Title: To Move Wallets one device to the other
Post by: worldtraveller321 on February 24, 2018, 12:22:57 AM
Just a question. when the time comes to change to get a new mobile or desktop computer.
I have wallets on both my Desktop such as Exodus and a few wallet Apps like Coinomi
yes I do have my private keys and password stored safely and on paper.

what would I do to transfer wallets? are wallets easy to transfer say one mobile to another? just on new phone get the same app and password and private key let me access my funds? or do I have to get more complicated then that?
this is one thing I am worried at moment, not in need to get a new phone yet or computer, but need to know.

feedback on this is important
thanks

If you are using wallets which provide "seed mnemonics" (aka wallet words, 12 word phrase, seed phrase, seed words etc)... Then it really is as simple as reloading the application on the new device, select "restore from backup", enter the seed mnemonic and it will restore all your addresses, transaction history and coins.

Most recent "HD" wallets use this method of backup/restore.

However, some HD wallets (most notably Bitcoin Core), require that you make a backup of the wallet file itself, transfer that to new device and then load the backup file.

As far as I'm aware, both the wallets you have mentioned (Exodus and Coinomi) utilise the "seed mnemonic" backup system.

The most easy way would be to export all private keys and import them again to the new devic(es).

This only works if all the private keys are in the same format, example WIF.

Just send the funds to the other devices' wallets. 1 satoshi / byte won't hurt that much.

The most easy way would be to export all private keys and import them again to the new devic(es).

This only works if all the private keys are in the same format, example WIF.
That's the more complicated way than restoring the seed phrase or reinstalling the app (import wallet.dat/wallet file).
Imagine if he got more than 30 addresses with funds in that wallet.
