I am a long-term Bitcoin Bull for many reasons. One reason not considered by many is the collectability of Bitcoins.  Many fiat currencieshave plummeted to monetary worthlessness, but all of them are collectable now, from The Continental, the the CSA dollar, to the Weimar Deutchmark to the Zimbabwe dollar.  In each case, they became collectables. 

Bitcoins are the world's first distributed cryptocurrency.  Even if Namecoin or some other currency eventually surpasses it, nothing else will ever be the first.  I don't think BTC will be surpassed, nor do I think it will plummet to monetary worthlessness, but even if it did, it would still have numismatic value.  The fact that they are merely cryptographic tokens doesn't change anything.

In addition, clean, unused bitcoins (in groups of 50, 25, 12.5 btc, etc) will be even more collectible.

If you're solo mining and find a block, try to spend your used coins first and save your shiny new ones for last.

(The Franklin Mint turned out a broad range of "collectable" stuff during the 1970s and 1980s.  Some of their junk can be purchased on eBay, usually at a big discount. Just because it's "collectable" doesn't mean it will appreciate.)

well, there is a bunch of 10 bitcoins that I would like to have a few cents from ...
the first transaction ever - satoshi -> hal. 10 bitcoins in early 2009
they were spent partially late 2010 and I hope i will get a connection to them.
this is my numismatic goal - hands on the first bitcoins in circulation.
p.s. i have som coins from the 10.000 btc pizza already and trying to get a 50 coins block with 1 or two sends from mining to my wallet max, to have a complete set of noteworthy coins.
oh, and I sell the zimbabwe $ notes as well, to get some bitcoins, never mined myself ;)

The fact that they are just intangible letters and numbers without a database to confirm them, they will be completely worthless.

yes, those coins I try to get. I had a look if they moved and yes, indeed they are in circulation.

I'd like to get some of the coins that were withdrawn from the compromised MtGox account during the superhack.  That's history. Any way to find out which coins they were?

try blockexplorer for transactions from that day (time & date can be found in the thread i'm kevin and this is my version) to find exactly the coins that interest you. kevin wrote that he put the coins into the gavin's escrow. other withdrawn coins i did not follow.

i dunno if there's a way to get it into one's possession without tainting it, other than getting all other blocks out of the wallet which contains it and taking ownership of that wallet.  i don't even know if that's possible.  is it?

i'd also pay 75 BTC each for blocks 2 - 8.

to own an untainted block you have to mine it. if you collect btc, prepare for having an extra transaction in the history as it comes to you. => not any more uncirculated
you can get a copy of the private key from an address that has a block in it but the seller would have always a copy, thus I advise you to bite the extra transaction and have them transferred to an address of yours where only you have the spending rights

Actually potential value as a collectible was one of the main reasons I ordered some bitbills.
I'm hoping I get the early beta version and not their newer version... but I might have been a bit late for that.

Even if bitcoin doesn't eventually succeed - it's cemented it's place in internet history - so I guess the early bitbills will have *some* value.

Given all the abandoned assets on Second Life - for which many people paid real money - I'm not sure that being a geek accessory is a good thing.

This blog post is so inane that it's only effect will be to discourage the people whom we don't want in yet anyway.  I bought some BTC with linden dollars two months ago and I am still way ahead for doing so, even after the crash.
