Title: [Question] Bitcoin Quilts would you buy one?
Post by: Spazzer on March 09, 2018, 11:48:19 AM
Question: Looking to see if there is interest in Bitcoin or Cryptocurrency quilts/throws.

I have access to a local community of quilters that raise money for their quilt guild, breast cancer and other charities. I was going to pitch them the idea of creating some quilts related to Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency. I would than Auction/Sell them off here on the forums.

Some of the ideas:
Custom QR Codes
Bitcoin (Ethereum, Neo etc) Quilt
They can range in size, but I felt like a Throw (Lap Quilt) 60'x60' (153x153cm) would be the size of most interest.

Let me know if you would be interested in buying a quilt or throw.
or
If you have any ideas or suggestions of what they could make.

Not to make anyone jealous, but here is one of the quilts they created for me when I was a kid. https://i.imgur.com/30uBVnr.jpg

Very nice quilt.

I really think you should do a quilt related with Crypto..especially on the https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=217.0  section.

I am sure there will be interest in a quality quilt...as there are collectors that will collect anything Bitcoin related

Pitch successful. First quilt has been started. It will be a Throw Quilt 60'x60' (153x153cm) with orange/yellow fabric. Here is a sneak photo.

I will post more details as it unfolds. It will be auctioned off when completed.

Also, if you want to you can pm me, but what's he average price? I might have something on my mind, not bitcoin related but still interested.

Feel free to send me a private message. I don't personally make these quilts a local charity group that a family member is involved with does. They range anywhere from $500-$15,000+ depending on the size, detail and work required to build it. The pokemon quilt for example took about 100 hours and than the cost of the material itself. It depends if it's hand quilted or machine which references if needle and thread by hand or done by an automated machine. A quilt similar to the pokemon in detail (not using the franchise as an example) would go for about $5,000, which sadly if you add up the hours put into it does not even equal minimum wage.

The best way to describe a quilt is like a blanket. See Wikipedia. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quilt) It comes down to personal preference when it comes to using a quilt. You can hang them up on your wall, put them on your bed or even curl up under one when watching tv to stay warm. I've always personally used quilts when curled up watching tv. However, most people buy them to put on their beds or hang them up depending on their value.

I would be extremely interested in purchasing a quilt, but after reading through the thread it sounds like it might be absurdly expensive. I'm not sure if you're saying that your quilts would be somewhere around $500+, but that is quite a bit for a Bitcoin blanket. Not trying to take anything away from it, because I'm sure there would be  someone willing to buy it at auction, especially if it is a limited edition collectible that has a lot of time and work put into it.

What sort of prices are you thinking the final product will fetch? The design looks really simple, which isn't a bad thing, but it's not going to really take anyone's breath away.

The one that is being worked on right now which will be 60x60 -hand stitched quilting- would on average go for about $1000. Most quilts are rather expensive due to the beforementioned time and effort that goes into creating them. Note: The pictures to date are only the centre section, there will be a blue/green outer area and boarder from my understanding.

Here is an example from the internet of what hand stitches.

This goes without saying, but these would be one in a kind and are not mass produced. I should be getting updated pictures soon and can show the detail that goes into them.

If anyone is interested in something unique and custom the price can be negotiated for a custom project. It would just either decrease size, amount of material or amount of hours spent on the product. To give some insight the material for this project alone costs around $240-340 ($8-20/yd). I know the group did a baby quilt recently that was around $400 and was 40x40. Just depends what people want and these things last forever if taken care of. Note: I started this thread in hopes to support local community of quilters that raise money for their quilt guild, breast cancer and other charities.

It might not work but was worth a shot. Worst case I end up with a 60x60 quilt for myself :P

$1,000 sounds wild to me, but maybe I just lack the appreciation needed for this kind of thing. I've never really considered how long it takes to make a handmade quilt, but if they really last forever and the final product is looking good then it's probably worth it.

I might be interested in a "baby quilt" if I can find a custom design that I'm really into spending that kind of money on. Your worst case scenario really doesn't sound that bad to me. I'm really looking forward to seeing the updated pictures, because that could change everything.

Here is an update of the Bitcoin quilt. This is what it will look like finished. There is no hand stitching done yet or back attached.

Note: I was told the blue is a lot lighter than it appears in the image.

Thats a nice looking quilt. But do you accept Paypal or credit cards? I dont like to spend my BTC because there are possible opportunity costs that I wouldnt want to have.

Buying BTC at the price today to buy a quilt would be an irritating inconvenience. Is there a way you can accept fiat directly?

I actually got excited when I read this. Not because I'm planning to throw $1,000 at a quilt, but because it feels a little bit like I've been a part of the journey, albeit to a minimal degree, but it has been fun to watch the thread move along. I'm about a whole day late on reading your reply here, which means that the quilt pictures should be coming any minute now; not trying to rush you, or put you on the spot. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product, because the first pictures had me skeptical that it would even look good. The last pictures you sent had me a bit more convinced that it was going to be a quality end-product. Now that it's done, I'm ready to see it in it's full glory.

Please link the auction within this thread when you have begun the thread.

I have my doubts about the willingness of these users to auction at such a high price, so I'm interested in a multi-faceted manner. I'm curious of the starting price for your auction, the amount of users that will get involved and what kind of interest this is going to drive in general. The collectible section has gotten pretty stale over the years, not to say there isn't wonderful things in there, but it mostly seems like the same things over and over again. Obviously there is reasons for this, there is interest, the market is there, etc.; I'm just saying it would be nice if this could somehow catch fire in the collectible section so that there is some new opportunities around here.

Getting pictures and updates from the quilters has been delayed. I hope to have the auction up and running in 24 hours. Might delay it until there is no blood in the streets and the market recovers a little.

I have to assume that the pictures/updates and the price of Bitcoin are independent from one another, or am I mistaken? I stayed up all night refreshing your thread, titillated with anticipation and now I feel betrayed.  :-[ I've been taken for a fool, please do not play with my heart again. I would like to see your word be kept and the auction up before the moon is high!  :-* It has been nearly another 24-hours and now I am feint with exhaustion from this emotional roller coaster.

I don't know about anybody else, but this gave me chills. The way you worded it was pretty ominous. I would suggest running the auction sooner rather than later, because if the market does recover that just means you'll get less BTC for your quilt. If you throw the auction up before the recovery you might get a good price, and then experience a nice increase in value. That's just my 2-cents though, so do as you please, of course. What is the longest you would delay the auction?

Spazzer, why dont you open a shop in OpenBazaar? Its a decentrlaized market place for BTC users. You would have more exposure for your products and help with OpenBazaar's adoption at the same time.

A little behind schedule, but here is the Auction for the quilt: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3230961

No worries, it's not like we're going to lose a government contract over the delay. I doubt it will effect our bottom line in any significant way. It seems like the auction already has a few people interested, it already has over 100 views and multiple replies.

Here are some pictures of the finished project.

We'll forgive the delay, because the finished project looks really good. I'm impressed, send my compliments to the chef! I honestly think there is going to be success in this endeavor. There has to be a market for this kind of thing, especially considering the demographics of the BTC community with the funds to afford such a thing fits nicely into who I would suspect would be interested in this sort of thing. In fact, even I am interested in this kind of thing. I'm not saying it is an unreasonable price, but it is simply just more money than I am willing or able to offer on such an item.

Very nice, yet again I can't explain enough how surprised I am by the outcome. I believe I said it before that my initial look at the first pictures you put out gave me my doubts. It looks to be extremely well done, and as long as high-quality materials were used I can imagine this is going to be something that the buyer HODLs for 20+ years.
HODL quilts!

I'll be watching the auction, but unfortunately I do not see myself bidding. Good luck, though.

Not a problem. Please dont forget to post your OpenBazaar shop in the thread once you have decided to set up one.

Another place to advertise your quilts, and where they would really be appreciated is in /r/bitcoin.
