Title: What you do for security?
Post by: FutureICOs on February 24, 2018, 04:36:42 PM
I think this question is something that should be in the mind of many, at least those who got over 1k Crypto Assets. As it is not RARE to see people losing their funds through hacking or all that stuff, it is becoming a lot common. So what measurements do you take to secure yourself (your funds)?

I have recently found this https://www.bitfreezer.us/, it is Hardware wallet as many might figure out. I have around 5-6k Crypto assets (depending on up/down value), so I believe it is not BAD to have this.

I have 2 questions. First is what I asked right at the start, it is what do you guys do for security? Then is this a good option to take? As I haven’t made an order yet, but will be going ahead on Monday. So let me hear your views. Thank you

I use antivirus software to protect my computer, but I am still being careful because there are new tricks coming out from the scammers/hackers everyday.

As for wallet, I keep majority of my coins in Ledger and trezor hardware wallet.

Never heard of BitFreezer so I can't comment on them. But I would always recommend getting a Nano by Ledger.

Furthermore be anonymous. Use different passwords for every service (as one should do). Always use 2-Factor-Authentification. Change your passwords frequently and never for the love of god give away your private key.

The most basic tool to ensure your safety is your attentiveness, if you do not hurry anywhere and will be very careful approach to the case, then the possibility of hacking you will be less. So just be more careful and everything will be fine.

I dont recommend using any uknown hardwallets it is better to use what most of the people are using so you wont lose anything and you are confident that your hardwallet cannot be compromised,i am using both ledger and trezor for about a year and a half ,i really dont encounter any problems using it,these two are the most secured wallet to date, and you should get one also for your protection.

Install anti virus and malwarebytes so you computer wont be infected by these malwares and viruses, the hardwallet that you mentioned is from uknown developer so i wont recommend to use it ,instead of that you can use ledger nano s because even your computer has viruses and malwares you private keys wont be stolen by these hackers, that is why it is recommended to have a hardwallet.

Here's a quick rundown:

1) Do not use Windows for anything crypto
2) Use Linux for anything crypto (any user friendly distribution would do if you are new to Linux)
3) Do not expose your private keys to the internet ever, so either have a hardware wallet, or better yet, a laptop with no wifi card or anything that could connect to the internet
4) Do not give your personal information to exchanges, they are all potential scams that will disappear eventually. I have a lot of experience with exchanges disappearing out of nowhere. Luckily they didn't had my info.
5) Do not store your coins in exchanges, obviously
6) Consider any other coin buy Bitcoin a potential scam

That would be it.

How much Crypto assets you have? I think it is fine if the amount is below 1k, but above it, I believe you got to look at these options. It is easy to say I have NEVER used it, so I will just NEVER use it. You got to change with the time, as that’s how you get in the BETTER zone.

Security on huge assets or investments is important. Hacking can be done easily if your computer can be manipulated or viewed from a remote location using viruses and or malware. Using hardware wallet can be a very good option for security purposes. I would suggest you should use that.

Already trezor and ledger nano has been widely used by many people who is on cryptos. I do not think this wallet will be goes viral there both wallet. If we are worry that our wallet should not be hacked. Keep your funds on private key secured desktop wallet that is enough i think.
Don't prefer to save your fund on online wallet. If you have wallet details on public system where others can access except you. Keep it on private place.

Wow lot's of people are far more security conscious then I am.  I understand hackers/malware gets better day in and day out but if you keep of sketchy websites. Run things like spybot search and destroy.  I am at least comfortable with desktop wallets, Mew wallet, and even some exchanges like Binance or Kucoin for a bit of money (couple thousand).

I understand that the advice given by one gentleman above is likely the best practices but you have to be realistic with yourself.  Most of us aren't willing to go thru that level of due diligence.  Just gotta make it hard enough that it isn't worth the hackers time imo.

Ledger and trezor is more than enough to protect your  money. Because both are hardware wallet so no one should hack your wallet. But you should careful your private keys this is more important in all the wallet. All the digital currencies are only 90% of secured other 10% percent is our responsible.

And also use Google Auth if the website provide it.

First you will need to install some good anti virus for your computer or laptop, add some malwarebytes to be sure that no malwares will be installed in your computer.Use ledger nano s or trezor they are the most commonly used hardwallets (most trusted) by the community, third use metamask extension in your browser syo it can prevent phishing sites from stealing your private keys when you are transacting in cryptocurreny exchanges.

What’s the cost of that? Also, can you list down some of the features? And finally what is your take on BitFreezer? I also like you to compare it and then let me better.

The most common hacks over crypto are with malwares, so first thing I did is I moved from Windows to Linux, as there are pretty less  chances of getting infected with malware on Linux as in compared to windows.
Second, most of my tokens I keep in my Ledger Nano S.
If I am trading on decentralized ETH exchanges like etherdelta, I make sure I use Metamask.

these are good practices to safeguard yourself.

My friend uses a bitfreezer purse.  He says that it is convenient and safe.  BitFreezer is built on the basis of Tails and because access to bitcoin runs from the boot operating system that is located directly on BitFreezer you do not have to worry about whether your operating system is infected with viruses.

Use an offline wallet or ledger, that's basically it. You don't have to give yourself too much headache when the solution is simple, and you end up not risking anything in other system that you do not have control.

Second is stay clean, do not go to malicious websites. Clicking on some ads/links can get you phised and hacked.
Install a good firewall/antivirus or malware/rootkit protection.

And don't give you private keys/address to anyone, also your personal info on public/social media.

I think Ledger is something that MOST are fairly well aware of it, but I have NEVER used it and I like to know the cost and how it works. This BItFreezer is $49, so looks fine to me. I don’t exactly have a burning desire to have this but I feel if $50 can give me security for my 5k amount, then it should be worth going for.

To be honest I have not yet decided which is the most convenient option to reduce the risks in my crypto assets, because although it is true that I have already suffered the theft of a small portion of my investments, the only "security" measure that I am using so far is to spread my investments in endless wallets and addresses. I think that at this moment I have about 50 different wallets, so that in case of suffering a hack, the most I would lose would be about $200.

It is true that it is very problematic to manage so many addresses and private keys, but it is a provisional measure while my assets are not so significant at this moment.

That was my point, if anyone having over 1k investment, then I won’t mind giving away 4-5% IF it can secure me completely, but obviously, IF I have funds below that, then I will not bother. Right now, this think BitFreezer is $49 and my amount is around 5k, so I believe it is absolutely worth it.

Always be careful to where you send your money. Double check or triple check is a must.
Cold wallets is also a good investment.
Never ever let your funds stay in a trading website for a long time. If you want to trade then just send in the amount that you can afford to lose.
Dont trust website wallets. Anytime there will be something wrong that could happen. If you want to withdraw to cash then just send also the amount you want to withdraw.
Never share your private keys with anyone except your wife. ;D

First of all, l would like to check my accout. Then, l will lock my handphone. Besides, l will download antivirus to protect my handphone. In the main time, we must keep our password with carefully. Because it is very important to open our account. So, I think this my opinion about to do for security. Thank you

Honestly speaking, if your amount if higher then there is just no way you will be relaxed or careless UNLESS it is very tiny amount of your total wealth. But for a normal person, it will be next to impossible to really not worry, at least I can’t stop myself from worrying.

I will admit, I haven’t previously used ANY hardware wallet or even thought about it, I have all other security measurements and even my details aren’t in the system I use, it’s in my laptop that I don’t have internet active on (wifi disabled), so I am fairly secure, but then this thing I am talking about BitFreezer is around 50 bucks, so surely not that much?

I too plan to use it, as I believe it is very cheap as compared to other major names while it provides similar stuff. Often the problem is that NAME is what makes you money, so no one believes in trying anything else even if it is the same thing in terms of security. But I am looking to hear about the price of other hardware wallets and then make a comparison.

Very true and spot on with the suggestion. Just a few days back, I had no clue how the Hardware wallet works, but now I am getting to know plenty about it. Still waiting for someone to tell me what the COST of LEDGER is. Please tell me SOMEONE! This BitFreezer is $49, so need to make a comparison.

There are certain things that are your personal decision and this one is just that. However, I am just not sure how you will be comfortable doing this. I will definitely not suggest or even think about doing such stuff.

You might not lose too much though hacking, but this way is equally dangerous in putting you on BIGGER trouble. I will certainly prefer hardware wallet then doing this.

Is it $229? As I just checked their website, I feel that is bit too expensive for my liking. This BitFreezer is $49 and has SAME features as Ledger got, so can someone EXPLAIN why I should be going for Ledger and not BitFreezer? Although, it is obvious that name often speaks, but still some logical reason?

For security issues is number one because it's all about our important assets, what I've done so far about security is obvious by installing a premium antivirus that aims so no malware will attack my device, then always bookmark all the web we normally visit and of course do not arbitrarily open the site or download files that are not important.
And for wallet like MEW at this time I still feel comfortable using Metamask service and all this time my assets are still safe and hopefully will remain safe.

Hardware wallets can do the trick as your Crypto Assets will be safe and secure.
For me, I don't really have no issue even if I didn't own hardware wallets to secure my Crypto Assets but I just simple have a MEW wallet with digital keys but I do never save them in my computer nor on my cloud storages.
I do put them on the paper and keep it on the most secure place that only me knows.

Intsall metamask extension because it will protect your browser from these phishing sites,i am using it for about a year without any problem.Use hardwallets like trezor and ledger to be sure that your bitcoins and altcoins would be protected from the malwares and viruses in your computer, these hardwallets has an extra protection because the private keys are built in with the device, theres also a recovery seed where if you loss your wallet you could easily recover it using the seed.

I do put them on the paper and keep it on the most secure place that only me knows.

But what IF you lose out that PAPER? Anyway, I think for big investors or people with a bigger amount in their wallet, they will absolutely prefer Hardware wallets, as that is an obvious option. But definitely not if we are having below 1k worth Cryptos.

Using hardware wallets like Ledger Nano will solve security problems in the future. Use these wallets. Also, do not click on links to your e-mail, telegram and skype addresses.

Just use a hardwallet so you can be sure that your bitcoins and precious altcoins are protected, install some anti virus so you would eliminate those malwares in your computer, install metamask extension so your private keys would be encrypted whenever you are trading with some dex or decentralized exchanges like etherdelta,if you have done all of these i can assure you there will be no problem.

This thread is full of good security advices but I like your advices the most. I never considered exchanges as unsecure, but now I think about it and am really scared for my coins :-\

Intall antivirus and malwarebytes, keep your private keys in a cold storage, use metamask extension to protect your private keys whenver you are using exchanges like etherdelta, use hardwallets like ledger and trezor which is the most trusted hardwallets today,if you can do all of these things im sure there will be no chance that these hackers will get your keys.

I just keep my assets on myetherwallet and I have not encountered any hack or stealing event on my wallet. I just keep my private key away from my other details that I used to copy paste when filling up bounty forms.

I have installed anti viruses and malwarebytes for my computer's protection,i am also using hardware wallets ledger and trezor to be specific because these hardwallets could prevent these hackers to steal our private keys using malwares and viruses, plus the hardwallets has recovery feature for example your hardwallet is lost or misplaced you can easily use the recovery seed in your new hardwallet, always protect your private keys and do not put it in your computer.

Be careful who do you talk  even though your relatives or friends don't talk any confidential things specially in btc, as we knows this a money matters all mostly are sensitive a lot of hackers are watching you always.I'm already a victim that's why I want to share to you even your relatives don't give your full trust to them otherwise they will hit you at back.

Do not install applications in your computer, make it simple and plain less applications less chance of getting infected by the viruses, install verified antiviruses, and malwarebytes just to be sure, use metamask extension so your private keys would be encrypted whenever you are trying to use exchanges, and lastly protect your private keys using hardwallets.

Some people have given BRILLIANT answers and WORTH keeping noted, but I am still not able to figure out which one you guys consider the BEST. Ledger is what most people pointed out at, but no one told whether they are using it or not, then no one provided me what it actually cost.

And even my main question about https://www.bitfreezer.us/ was left UNANSWERED. Is BitFreezer a good choice or not? I am talking about it in terms of price which is $49, as mostly other ones I have found are near $100 or even $200.

Thank you

Thanks for this article, as a newbie i have learned something to protect my wallet if i have one because for now i don't have any wallet.

Aside from stable anti virus in your computer you should keep your private keys a 100% safe by always vigilant of joining sites that they are not fake, avoid phishing sites that well ask for your private keys and passwords and limit your airdrop because you might mistakenly input your private keys instead of wallet address. This hardware wallet is not familiar better you use the famous nano ledger a hardware wallet that proven tested for many years.

does this function like trezor? (flashdisk-like hardware that can be used as a wallet to store tokens).

Antivirus is really a good choice. Some even level up their security by installing extensions that can examine links and sites thoroughly before you visit them. For me, I just check the https and bookmarking so I won't be directed to a phishing site.

If you comply with the minimum requirements for the security of your computer, you can somehow be sure of the security of your assets. If you want to hack, then there's nothing you can do. Hackers will find any way to do this.

I use antivirus software to protect my computer, but I am still being careful because there are new tricks coming out from the scammers/hackers everyday.

As for wallet, I keep majority of my coins in Ledger and trezor hardware wallet.
Yeah me too I used antivirus and I really keep my key wallet in a good condition of software so that it will never hacked by someone. We should keep our private wallet its because if we lost it or hacked theirs no other solution  to solved it.As my suggestion kindly dont open your wallet anywhere and be secured it anytime because our wallet is our future for the huge income.

This is awesome and enough for secure your crypto assets.
Unlucky most people are using Windows OS now.
bitfreezer.us I never heard about it so don't recommend anyone use it. I'm using Ledger Nano and feeling safe with it.

For security, I have a few virtual machine on my PC to storage my crypto asset or what we call a wallet. Safe, clean because of virtual machine act as a 'sandbox' and of course, I won't install anything on those virtual machines, just barely enough for wallet run.
I also have another back up of my wallet in my USB in case there is the hardware failure. I think I'm pretty safe.

What happened if you lost our USB drive or its been corrupted?

I think you also need to write down your seeds and privatekey as a backup. VM is also good, but I have one laptop I just dedicated for my crypto trading activity. No website browsing no clicking whatsoever. I also have several USB's as backup though, but I just really on them 100%.

I use common sense. Dont click on any unknown links, download attachments or enter your login details on unknown websites. Double check that you are on the correct website. Have a decent antivirus. Scan your PC regularly and use USB sticks from unknown sources.

As for security, you can talk for a very long time and it is very blurry, because today there are no programs that would guarantee 100% security, because each program has a vulnerability. That's my opinion.
