Title: BTC vs Paypal: Propaganda Warfare
Post by: finnthecelt on July 15, 2011, 02:08:19 PM
Something is happening right now that I want to bring to everyone's attention. Maybe it's already out there so if it is please alert me.

You are all probably aware of the PayPay road trip? There's an excellent story linked from Bitcoin Watch here: http://www.bitcoinmoney.com/post/7542341527/paypal-digital-currency-challenge (http://www.bitcoinmoney.com/post/7542341527/paypal-digital-currency-challenge)

PayPal is attempting to trump Plato's road trip in an egregious yet subtle way. I didn't put much thought into it initially until I realized they were using the words "digital currency". Obviously this is propaganda warfare and therefore we must pick up our axes (or any other weapon of choice, mine's the keyboard!).

If they can get enough media attention directed towards this (and you know the "establishment" will support them) they can bump Plato's story down the list significantly on any major search engine out there.

Anyone who types "digital currency" in Google will find Paypal, not BTC. I think this is their goal.

We need to support ideas like this http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=28397.0 (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=28397.0) and get Plato's story out there a little more. Hey maybe we create a Pilgramage Route for others to follow!!! Tell me that wouldn't get news!! :D

Don't worry. Given the recent media coverage on Bitcoin, there are good chances that this will fire back at them.
Expect to read news about "Paypal trying to hijack the Bitcoin wave"

Don't do those two suggestions.  There is far more efficient ways to game Google if that is the route you would want to go.  If you want long keyterms, or short ones for that matter, they have programs that will grab your words and terms for you.   But I say leave that to the SEO's, certainly though the people here could be used for something better than searching certain terms though (I do not mean to poo poo the idea and offer no solutions otherwise, I just think that the effort could be placed elsewhere is all)

Hey guys, let's try and make the front page of somewhere today and make sure PayPal's name is right there next to Bitcoin so people can see the better alternative to what PayPal is trying to promote :)

"Anyone who types "digital currency" in Google will find Paypal, not BTC."

I did just that, and guess what. Bitcoin is #3 on the first page. It's #1 if you search "new digital currency", which is not outside the realm of possibility as a semi-common long tail keyword (phrase) search.

This is my 100th post on this forum. If my calculations are correct, I'm now a full member. Hopefully, my entelligence continues to shine through in each additional posting.

Signed in, Bitcoin comes up as 3rd result

Signed out on a different machine, comes up as #2, very interesting (not bitcoin.org mind you, but just someone has proper SEO work done on the term).   I can definitely see this as a push for PayPal to grab that term, even if not necessary on purpose, they have the power to take it if no one does anything now while they are setting up history on the internet with the term.

Propaganda is what you need when you have a lie to sell.  BTC is superior in so many ways, no wonder pp is scared. We don't need propaganda.

Yes that's the link I posted in the OP.

And you're right we don't need propaganda but information sells and we need our information out there so the public can be informed. The German people during WWII would have benefited from better information, no?

I also noticed an article promoting Paypal on Android as 'P2P':

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2011/07/paypal-debuts-peer-to-peer-payments-on-smartphones-via-nfcp2p-paypal-payments-coming-via-nfc-capable-phones.ars

Perhaps they mean P2P as opposed to B2B?  Either way, it seems another PR effort to hijack terms associated with Bitcoin.
