Title: Custom Made Mining Cases! [Made to your demands!]
Post by: Trini8ed on July 16, 2011, 08:26:43 AM
I have decided to start using my materials to make custom cases for you guys I will customize it to anyone's needs as of now I only have 2 models made anyone who is interested in buying or requesting a custom change the the frame please pm me or post in the thread  ;D I can edit the case to be anything you want add fans put psu in a different spot and change how the video cards are laid out.

Here is the model I have at the moment will add more if this is successful and people are interested!

PLEASE NOTE: The metal bar supporting the cards will not fit cards with a dvi slot at the top so if you plan on putting 5970's in this please let me know so if you plan to order.

Guys for now I am halting on these as they were to hard to produce and were costing me a lot more money then the listed price. Since I have seen bitcoins start to pick back up again I may in the enar future re open this and start making cases out of wood and shipping them to you as kits, but as far as I know this may not happen for a while. Have complete the 2 projects I have started shipped out 1 of the cases to belguim hope Ssoele.be gets his case soon! As for the second client I have I will be shipping his out shortly.

Design CHEAP! (Selling for 110$ If in USA I estimate 10$ to ship):
This model has 1 psu's and whatever the motherboard can hold.

Added another model, fully enclosed for external exhaust cards so all the air is brought in through the back and exhausted out the front! FOR EXTERNAL EXHAUST CARDS ONLY!!!!!!

Not yet but I have one that will look similar!

http://www.stomped.me/pics/100_0253.JPG

Will look like that but will have a plexi glass bottom with motherboard stand offs in it.

Can you make them rackable?

With maybe 2 boards behind each other?

19" wise, 5 * 1.75" high, 100cm deep? ;)

What do you mean by rackable do you mean stable and if you mean stackable it would not be very wise because I don't think that can be stacked without being flimsy. Also are you wanted model 2 or model 1 to be made like that?

Designed to fit in a standard 19-inch rack (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/19-inch_rack).

Idk if I can do that I mean 2 motherboards mean twice the gpu's but also is meaning that the gpu's in front of the will exhaust all the air to the new cards unless I figured out a nice way to cool it and having it 100 cm deep is very long it would be easier for me to do half that...

Also it may need to be a 6U instead of a 5U I have ran into a height issue with the cards not leaving enough clearance for the cpu cooler.

Here's what my cooling solution is on the 6U tell me what you think?

Where do you live?

How much to have the first model made and shipped in the USA? Looks badass.

the first design is 100$ for parts and labor. Shipping I think would be 30-40$ for in the US

What about selling it in pieces or partially assembled? Where are you located?

I live in Oregon and I don't charge for labor so 100$ is the price for it labor and making it gives me something to do lol. If you live in Oregon you can come pick it up and shipping won't be really that expensive I would say 30$ at most.

No problem at all. Even in parts I assume you'd have to punch some holes and at least prep the parts. Cases look awesome though I'll keep it in mind. =)

Wel, 100cm is 100cm because ..... these days standard racks are 100cm deep for the computers ;) There is not really a awy to dispute this.

I would also like all 4 power supplies to take air from the front. Actually you must be able to totally hadle this from the front (reset, power buttons, cable plugs) because one CAN NOT stand behind a full rack without getting into a lot of hot air in a hot room ;)

I like the way you put air halfway around.

For shipping, sending half assembled would be better, I agree.

6 HE is a loss of 12 cards / one case per rack. A rack has normally 42 units in height, and 5 x 8 are 40 ;) sadly, 6 x 7 is 42 so that means filling the rack full, havving to deal with where to put the network stuff (no unit free) etc.

I would definitly like 5 units high when possible.

Hot air exchaust may not be so problematic - there can be a LOT of air flowing through. Would have to be tested out. I mean, seriously ,even sucking in the hot air from the cards in front - the back cards get a lot more airflow than cards in most closed normal cases.

* I would ty a version without hot / cold aisle.
* Spread the cards out better. There is no reas ony ou have to stop on the motherboard. You can actually mvoe them out on the other side - raiser cards have a length. Tiere is no reason the cards are over the CPU ;) This kils the CPU cooler argument for 5 HE. ALTERNATIVELY - there is no reason that cards are mounted vertically, but that is problematiic from making. Would requite a custom piece of metal attach them like with a 45 degree turn. It would help, though, with the clearance for the cables ;)
* WIthout aisle you also dont need that much difference between the boards, which creates space.
* You may want to stabilize more. There is no reason in the front for the vertical bar, but one bweeen the boards would be nice. What do you plan to use as base materia lfor the lower plate?

Leaves teh question where to put the 4 power supplies, which is something I am havving a problem with at the moment, too.

I'm guessing you've made something similar for yourself, so:

1.What sort of noise levels do you get? I'm hoping for something that will being the noise level of a 6970/6990 down to bearable levels, and I suppose there's no sound insulation on this so the cooling would have to be significant.

2. I could always glue sound insulation to the outside, but with the gpu's arses hanging in the wind most of the noise would already have exited. Any plans for external exhaust baffles?

3. Any assembly required? Drilling holes etc?

4. postage OS?

Cheers

It will only be as loud as the fans you install are the case itself is 100% silent lol...

Um I don't think you need an exhaust baffle it is not that loud...

Nope will come fully assembled with rubber fan mounts and motherboard stand offs all installed!

I think postage on the first one will be 30$ but for model 2 i think maybe 40-50 due to the bigger size?

Airflow is not really needed the video card pulls air that's next to it. putting hot air into another set of cards is a bad idea because it can't cool down at all if the air is the same temp the gpu is... I'm not trying to get cool air onto the cards I'm trying to keep the hot air from touching the cards in the back.

Installed fans might not be loud, but the 69xx series gpu fans are excruciatingly loud above 50%. It's why I thought  baffles might be ok but I'm not a good enough engineer to make sure that they wouldn't increase back pressure to the point that the fans start heating up again.

Postage only $30 even OS? Usually international postage kills me.

The design is nice, but be careful in putting more than 1 fan as you do in the lower intake: if don't do some calculation there is the risk that a fan blow more air than the subsequent can move and so you introduce only a brake that slow down air flux. Is better to use a single well dimensioned fan in the intake and one in the exhaust.

Lets get serio0us ;) This last one of yours - how much you ask for one? How much is international shipping to poland? And .... where do the2 power supplies go? ;)

Willing to give 1 a try... if anything else does not work out it isa nice test cae for trying out new hardware outside of a stackable component. IF things work out, I have to stack them up quite high to build a wall ;)

a triangular bracing structure wouldnt be a bad idea if his aluminum was plate or rod but since he's using tubular aluminum he should be fine for somehting as small as a computer case.

build one and see what kind of loads it can take put a known weight(approximate bricks/books lifting weights if you have them ect..) on it in multiple orientations if it needs the bracing and you do it slowly you'll see it start to buckle before it fails if not you can take the picture as proof it's not necissary.

Carbon steel is wonderful stuff, but it rusts unless you paint it carefully. And you still have stuctural issues if you do not cross brace.

Carbon steel will be riged enough from something this small to not flex he's using tubular members

Part of the design spec is for it to be stacked. Once someone loads these things 10-20 units high cross bracingand rigity will be essential.

Just found out I can make it out of carbon steel for the same price! The only price that will change is the cost to ship it because its a heavier metal

Carbon steel is wonderful stuff, but it rusts unless you paint it carefully. And you still have stuctural issues if you do not cross brace.

Considering to have it welded.

Now you are getting into some really messy stuff. After it is welded you will need to thoroughly wirebrush or sandblast before painting if you hope to stave off rust.

Maybe i missed this earlier in the thread, but how is the motherboard mounted to the case. Are you using a prebuilt MB tray?

I would be interested in a case like the original (low in height) for 2 PSU, 1 MB and 6 double wide GPU.

I would be interested in a bulk buy after buying one for testing purposes.

The motherboard is screwed into standoffs in the plexi glass also do you want fans? or just open air stack able ones are easy to do nice airflow in.

Alright guys just got the plastic today as well with the corner braces and weather strip to give the cards something to rest on instead of sitting on metal hehe also the person who bought this design is Airwhale thanks for him so I could build the first case :D

Here are the pics guys:

Here is the design he wanted:

Just did another piece here are the pics of my favorite blow torch and the comparison with the melted sides :3 also took some pics of the unfinished plexi glass. Hard to see the comparison since I didn't do a quick stroke with the flame making it more blurred.

Absolutely fantababulous.

So you can craft rackmount versions?  I have a 42U rack and I would be interested in getting the whole thing as densely populated with cards as possible.

These cases are not strong enough for be put in a rack mount case these cases are made for shelf's not to be held in in some odd way unless you get a shelf in a rack mount server and put it there that would work good.

I'd be interested to buy a few, but could you post more info and stuff? Size, pricing, stackability, pics with real cards in the case, etc. Maybe you should start a website, because I am confused between the different "versions"?

Well I'm thinking about going to sell them on calesaurus but idk he wants them is some designs when I make it custom for each customer so idk but will be a lot better since people can't trust anyone on the forums anymore because everyone gets scammed lol there really needs to be a rep system also that last case was 250$ for him because it had that upper self and the bottom shelf really adds a lot of money to the cost I think I can make that same design made to fit 7 cards for 180 without the top shelf and the bottom shelf hoping you just use an ssd and use a usb cs drive temp to install the os.

Well I don't think stacking would be a great idea your best bet for stacking would be this

http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=202493257&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&MERCH=REC-_-search-1-_-NA-_-202493257-_-N&locStoreNum=4018

Then just fit them on the shelves like this also the is um i think 27" x 11.5" x 14" thats pretty close btw also I think I can do the design I just made for 180$ love to hear a reply!

first, I LOVE the idea of your custom cases.. You've put a lot of work into these, and they're well done, well thought out, and not ugly!! I'll probably be buying at least 1-2 of your cases.

However, In order to run 7 cards, don't you need to be using the x1/x16-to-x16 adapters with power tap like these..

https://cablesaurus.com/bmz_cache/c/c916e74a1ff450f66f305e5fa5e1c309.image.200x150.jpghttps://cablesaurus.com/bmz_cache/2/231353a35b98eb9b954af1a26bdb8bd1.image.200x150.jpg

to avoid pulling too much juice from the motherboard?

at 7x$25, you've added $175 to your build cost, which removes some of the $$ advantage of going 7 cards wide? You're already buying two power supplies... am I missing something?

You really only need the extenders with voltage for the last 2-3 cards and you always use extenders with my cases its made to what you want it to look like if you have a custom design you want me to make it to I'll do it not really made for a normal user who wants a computer case haha

There is no permission needed to make someones design if they post a pic you can make the same case. :/ I would make something like that but would use the metal I use currently.

Not to mention the materials he used are very weak very flimsy my cases are firm as a rock to a certain extent.

Well just thought I would update the status and let people know that of the 2 cases I have made are done and 1 is shipped off hoping to start making more cases since bitcoin's seem to be getting up in price! Until I can find a cheaper method of making these cases like out of wood and send an assembled kit for you to put together.
