

Admins and mods already overworked.  Give DT members the ability to demerit?

No thanks - the ranks need to be cleaned up first.  Too much nepotism right now.
