Title: This is everything Bitcoin should not, and cannot be.
Post by: TKE406 on July 19, 2011, 01:47:36 AM
I recently saw a tweet referring to http://www.freebitcoins.org/ (http://www.freebitcoins.org/)

I read through and was immediately thinking how bad this is for Bitcoin, and Bitcoin's image.
One of those "Get your friends to sign up and you get 20% of what they get!"
This really DOES make Bitcoin look like a pyramid scheme, but I know it's not.
"Sign up and start earning FREE bitcoins!"

I don't like this at all.

If you are the owner of freebitcoins.org, please tell us your side of the story.

While sleezy, I don't think it's a big deal. These types of sites are common... try out offers from vendors and earn rewards. As Bitcoin becomes successful, a million similar services will bloom... they're like the mushroom fungus of the healthy forest ecosystem  ;D

I'm also not a fan of any 'business' that is actually using the words 'pyramid' in the promotional materials, whether they really are or not. I don't find it cute, funny, or very helpful for bitcoin at large - since a lot of criticism is leveled at the system based on the assumption that it is a multi-level intake scam.

If you run one of these, you are at best an idiot - at worst, undermining bitcoin and it's potential future with a simplistic money-grabbing scheme.

Since when did the internet have a shortage of idiots? Which is why we'll see more of these sites AND why those sites will have "customers" to be victims.

Why don't you do something about it?

Whining about something you can't change is a waste of forum attention.

Sadly, their page design is more polished than many (legitimate) Bitcoin sites I've encountered.

Bitcoin is going to be used in scams just like standard currency is.  There's no real way to prevent that other than encouraging people to evaluate opportunities on their merits and to not assume that something is legitimate just because it uses Bitcoin.

Doesn't have to be a scam at all!

Let's say you complete an offer that nets the site $1.00.  They give you $0.50 worth of bitcoins and $0.10 (20%) worth of bitcoins to the person that referred you.  The site keeps $0.40.

There are thousands of offers like this:  http://www.cj.com/

Like Jafm said, I really don't see how this is a scam.

This is just a common GPT site with a Bitcoin twist. These sites are very common, and definitely not scams. They are just not worth your time, take forever, steal all your personal information, and generally suck.

This is an ideal use of bitcoin. It allows for a very low barrier to entry for workers (in this case, survey takers), since they can get paid without providing bank account details.
