Title: Can Bitcoin become a daily currency?
Post by: GaboCarranza on February 14, 2018, 04:03:07 PM
Bitcoin transactions are way slower than other cryptos and fees are high, and when you pay with bitcoin you pay with only fractions of it, so do you think it is possible for bitcoin to become a daily currency? Something you can use to pay for coffee? If no, then what cryptocurrency have this potential?

It's likely right now for Bitcoin to become a daily currency because of high fees and long confirmation time. Also because many people consider Bitcoin more an asset and speculative tool rather than a currency.

Bitcoin will not become a daily currency, fees are too high. There are plenty tokens with low fees which can be used for daily trades.

Yes there is possibility, and looking forward to it, I mean one day if we could just top our digital wallet on a scanner and we can have buffet for dinner.
Many people are trying to find ways, for them to exchange their service for cryptos, in our country catering private service is accepting bitcoin for cupcakes.... Lets wait other also for them to prepare themselves with this kind of transaction.

well, you need to be using cryptocurrencies first before starting a topic about them. and you my friend have not been using bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency. because if you did use bitcoin then you would have already known that bitcoin transaction fees are not only not high but they are at their lowest right now. and transactions are instant the confirmation takes time which is limited by the time a block is found, 10 min on average.
before moving on i have to mention Lightning Network which is currently working and transactions on there are nearly free and instant.

regarding other cryptocurrencies if you ever use any of them you will see that they also have similar issues to bitcoin. some even more serious issues. the fact that these issues are not surfaced yet is because nobody uses them. it is like a highway with a big ditch in the middle of it that only 1 car per day passes that highway. nobody will hear about that ditch until the highway is used more often and disasters happen.

Well I accept Bitcoin payments on my store, I don't really care about the transaction time and fee as long as the payment is successful, however, I was thinking about the posibility of Bitcoin (or any other crypto) of becoming not only a daily currency but maybe a worldwide currency?

I think bitcoin is too slow in terms of confirmation, it can even take hours. Another crypto that might be better is eth.

maybe bitcoin takes a lot of correction if you want to use as a means of daily payment, bahwasannya very slow confirmation takes hours to make jams of small transactions. maybe another crypto could be faster.

Yes, bitcoin can become a daily currency if one create a digital wallet and then can swipe over our phone or maybe even a card. This will create easiness to the billing system.

then it is even more strange that you are saying fees are high now that they have been extremely low for a very long time!

as for the possibility, bitcoin is currently a daily currency and a worldwide currency! look at some stats, there are lots of users from all around the world, there are bitcoin nodes from every country on earth, there are merchants in most countries, and according to BitPay they are processing $110 million every month and that is just one payment processor we can't measure the whole thing there are around $1-$2 billion transferred through bitcoin on daily basis!

i think the first priority for us to use bitcoin for daily life payments is low fee and convinient, however bitcoin is not, we all know bitcoin is extremely slow is making blocks confirmations, it needs more time to make transactions, but we need everything fast and convinient in payments nowadays, so bitcoin is not is good candidate to become a daily currency, i personally don't accept bitcoin become payment currency.

Bitcoin doesn’t need to be an everyday currency, but rather serve as the store of value in the representative form of digital gold. If that is the case, then higher transaction fees and long confirmation times reduce the incentive for participants to move money, leading to more hodling, theoretically reducing the supply and increasing the price. Other currencies can then serve as the decentralized payment method to allow for fast and low-cost transactions.

This is going to take a lot of time. No, crypto currency has this potential currently. Also, such chnages will happen gradually but people will keep using cash for smaller transactions.

Without changes to the basic structure of bitcoin, I don't see it being used for coffee, directly. And I'm a coffee fanatic, so this disappoints me a great deal more than it probably should :D

However, Lightning network has the potential to change that. While not DIRECT, it still makes it possible for small transactions to be both viable and affordable, much in the same way that a Visa card makes access to your bank account (which takes FAR LONGER to settle than a bitcoin transaction) available and accessible at merchants.

I know I'll catch some flack about that, so I'll just be out with it now. I'm in favor of Lightning, and yes, I do realize it is somewhat contrary to the 'original' vision of Bitcoin. That being said, it solves a great many of the problems that are currently plaguing bitcoin and creating barriers to general acceptance. After nearly 8 years of direct participation, I've seen great strides in the Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency sphere... but it remains a niche. Lightning could make it scale to the mainstream.

Isn't that what we want?

for the moment I think it is impossible, it's about transaction costs and delivery takes time
just imagine if bitcoin is used in everyday life, for example when you are queuing to pay for toll road, imagine congestion on the toll road that happened, due to too long waiting time of payment confirmation.  :D :D :D
it will create congestion "worst". throughout history due to bitcoin  ;D

Pay for coffee is possible, there are even existing coffee shop that accept bitcoin as a payment across the world, but payment for every thing I think is is far enough from reality. Let says you see an exotic street food during your travel at thailand,  those side walk vendor won't accept you bitcoin payment, some even don;t accept dollars. That is my local fiat were present to be a legal and popular tender on each country.

Until the capital gains tax situation is either changed, or supported with a new app or something, Bitcoin can only be a commodity and store of wealth.

Otherwise, the IRS will want to know the capital gain you had every time you buy a cappuccino with your Bitcoin, and that would be a book keeping nightmare.
I have not sold or spent bitcoin anyway.
HODL!

Bitcoin is not currently used as a daily currency. I know it takes time to complete this process. Problems with low transfer rate and high fee fees have to be resolved. Improvement processes in the present technology should be improved.
Yes there are many improvements that bitcoin needs and our society that received it. Everyone should be aware what bitcoin is so that they know on how to use bitcoin and knowing also the big potential of it. Bitcoin can enables sending money wherever we are but the fees are the problem and we should be focus on that so that it can be low and many people can be able to use it.

Bitcoin will be able to become a digital currency for daily purchases of small value, if it successfully implemented a network of lightning or phantom. Then it is expected that payment in bitcoin will be made almost instantly and with the slightest transactions, which are literally several tens of satosh. However, the lightning network is still being tested and when this project can be implemented in bitcoin, it is not known.

Your post answers your own question. Let me clarify this by getting the key points from your post:

1. Bitcoin transactions are way slower than other cryptos
2. fees are high
(taken from the first line)

With these points, can you say that Bitcoin is practical for a daily basis currency? It's an obvious no for me.

ETH, LTC, BCH are much more suitable for this practicality.

Not, obviously and never will be. Transaction cost is huge and it's getting worst. It needs upgrade to make it useful for us for our daily use. Cryptocurrencies are source of income for everyone. So no person is dumb enough to spend it for his personal needs. Why would you use cryptocurrency to buy your needs if theres cash. It's fast and low cost. Anyway, LN(lightning network) should be implemented to make faster transactions for Bitcoin and make the transaction fee more cheaper. But still on development.

why not? of course it can and infact we are now already using bitcoin as a daily currency ever since it was begun to boom but we are using it mostly in online and right now they were still slowly implementing the use of it in an offline environments. yet it is still workable and possible to use bitcoin offline due to the fact that some countries now are already using it as a payment method on some malls , restaurants , bars , etc.

transaction cost does only depends ( depends on your wallet , depends on how big or small your transactions , depends on the exchange, depends on the price , etc ) but majority of people are only using bitcoin as an investment and not a payment tool , you must rather use other alternatives such as altcoins for a much reasonable fees.

IMHO, Bitcoin can act as gold or diamond or whatever treasure. It is the base currency. The high fee and long confirmation time are the weak points of it. Moreover, there are too many coins out there is better than it for using as daily currency.

I will not use gold or diamond for daily use.  ;D

In the alternate for the bitcoin there are many coins which are are saying that they can take place of the bitcoin to give more better than what the bitcoin is giving his contribution for the big transaction , but in my opinion digibyte and etherium can do the best as an alternative of the bitcoin .
But still here currently I don't think that we need any optional cryptourrency Because we have many options to lower the fee of the bitcoin transaction, for example we can use segwit wallet address for the transaction to lower the fee and also we can use third party option like to use yobit code at yobit.net exchange free of cost to make transaction .

yes, we admit that this is one of the weaknesses of bitcoin, not just slow, but also expensive fees.

and I think this is the aspect that bitcoin should fix, and to pay for something as small as to buy coffee would be difficult, I never thought about how technical they are to make coffee payment transactions. such as in Canada and in japan.

please explain to me how technical? is it using exchange?

Bitcoin can be possibly use as our currency in daily lives however it will take so much time to check and review how secure it is. Bitcoin must be centralized so that the Government will be the one to take over it and implement some rules and regulatuions for the protection and security of investors or people who are using this crypto currency. As of now, Bitcoin can be used for fund transfer and payment of monthly bills thru online that has no hassle and free of charge. It can be used as mode of payment if we bought some stuff thru online store. Let's just hope and  enjoy the goodness of Bitcoin as of the moment and wait for the perfect timing.

I do agree with you. There's no stable price for bitcoin. If ever it will be the daily currency, then everything that is paid through bitcoin has no stable price also. Tendency would be, people will be confuse on the price. And yes, bitcoin transactions takes too long for it confirm and I don't think that there's someone who is willing to wait to just to confirm it for a coffee or whatever it is.

I do not think that the high fees or the transaction times will be the problem. From all I know the lightning network is capable to solve those problems.
If you want bitcoin to become a currency for daily use it would need to become stable at first.
When people have to pay highly different bitcoin amounts within a small period of time in order to get the same good, I am sure that not many people will do that.
But do we really want a stable bitcoin?
I suppose that Bitcoin will stay what it already is, a very profitable investment.

The slow transaction processing and fees have to be resolved for us to be able to use bitcoin as a currency.  Plus the volatility of the price.  It's a good thought, a cashless transaction but there are a lot of issues that needs to be resolved before that happens.

Essentially i think.. bitcoin will become a daily currency if the governments has supports it.
And i think it would be more appropriate if bitcoin is more used or will be highlighted for more used in transactions in everyday life than other cryptos such as ethereum, due this is the crypto king that was first recognized by many people from different countries, and some countries have validated bitcoin as the currency approved for payments than other cryptos.

Bitcoin transactions are way slower than other cryptos and fees are high, and when you pay with bitcoin you pay with only fractions of it, so do you think it is possible for bitcoin to become a daily currency? Something you can use to pay for coffee? If no, then what cryptocurrency have this potential?

The price of bitcoin is not stable and at the moment it is difficult to imagine that it will be possible to pay for it every day for goods and services. The popularity of crypto currency is growing, but not so fast, although there are cases of selling goods for bitcoin, but there are not so many.

If lightning does what it promises I think Bitcoin can become a daily currency but I also think it should be more stable to be uses by companies. It's extremely difficult to set prices in BTC at the moment. A lot of companies set prices in $ or € and you have to check on a converter how many BTC you should transfer. This is not the most easy way for the non-crypto investor to step in using BTC.

Also the way to get BTC and store them are still not that easy for people who aren't really into Tech and computers. For most of us here it's not really difficult to understand how to store it safely and how to acquire it but try explaining it to your father, mother.

I think everyone on this forum would like to see BTC become a daily currency but we all know how it works. For it to become a common currency people without crypto insight should be getting on board and start seeing the benefits crypto can offer.

I don't think so, for now, because not all country or people have known bitcoin yet, some of them are still wondering whether they were going to accept it, adapt it or use it, for them to make a daily currency like when buying something in the convenient store or in the market like people usually do, there's still need of legality and a confirmation of it before it happen, but like we all know nothing is impossible now with the kind of technologies that we have today, with all these electronics machine, gadget and all that everything can happen.

Its impossible to happen. Bitcoin is designed to become a storage of wealth. If you want to buy coffee then convert your bitcoin into bitcoin - cash. That is the purpose of BCH.

I think I have to agree with you in this one, Bitcoin and its price is becoming more of an investment asset, BCH has more chance to becoming a daily crypto, however I think they should develop something like Litepay or Bitcoin will still be preferred for payments in my opinion.

Now it is difficult to talk about it, as bitcoin has not yet developed to use it daily for small purchases. However, I know that the work on the size of the commission is going on, and quite successful, so in the future it is quite possible that we will be able to buy a cup of coffee for bitcoin without commission.

it is still too early to discuss it, the main vision of bitcoin is to become the world's currency. but after seeing the rejection of various countries against bitcoin, I think it will be very difficult to be realized.
besides bitcoin, can be said not perfect to be the daily currency, regarding transaction costs and delivery confirmation time
time consuming and cost, bitcoin is more suitable for large transactions
such as buying and selling between companies that use large funds

Lightning Network is supposed to make this happen, let us see when LN is fully implemented if tx fees and confirmation time is greatly lessen. We can only hope that tx time and fees will be solved not just for daily tx but also for bitcoin to be always on top.

Thanks to the introduction of Lightning Nerwork, bitcoin lost the problem of long waiting for transactions, but there still remains a high transaction cost compared to, for example, Litecoin. I hope this problem will be solved either, or bitcoin will become an asset for long-term investment, and not for making everyday payments.

How much time ago did you send your last transaction? Many people are constantly saying that Bitcoin transaction fees are too high and it takes a lot of time for them to confirm. These days transactions are quite cheap and it takes around 10 minutes for confirmation. Bitcoin could become used for daily purchases thanks to the Lightning Network which is even faster (like debit cards) and usually cheaper than on-chain transactions.

Currently, bitcoin can not become a crypto currency, which could be used for daily purchases of small value. The reason for this is its low scalability, hanging due to this transaction and high commission fees for conducting these transactions. When these problems are solved, calculations in bitcoin will be carried out very quickly and with a small commission, only then bitcoin can be used for daily purchases, including small value.

it is possible that our daily currency is bitcoin because today is known bitcoin in many countries and they enjoy it in fact there are countries that can pay bitcoin. Bitcoin was originally developed with the hope of eventually eliminating the need for conventional currency and traditional banks. Whilst cryptocurrencies, and in particular Bitcoin, have grown significantly in popularity.

At the present time, it's not yet possible for the bitcoin to become a daily currency. People from all over the world should first be aware that there is this kind of cryptocurrency going on. Not all denizens have heard about bitcoin. Only a minority of the world population has ample knowledge about this virtual currency. I think there is a chance that bitcoin can someday be used as a regular currency to be used everywhere but I guess it would take about a decade from now before it will happen. At that time, everybody will be aware of bitcoin and a more advanced technology will come out to make the bitcoin's transaction a much faster and smoother one.

I think that at this very moment, under the current conditions of bitcoin it would be difficult to think that this could happen in the medium term, however I am convinced that there are still many things that can be done to improve the usability of bitcoin as a currency of daily use, although it may never be efficient for the realization of micropayments, but for larger transfers, such as buying a car, a house or things like that.

Bitcoin was created especially to become a currency that can be used to pay faster and with lower fees but as we can see bitcoin is now used just as an investment to make profit out of it and only a very few people actually use it to buy things online, offline I think no one uses it maybe only 2-3 person's. Thats because there arent a lot of shops where people could spend bitcoins, especially offline. I mean there is no coffee shop's, no fast food shop's, no clothes shop's so people dont have where to spend bitcoin.

It will be difficult for Bitcoin to be the daily currency. Considering the daily need of internet connection to be able to access it. Likewise, the high fees and slow transaction, it would be hard to say that. I think there is no altcoins that can be a potential for daily transaction. Fiat currency would still rule and will always be the easiest way.

Still it cannot replace fiat but, in online shopping maybe at the convinience of your own home and computer with no hurry and no people falling in line after you in the counter. Yes.

While bitcoin is not going to be very fast in its transactions, it will not have low commission fees when they are held, that it can be used with daily purchases, that is, purchases with a small value, can not be said. Therefore, bitcoin urgently needs to eliminate its shortcomings and constantly improve. Otherwise, rapidly developing and improving other crypto-currencies will displace bitcoin as a means of payment.

I think bitcoin will not become a daily currency because of it's volatility and being decentralized. You also consider the use of internet for every transaction together with higher fees. You can use bitcoin as payments for electric bills and loads but not at all. You always need fiat money to buy your needs because it is easy to access transactions and i think cryptocurrency is just usefull for online transaction and it is impossible to be a daily currency.

With the Internet being available to more and more people around the world, anything is possible with cryptocurrencies. Mass adoption is hindered by government regulations as well as technical issues, the latter is much easier to overcome though. Bitcoins is the first cryptocurrency, more or less nowadays its considered a storage of wealth aka "digital gold",  though I am not sure if Bitcoins become the widespread digital currency that everyone will use, but surely in the coming years there will be several digital currencies that will end up being used on a global scale. That cannot be stopped!

How can Bitcoin become daily currency if the transaction can not be canceled? this will lead to massive fraud, because you can not return money for example for a damaged product...

look up multisig...

sorry, this is a fallacious argument. I'm going to take the high road and assume you don't know better. Frankly, and I speak from experience, PayPal is orders of magnitude more dangerous in this respect than Bitcoin.

With a 2 of three multisig, obviously you introduce a third party, but the issue can be arbitrated, adjudicated, and settle very quickly.

As for the issues with 'stability', I think this needs some looking at. It's not bitcoin that's unstable, it's people, and fiat money. Bitcoin's PRICE is unstable, because currently it's used primarily to move money of other sorts, or as an investment vehicle, therefore it's price is subject to massive fluctuation due to very small actual fluctuatons based on 'news', usually otherwise known as fud. Bitcoin itself, however, reliably adds a block approximately every ten minutes, and will continue to do so as long as at least two miners are connected.

It grew too fast this past winter. Anyone in the game long term has seen this before, several times. If, however, it starts being used for small, frequent transactions, as LN will make possible, then its market price is likely to rise slower, and fall slower, as it will be in CONSTANT use and demand. Scaling is the main issue to general adoption, followed by ease of use. Or at least that's my arrogant opinion.

Right now, or even in late December of 2017, Bitcoin is ridiculously undervalued compared to its potential utility. But we need some quick scaling solutions to get it there.

If Joe Public can use bitcoin easily from his Cell phone at Starbucks, he will. This will DRIVE the market, rather than following it. This will cause bitcoin to grow in price and stability. Price first, but the dips will not be as severe, because it WILL BE being used in small transactions with great frequency. This is the key.

As a store of value, it fails. As a speculative investment, it has been one of the best out there for several years, frequently outperforming the general markets by orders of magnitude. But it's a relatively small number of people using and adopting. New blood, recently, has mostly been on news, not on use. Given that the mainstream media gets it right about one out of ten (and I'm being generous, on any subject), this leads to a lot of ill informed people acting out of greed, FOMO, and misinformation. So it shoots up like a rocket.. and drops like one. But if the volume of transactions approached visa's hourly total in a week's time, the growth would be sharp, but not parabolic.

Yes, it can be a daily use currency. And likely will be. If it does not become so, another crypto will. The genie cannot be put back in the bottle, and fiat's days are numbered, sequentially.

I think bitcoin can become a daily currency given that it gets more support from the community now. However, price-wise, we should establish that bitcoins must have a stable price first before being considered a daily currency. People should always consider first the total supply.

Yes, it could be use for daily currency. Bitcoin has the only crypto that accept by some store specially some online shops.  Bitcoin is the only possible now that can be a cryto that used for now because it is the coin that are too longer and also the mother of all crypto.  Ethereum is good also for currency but ethereum cannot fight bitcoin because bitcoin was more popular than ethereum.

It is hard to pay things, foods, clothes, etc. using bitcoin because the price of bitcoin was not consistent and it pumps and dump too easy unlike the fiat that you cannot feel the change.

bitcoin is a digital, virtual currency that uses encryption to facilitate the management and exchange of funds , this sounds comical given its intangible however if we sit and think about it , it makes a lot of sense. the miners are the ones who have invested heavily in equipment that solves mathematical problems to create unique blocks in a chain which are added to the bitcoin ledger . this results in blockchain creation and so you are able to now distinguish the bitcoins as they are unique in order to make transaction legitimate as well as ownership confirmation. if we can get the creation of a bitcoin exchange trading fund then we would be well on our way to creating a daily currency.

Something you can use to pay for coffee? If no, then what cryptocurrency have this potential?

I think bitcoin can become a daily currency given that it gets more support from the community now. However, price-wise, we should establish that bitcoins must have a stable price first before being considered a daily currency. People should always consider first the total supply.
I think an unstable price can still be tolerated by the auto convert technique to fiat so you can avoid losses if the price drops after they send bitcoins to pay, but the main problem is transaction fee on bitcoin, I don't think many people would use bitcoin for daily transactions if the fee for a one-time payment could reach $5. You want to do that mate?

There is always a possibility that it will be use as a daily currency someday. As of now, it is not ideal because of the transaction fee and confirmation time. There are current developments under process like Lightning Network to solve this problem and segwit is already implemented which has lowered the transaction fee. If you can observed in here, many campaigns are asking for segwit address to have a low transaction fee which is one of the solution to counter such problems.

There are already other currencies that has low transaction fee and faster confirmation time but still people are more inclined to use bitcoin than those currencies because it has more volume and most of the exchanges use it as base coin. Some platforms only accept bitcoin in exchange to fiat so bitcoin would still be the must have currency as of now.

I believe that cryptocurrencies have a high potential but things are still in the development mode and hence there might be some inconvenience while using it. As of now, high transaction fees and confirmation time is the issue that we are facing when it comes to the Bitcoin's utility value. However, I am sure that developments like lightning network would bring some solutions to improve the utility value of Bitcoin, especially in the daily life.

Yes it can be possible to bitcoin to become our daily currency. Imagine the system without cashiers at stores. Balance will automaticall deducted to your bitcoin account. But now, there are more factors to consider if bitcoin will replace our traditional system of payment.  transactions in btc is expensive and need days to confirm to complete a transaction. Security also plays a big part if we want want bitcoin to our daily currency.

I think its possible to use in paying your bills in restaurant and malls, if all the person know about bitcoin and all the business man in our country and they know the good about bitcoin then its possible to become our daily currency. I think in the future it will happen, but our own currency will not disappear, because bitcoin is changing its price, so im saying that its possible that bitcoin can use to pay bills :)

Not in the way you are suggesting as the transaction times and fees make it completely impractical for small purchases. It can work if you have a crypto Debit card however you store your BTC on the wallet then you spend on the card when you feel the need for anything from a coffee to groceries to gas station fillup for the car. All with no fees or tx charges.

If that is the case, then higher transaction fees and long confirmation times reduce the incentive for participants to move money, leading to more hodling, theoretically reducing the supply and increasing the price.

Sure one day it will be,but it needs time to adapt to the system because still many people are don't know about the crypto currency.Yes the fee maybe high before but now the fee is very less like fractions of dollar and then it gets confirmed in minuted since there is no traffic in the blockchain. But soon the lightning network gonna implemented into the bitcoin then there will be no issue with fee and confirmation time. But we need to start using it in our day to day life then slowly more people will adapt to it.

That is my local fiat were present to be a legal and popular tender on each country.
if the world agrees not to use fiat as a means of transactions, and they agree to use bitcoin as a means of payment, so all transactions use crypto, I think to buy something has small value roadside food is something that might happen.

I don't think so and it would even not be like a daily currency in the coming years.

Bitcoin has now become more of an investment options and in coming years it would be more like an asset. We have completely forget the sole purpose of Bitcoin (which was to make transactions easy and eliminate third-party involvement), now Bitcoins are only being used to make quick money and it would remain this way.

think it depends on how you define replace.

Will digital currencies supersede traditional fiat currencies as the prominent medium of exchange in the world. Yes, I think that is likely.

How this happens could take many paths. With Bitcoin being more or less prominent depending on which path is taken.

Let me explain.

I think it is unlikely that all existing currencies are replaced exclusively by Bitcoin. As this would be unprecedented. One worldwide medium of exchange.

Even today. Digital currency enthusiasts who value privacy have begun using Monero, Zcash, Dash over Bitcoin. Because of their specific feature sets adding additional layers of privacy when transacting in these coins versus Bitcoin.

Niche use cases like these always exist. So I would expect multiple digital currencies to exist in whatever end state is arrived at. Versus all of them being subsumed by Bitcoin

Although it could be substantially fewer than exist today as the market evolves.

And existing Fiat currencies are increasingly digital as well. With some forward looking Central Banks working towards incorporating blockchain technology into their issuance and management processes.

As these experiments prove successful. Blockchain technology should be incorporated into the issuance and management of all currencies.

Fiat or digital. Because of the advantages it provides.

Once currencies are blockchain based. Transacting between them will be much more seamless than it is currently.

So I would expect digital currencies to take an increasing share of currency holdings/transactions from traditional fiat currency as more users discover there usefulness.

I would not expect traditional fiat currencies to completely disappear. Unless they are unwilling/unable to adapt to more seamless interaction with digital ones.

As there should continue to be many instances where using government issued fiat currencies for transactions makes sense. Especially if competition from the digital realm improves the way they are managed.

Think smart contracts, decentralized exchange,

Currently, No. Bitcoin cannot become a daily currency mainly because of the high transaction fees. Lets say you were to buy a drink that costs 5$ in some cases you'd end up paying twice as much just for the transaction fee. However this doesn't mean bitcoin won't ever have the potential to become a daily currency. I believe it will be ready with the release of the lightning network that would lower the fees significantly. Then it would have to wait for more adoption, and maybe after a few years become a daily currency in certain countries. Hope for the best.

This may all seem a bit unreal and intangible, but it actually  makes perfect sense. The Bitcoin network is built up of miners, who are invested in keeping the currency secure and stable as they are paid in bitcoins and act as approvers of the blockchains through their activity. Like any online and computerized business, it can be subject to hacking and theft, just as your bank can.

Bitcoin transactions are a bit too much to use in transactions. There are always transaction fees when you pass or give Bitcoin into other wallets. It can become a daily currency but only if the fees are lowered or maybe eradicate the whole transaction fees and just use Bitcoin as a mode of payment for everyday use.

If we answer this question from the positions of today's trends, the answer suggests an unambiguous one - it can not. But bitcoin has his own fans who will not hesitate to resent such uncompromising skepticism. In addition, short answers are always introduced into a stupor, and you want to continue the conversation. One needs explanations, another proof, somebody hopes - but suddenly there is a chance? They really want to be reassured - of course, there are!

You have given an answer on your question. To use Bitcoin as a daily currency, we need to make a huge amount of transactions, therefore those transaction would be outside of the blockchain of Bitcoin. Now the developers are deploying a new technology The Lightning Network which make possible to create between users a channels ensured by bitcoins.

If you are asking about another crypto currency which has a potential in this field, I can advise Dash. The instant transactions of Dash are pretty fast and safe.

I'd like to point something out here that is not being noted by y'all. Speed of ACTUAL settlement. In bitcoin, it's settled, realisitically, in three blocks. That's on average a half hour.

The 'fast' transaction speed of fiat is an illusion. Actual settlement, depending on the banking entities involved, is between 24 hours and seven business days. They give you a 'credit' almost instantly, but that's what it is: Credit. IT CAN BE REVERSED.

Bitcoin solves this. When the transaction becomes confirmed, it's DONE. No takebacks, no bullshit.

Even with LN, this remains true, as each transaction in the side chain (payment channel) becomes permanent once confirmed, and doubly so once the channel is confirmed on the blockchain.

The problem to daily adoption is not speed or fees, it's ease of use. With a credit system on top of it, such as LN or even a totally off chain solution like VISA, that problem goes away.

Remember, it took 24 years and the biggest single theft of hard money in history to make the Fiat US Dollar have any kind of efficacy. BTC has gone more than halfway in less than half that time, and it doesn't require the massive theft of a population's wealth to make it happen. Just some incremental improvements in software, and a lot of adverstising.

Yes, it can be, and MUST BE a daily currency. If it fails to do so, then it fails completely. The sheer amount of resources invested in it militates towards it becoming a daily currency.

Isn't quite possible if there is no other options just like of using fiat. But then, since fiat currency are still widely used, it can't be push to used this 3rd world currency generation as we considered of having high fees in all transaction. With the current high fee, bitcoin is better suited to be a digital asset invested for a long period of time. Whereas if you want to use crypto for daily finance I prefer to use altcoin like ethereum (ETH) and bitcoin cash (BCH) whose transaction cost is much lower than bitcoin. But, if you still want to use bitcoin as daily money it could be but the risk of loss is borne by each.

no, because the cost of crypto currency is not dictated by the authorities. You are not forced to accept crypto currency forcibly and only in it to make certain payments, as it happens with government money. The cost of crypto currency is determined only by the ratio of demand and supply in the market. Free market economy.

Bitcoin transactions are way slower than other cryptos and fees are high, and when you pay with bitcoin you pay with only fractions of it, so do you think it is possible for bitcoin to become a daily currency? Something you can use to pay for coffee? If no, then what cryptocurrency have this potential?

This will take a lot of time to happen. A lot of improvements also need to be done like there should be instant transfer.

When Satoshi Nakamoto invented Bitcoin in 2009, he was hoping that it will become a daily currency. Unfortunately, he dropped out of the development team in 2010, and the remaining core developers were not interested in retaining Bitcoin as a currency for daily usage.

This may all appear somewhat stunning and impalpable, yet it really bodes well. The Bitcoin arrange is developed of mineworkers, who are put resources into keeping the cash secure and steady as they are paid in bitcoins and go about as endorses of the blockchains through their action. Like any on the web and automated business, it can be liable to hacking and burglary, similarly as your bank can.

Bitcoin will become the main currency very soon - the problem is that it is quite speculative. His course is influenced by the following factors: public opinion (very sensitive to panic and rumors), cyber attacks, speculation of major players, geopolitical and financial crises (crisis of 2015 in Greece, Brexit for example), global cataclysms. The popularity of the crypto currency will grow with the increase in instability in the world, and Bitcoin will live as long as the Internet continues to live!

Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin are very unpredictable. "UBS", an investment bank said that it is "highly doubtful" that these will ever become conventional currencies. "The need for companies and individuals to pay tax receipts in government-issued currency, and the potentially unlimited crypto-money supply, pose significant barriers to widespread adoption".
Volatility strips bitcoin of the characteristics needed of a credible substitute currency, making it instead a speculative asset, a get-rich quick scheme.

It's likely right now for Bitcoin to become a daily currency because of high fees and long confirmation time. Also because many people consider Bitcoin more an asset and speculative tool rather than a currency.
Over time, globally accessible internet presence and cases of collapse of coins and paper currencies in various countries (such as cyprus, venezuela, greece, zimbabwe, argentina and others), make more and more people want a better system of buying and selling and more modern than the previous banknotes.  :-\
and i think bitcoin is the solution.

thats true I think we still need to use fiat or paper money. My point of view does not matter using bitcoins for transactions like buying electronics or something. but to use bitcoin on a daily basis. such as buying food and drink, where the frequency of transactions very often it is done of course it includes waste due to expensive transaction fees?

Bitcoin can not be a reserve currency because there is no bond market with Bitcoin ... Gold is the only currency that can compete to become a reserve currency. Bitcoin is an electronic currency and no matter how good the Blockchain technology, it is still hacked. The principle is simple ... any locks, no matter where good security, will be opened. The only problem is time. It just does not open when it's not the key.

You mean if Bitcoin and other digital currencies can replace fiat? because paying your coffee using Bitcoin is going to be expensive due to mining charge and transaction flat fees. I believed bitcoin cannot be replace fiat because not all people know how to use bitcoin and fiat or the local paper money is much convenient to use that even the children knows how to use it instantly.

That is not the main reason. In a few countries (such as Switzerland and Japan), Bitcoin is accepted as a form of legal tender. So you can't say that it is not recognized by all the governments as currency. The main issue is the high transaction fee and delay.

Bitcoin cannot become a daily life currency even if the fees and transaction time has gone down as it is now. For da to day life use fiat money is the best currency to use, the high value of bitcoin its volatility won't support bitcoin to be a daily life currency. Bitcoin isn't actually a currency it is more of like an asset, an asset which is very highly priced in the market so using it daily wouldn't be a smart move.

Bitcoin is a payment medium that is indeed a penomenal now, currently Bitcoin has begun to apply in various financial sectors that exist in some large companies. So it is possible if one day Bitcoin can become a currency that is used globally. I see the ever-increasing volume of Bitcoin transactions has made Bitcoin a commodity that has attracted a lot of people. People have started to abandon the real currency and they have begun applying the digtial currency in their lives.

For me transaction fee is not a problem because the most important is the speed and ease in doing transactions wherever and whenever we want.

Coins with such high volatility can never be used for daily transaction. It will be very difficult, because the world is going to run over the fiats, so its tough to maintain the exchange rate with so volatility.
I think country specific coins will be implemente in long future, so then its still possible.

Also  Bitcoin with high confirmation time, its tough to implement it everywhere. But there are new coins and even ICO whoch is targeting daily use.

It turns out the list is pretty boring: bedroom sheets, headphones, area rugs, mattresses, coffee tables, sunglasses, and donations to non-profits all help round out the top ten items bought on Overstock.com. With the cryptocurrency becoming more ubiquitous as shown by reaching the 100k daily transaction mark (not including popular addresses) this year, it is being used more and more for regular ecommerce purchases.

It's likely right now for Bitcoin to become a daily currency because of high fees and long confirmation time. Also because many people consider Bitcoin more an asset and speculative tool rather than a currency.

That's right. I think that its becoming more problematic that transactions involving cryptocurrencies are beginning to be imposed of high fees and longer confirmation times. More than a currency, it is turning more so as an investment medium comparable to a 'stock' in the stock market. So, to consider it as a daily currency would not be feasible now because of the "red tape" tied up with its transactions, unlike credit cards that are fast and easy with just one swipe, so for cryptocurrency to be in that stage, it should find a way to make transactions faster and convenient.

Currently, bitcoin is far from becoming an everyday currency. There are lots of things to consider if you want bitcoin to be used in day to day transactions. First thing is volatility. You cant use a coin that has a value of $100 today and tomorrow it becomes $90 only or worse $50. That's not good for the business owners. Secondly, bitcoin fees are just huge. You buy $10 worth of food and your fees for the transaction is more than $10. So instead of putting out $10 you put out $25 for a $10 worth of food. That's not at all practical.

Some retail shops and restaurants might not be willing to accept bitcoin due to one reason, the huge price volatility in bitcoin might cause some retail shops or restaurant to get into debts as the boss would have to pay the staff salary, rental and utilities expenses monthly at a fixed rate, and collecting bitcoin as payment from their customers would risk them having to deal with bitcoin price fluctuation.

Yes, bitcoin can become a daily currency if one create a digital wallet and then can swipe over our phone or maybe even a card. This will create easiness to the billing system.

With the existing fees, in a few transactions you have spent more than you use conventional transactions, and many transactions are queuing for verification and business enthusiasts must wait for their money. It can, but if nothing better than conventional, then why using cryptocurrency?

It is possible but to be perfectly honest I don't think it is going to happen in the near future. We all know that Bitcoin is made as a digital currency and not for daily usage, it is here not to replace fiat but who knows, what will happen, We just need to consider the transaction fees and confirmation time, plus the fact that not all establishments are accepting Bitcoin and the government, I don't think they would like the idea, they are already unfriendly to Bitcoin now what more if it will be used as a daily currency, I am sure they will do anything and everything on its power to shut it down. For me it is better for Bitcoin to stay as a digital currency, that way it can still fulfill its purpose without killing fiat that can lead to nothing but chaos.

I think transaction volumes need to go up significantly before crypto prices can go up. My guess is crypto has the rest of 2018 to get trans volumes up. My other point is the current way that mining works is not sustainable. I have advocated a controlled mining model where say six large miners only are used and paid the same amount to provide the service.

Yes, no one has the clear picture about the future of bitcoin. It is all about the support it gains with time period. As the  technology is a must for the development we have got increased chances for the adoption of bitcoin in a much larger scale. If this happens we can see bitcoin getting used same as daily currency.

Yes.  I do believe that bitcoin can became a daily form of currency because bitcoin has gained a huge amount of popularity and has gained a huge amount of users throughout the globe since it had started and its popularity and demand in people are increasing day by day since then. It is also evident from the increasing prices of bitcoin   Intact bitcoin has defeated gold in the terms of price. Which signifies that bitcoin’s demand is very high. So bitcoin can be a regular daily currency as it has very high potential.

In order that bitcoin could become a means of payment for making daily purchases, a number of conditions are needed. First of all. bitcoin should have all the functionality for this, that is, have a high transaction rate that would allow you to instantly transfer certain small and large amounts, and have very low transaction fees. This bitcoin does not yet have. Bitcoin must have the development of an infrastructure for servicing, that is, it should be possible to directly pay directly at any retail outlet and service sector. This is also not yet available. Well, there should be a clear legal basis for the passage of bitcoin in each country as a means of payment. This issue is also far from normal use. Proceeding from this, there is still no possibility to use bitcoin for daily purchases.

Plus the fact that the government will never allow that Bitcoin would be a daily currency because of its decentralized nature. Bitcoin can co exist with fiat but never replace it.

It is still too early to call the digital crypto currency currency, money.
Although bitcoin and other crypto currencies are already being used for commercial transactions, they are still far from being money: money is an accepted medium of exchange.
However, from the point of view of the theory of monetary circulation, there is no basis for asserting that bitcoin and other crypto-currencies can not rise to the level of money as a generally accepted means of exchange.

That will not happen. Although its value is very high, it still can not meet the needs of cash. Bitcoin is simply an electronic money and we can not expect too much of it. I think Bitcoin can become a daily currency. It is a possibility and in fact some people are already using it. But then again, it needs--badly needs--to add a lot of developments to their coin for it to really prosper as a daily currency. Confirmation is slow, transaction fees are high; these two alone are enough for Bitcoin not to be used as a daily currency. Bitcoin for coffee? I think it is not a good idea. Well, as an alternative, we have Litecoin. Although when it comes to confirmation time, we really have to have some waiting time. Fiat is better when it comes to this. If you are done with your coffee, you can just leave a bill under your saucer and you are good to go. Instant is all we need!

I do not think so. I think bitcoin is just a market for us to invest in to get a profit and it will probably end up whenever. I do not see any market flourishing forever.

It can but as to its current state, I do not think it is even feasible at the moment. It is because there are lots of legitimate issues with Bitcoin since its onset that it had failed to address up to the present. What makes the situation worse is the fact that governments across borders deliberately or unconsciously fail to act on the matter, hence, Bitcoin's legal existence is still on a hang which makes investors and other prospective investors to not totally stand with it. I think therefore that before it can even be considered as a daily currency, it has to have some color of legitimacy in terms of its existence and some level of stability. Otherwise stated, it has to be somehow regulated so that the value does not decline or balloon so abruptly causing too much stress on the market itself.

I don't think bitcoin is a daily currency. It has many shortcomings that limit it. First of all, it trades very slowly, its transaction costs are very high, and its transactions require the Internet to be completed, which limits it to become a daily currency.

Definitely, well it's been a while since bitcoin was started. Many people around here in cyberworld know about bitcoin and most of them ignored what bitcoin is really all about. I would say as of this time its impossible to become daily currency since many are still didn know what bitcoin is really all about. How will the value of bitcoin be attractive to them since they will be paying the item the same amount as fiat? And if you think of it, Bitcoin is not really stable so you are having a risk in terms of either holding it or selling it quickly. And if you are planning to sell them, you can deduct the fees from sending it giving you more ways of losing your profit.

Of course it can! Given that it could achieve or recieve updates for the following:

1. Outrageous transaction fees
2. Sluggish transfer rate

Aside from these 2, I think we could have bitcoins as a daily currency once we find a way to balance out the supply and return lost bitcoins back into the circulation.

The regression theorem explains the emergence of money by a natural exchange economy in which there is still no money. However, the appearance of bitcoins occurred even with a functioning monetary economy. From this point of view, we can say that when the first market price of bitcoins was created, the purchasing power of existing US or euro money was transferred to it. Thus, the theory of regression has been largely confirmed.

Maybe in future we can see it as a daily currency but now it is not possible because it cannot be used everywhere as it requires an internet connection and it needs to be converted into some sort of physical money. Moreover in many countries it is still not legal. It is decentralized in nature due to which it is not under the control of government. So I don't think that government will allow such kind of currency over which they have no control to be used on regular basis. Moreover it is impossible for Bitcoin to gain the amount of trust fiat money has.It can be used as a means of transaction but not as a daily currency.

just imagine if bitcoin is used in everyday life, for example when you queue to pay tolls, imagine the congestion on the highway is happening, because too long wait for payment confirmation time. Cheesy Cheesy Cheesyitu will create the "worst" jam. throughout history

I think bitcoin will be very difficult in daily trading. Bitcoin currencies will be very good for large value transactions, but it will be very difficult for small transactions. Because bitcoin trading is slower, it takes more time with these types of passwords and higher fees. It will be very troublesome and take a long time when shopping for small value products. So I think bitcoin will not become a daily currency.

It will be a daily currency till:

1) We do something about the transaction fees. Consider paying $2 as coffee price and then 1$ as additional transaction fee. Very impractical.

2) We make the bitcoins transfers instant. Consider sitting at the coffee shop for extra 10-15 minutes till the transaction is confirmed.

In addition, the price of bitcoin may increase, spending it every day is a waste, I do not think people would like it to become a daily currency, they will be hurt in the future, so if we need money, we can borrow or convert a small amount of bitcoin into cash, this will be more suitable

It is not yet the time if you are pertaining on a daily basis. For it to be use for daily basis it should be at a stable rate value wise and accessibility should be widen enough so that all levels of society could use the system which is not yet feasible at the moment. It is hard to use Bitcoin as a daily currency like using fiat currencies, for paying for coffee and so on, because it have high fee and also slow transactions. Sometimes you need waiting several hours or days until you get the first confirmation, and this feature is not going to help making fast daily deals. And fees would only affect you too much if you were transacting very small amounts of money, which is not much likely nowadays. Bitcoin has the potential to become a daily world currency, due to its speed, ease of use, and most importantly, its loyal community, which is basically the backbone that holds a crypto together.

Bitcoin doesn't need to be an everyday currency, but rather serve as the store of value in the representative form of digital gold. If that is the case, then higher transaction fees and long confirmation times reduce the incentive for participants to move money, leading to more holdling, theoretically reducing the supply and increasing the price. Other currencies can then serve as the decentralized payment method.

Well i think what's keeping btc from being considered as a currency is it's volatility more than it's acceptance. You can't have a currency that changes value that quickly since it's going to be very unstable.

I think Bitcoin becomes a daily currency. Because Bitcoin is high in fees and it's long confirmation time and market demand more.
Gradually it is getting legitimized nationwide and popularity and rising.
It is a valuable digital cryptocurrency which is easily transferable. Bitcoin has cleared the human need. The rate at which humans are using it seems to be a daily coin.

If problems with the slowness of transactions and the high cost of commission fees will be solved, bitcoin may well become a crypto currency for everyday purchases. Although a few months ago this was a very big problem for bitcoin, recently the situation has improved a lot. Transaction fees have become small and this is already noted by many. If bitcoin will improve in this direction, it is quite possible.

Maybe in the future bitcoin is a regular daily currency but on this time it is just an online digital currency and used only by bitcoin holders, because not all people are know and using this, they are only using fiat for their daily expenses.
