Title: Which operating system(s) do you use?
Post by: tkbx on October 12, 2013, 02:53:56 AM
Title pretty much says it all. Which operating systems and versions/distros do you use?

I use Crunchbang Linux (Debian w/ openbox and some amazing out-of-the-box configs and themes)

I also use a Chromebook with Ubuntu XFCE when I need portability and/or decent battery life.

Window 7.

Hate linux cause have to flash GPU in-order to reduce the voltage which also void the warranty.

I dual boot Fedora 16 and Windows 7. I only use Windows 7 because I have to for some things though. I do not like Windows at all.

1.elementary os on my main "workstation"
-i fell in love with this distro a few months ago and absolutely love it. only thing that drives me crazy is inability to place desktop items and inability to add unsigned packages/binaries/executables to the dock.

2. windows8 for ease of use with my block erupters/windows compiling jobs. i use this computer most of the time because its newer and faster than my others.
- once i installed classic shell, it made it much easier for me to work with windows 8.
-malware bytes pisses me off to no end with its constant warnings about some peer i'm connnected to in <insertcoinnamehere/utorrent> network.
3.ubuntu server
- just cuz its probably the best server os ever
4.tinycorelinux on my i586 dell slow-as-shitbook
-its ok i guess, pretty useless if you're a linux newb, but intriguing if you're a nerd

I dual boot Manjaro Linux along with Win 7 Ultimate. Ihave a media pc in the den that has Win 7 cause I need WMC to support the DVB-s Sat Tuner software I use. I got sick of removing malware on a regular basis, so I rarely use windows unless I feel the urge to game. I have a Media server running a Slackware Distro that has been running 24/7 for three years without a hitch. I have 20TB of Movies and TV on it.

It looks like building a lego castle from nothing; nevertheless, it is very well documented.

Pssh. Windows' first foray into PCs was to have these big sub-$200 PoS PCs stacked up in humble cubes, displayed in sexy brown cardboard boxes with nothing on those boxes but hard-to-see writing (both in English and Chinese) and otherwise unadvertised. They had the wonderful LindowsOS on them.

I was a Ubuntu fan boy, until that went to the Unity Desktop. I have tried many distros. Zorin OS is what I have got a few friend on that had older hardware and I grew tired of cleaning malware off every month or two, you have a more windows like user experience.

For user friendly Zorin OS is my top pick. Second would be Linux Mint For fast light and clean, I am quickly becoming a Arch convert, by way of Manjaro. I have it running on a single core AMD with 1gig ram and the performance is not much worse in general internet use, than my 8 core 16gig AMD rig running Windows 7.

Puppy Linux for my netbook, Arch Linux for my dedicated server, and Windows 7 for my home desktop. Unfortunately I installed Win7 on my desktop in a rush after uninstalling Windows 8 (received this thing from someone else), which left me with a lot of driver issues. Planning to re-install soon, maybe alongside a dual-boot Linux but not sure which distro yet.

i think it was either  mint 11 or 13 that had the gparted bug where it would overwrite the mbr, making your drive unbootable. its been so long i can't remember. that being said, i would love i would love to have Elementary os with cinnamon desktop and taskbar. ]the main thing i love about elementary os is how light weight it is and the terminal has a tabbed interface, which i love.

No, it is not a lot by governments, Microsoft gets special deals with governments to push Windows into every box used in government computers all around the world, they go in, invest a couple million in some bullshit to program to teach kids or elderly people using computers and then the got a 70 million, 10 years contract for nearly every machine used in government's computers.

Shit world, I know...

Anyway, I need the lightest distro/configuration you guys can suggest, easy to maintain and updated software, currently running debian jessie, LXDE, very few services, zram, kernel 3.2.0, noatime, preload and all that shit, what can I do more to improve performance even more?

Openbox + tint2? Or some other taskbar? Linux Mint Debian?

That's not the worst part. For about five minutes, I couldn't figure out how to get to the desktop. I thought they actually forced users to only use what was presented to them in that goofy mobile phone tile display. I tried using Internet Explorer from that tile display, and it pops up some stripped-down always-fullscreen version, and I couldn't figure out how to configure it just to set the damned home page because there's no settings icon or box to click. Then I tried going back to the tile display and right-clicking the IE icon - still no way to configure it. I was about ready to give up within the first five minutes.

When Win8 installs (and again as the lumbering behemoth slowly boots), they have about three different phrases for "getting ready" in the progress report. No percentages, no ETA, just different phases of "readiness." I was laughing a lot yesterday - probably would've been hysterical if I weren't sober. I don't know what the Hell they were thinking when so many users still can't even figure out why the displayed time's wrong when "I thought it's set automatically by the time-keeper." Who would ever think it's a good idea to HIDE information and options in a GUI? Fucking Dwarf Fortress is easier to get a grasp on...

Idunno, though. It was like explaining Bitcoin to someone who's never even used a credit card or online bank, and never took an economics class. "Scott - it's saying our Internet's bad. We only got two bars!" "That's just the router. It doesn't actually indicate the strength of your Internet connection, just your wifi connection to the router." "Scott - you hear me? I said the computer says our Internet ain't no good! You need'ta call them!" They were testing me, man...

ETA: Still in the mood to bitch, so here's one last snippet of conversation yesterday. "So what kinda computer I got?" "Uh, a laptop." "Pssh I know that. I mean is it name-brand or not?" "Well, it's HP, so yeah. Hewlett Packard..."

I've decided to switch over to Linux next time I buy/build my next comp or next time I format.

My reasons are to support open source, but primarily for privacy/security.  I'm not a programmer, but I'm reasonable knowledgeable, and have become a privacy nut the past year or two.  I was thinking of Quebes OS for obvious reasons, but then I was thinking there might be more options on more mainstream/compatible distros.  (I got the impression that many distros are different enough that software often is not compatible.)

Privacy and security and network and access/permission control is my number one priority, followed by stability.  And though not a programmer, I consider myself really good with computers and am confident in my ability to google and fix my own problems-- that being said, I do want something that is kind of intuitive for people who think like programmers.  I like things that "just work" and are intuitive to troubleshoot when they don't.

What Linux distro would you guys recommend?  Right now, I'm thinking of:  Quebes, Ubuntu, Elementary, Mint, Manjaro, or just stock Arch that I spend a lot of time on at the beginning.

I have never tried Quebes OS but I went went Manjaro for personal use, dual booted with Win7.
Elmentary OS and Zorin OS are very intuitive . I give Zorin the edge, in that you can make your UI like Windows, Mac or the OS of your choice with a single click.

Ubuntu is a waste of one's finite life. Buggy, broken support for many devices, exploitable, half-made, unpleasant to use, terrible community.

That said, I use and love one of it's derivatives: Mint.

OSX 10.6. Upgraded the other partition to 10.9 but haven't gotten around to seeing if it needs more than 2GB RAM to work smoothly and make it worth backing up this one and trying a migration.

ETA: So far 10.9, after migrating from my fresh backup of 10.6, seems more peppy, likely because of App Nap/compressed memory (http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/06/12/compressed-memory-in-os-x-109-mavericks-aims-to-free-ram-extend-battery-life). Since I only have the stock 2GB RAM in the Mac Mini, I held back on 10.7-.8 after seeing reviews about them being so bloated that they needed 4-8 GB minimum despite the official minimum system requirement of 2.

Windows kernel works on every machine, even older ones.

Linux distros hiccup on less known/old hardware.

In the recent year I had two cases where Linux falls flat on unknown hardware.
But it's free of course, for some it's hard to beat.

Window malware is gettting out of hand. I do  virus/malware cleanups for spare change.
I see more and more devious malware, ransomware and rooted window boxes lately.

The average user, is probably better off with MacOS and the advanced or expert user who is adverse to overprice Apple Pcs, with a linux distro.

Then I tried to install Lubuntu 13.10 but I couldn't install the proprietay ATI driver needed for the switchable graphic card. I guess that I will stay with Lubuntu 12.04 for now... I also have a box running Win7 X64 because I use VC++ for Windows development. I also use XP X32 with VirtualBox on Lubuntu. My phone run Android.

Window 7, hate window 8 interface... Its just weird...

It reminds me of a tablet. Which I hate with a passion by the way.

did u tryed win 8 on your computer?!

It is much faster, you can remove metro and add basic start button

And free backups from NSA.

Is it true? I've heard many times but I've never seen it proven that government has access to any Windows PC which is on the internet.

http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/06/nsa-gets-early-access-to-zero-day-data-from-microsoft-others/

Interesting, I'm not 100% convinced but thanks for the link.
NSA are not only ones who get early access to 0day. Majority of them are not sasser-like guaranteed accesses. Many are browser exploits or elevation of priviledge/UAC bypasses. Most of them require for attacker to already be in local network or the target machine be directly exposed to internet.

But the Windows Update is even more dangerous. It basically without user consent or control installs everything that is served by Microsoft. WGA was one of such disasters. And it was anticipated by reasonably suspicious people to come years before it actually hit the computers.

Linux is faster. I'm currently using Windows because I have some programs which do not run on Linux sadly. But, Linux is more secure and I normally use that for web browsing.

8 is better, it's just that 7 was so "groundbreakingly solid" helping restore faith in Microsoft after horrible Vista.
And a huge wave of FUD (almost like a paid job) concerning metro UI above everything sure did not help.
It was so annoying to see tons of comments from peopl who did not even try that thing out yet.

Even when u are very anal about your security, run on some heavily modded linux distro, watching text porn in terminal, at times you will probably need some shit done, let's say in adobe photoshop. Good luck with that on linux. So huzzah for simplicity and software availability. Or let's say you bought some cheap ass device with no drivers for it in linux. Countless possibilities.

I know of one, I wonder how many companies are upgrading to win7 rather than win 8? The one that I know who is going to 7, they are not doing because they don't like 8, but because the project started way before 8 was out and I guess they feel it would be too costly to change now.

In order from most installs to least: Windows Server 2012/2008 R2, Debian Linux, Windows 7, 8 (with Start8), OSX in VMWare

On physical hardware:
Windows Server 2012 Datacenter on Server running Hyper-V
Windows 8 on Laptop running VMWare
Windows 7 on Tablet (soon to be upgraded to Win8)

people loved win 95, win 98, xp, and win 7.. what are u talking about? only 2000, vista and 8 have been hated. the problem is that microsoft is trying to force innovation, instead of looking at what people actually want and giving it to them. problem is, there really isn't that much more that the typical person wants from a PC o/s.

Was running Lubuntu, but now running vanilla Ubuntu on development box and server.

When I occasionally need Windows 7, I launch it in VirtualBox.

Two years ago I ran three barebone miners on Mint.

I also have an Mac mini at my vacation home that I needed last year for iOS development. While there I usually launch Ubuntu, again from VirtualBox.

Trust me. Ubuntu is a lot faster. That's why it's used to run gaming servers. Linux is simple doesn't take up much space compared to windows 7 and can make a big difference in machine performance. Maybe, you won't see a difference because the machine you are using is very powerful and runs fast anyway. But, you would still see a little bit of difference.

My machine is a few years old but very quick with Ubuntu, plus it has full disk encryption which was super easy (like one check box during installation) to implement. I wonder if there is a side by side windows 7 or 8 VS Ubuntu comparison out there.

What program? It doesn't matter. Ubuntu/Linux alone will run faster. It has less components than Windows. But, yes the only down fall to Linux is the limitations with programs. But, most of the time there are alternatives which do the job.

It's awesome for dedicated stuff, but lacking as complete everyday system in my eyes.

I'd say there's a very high probability of his laptop not supported vs him not being able to simply find drivers.
Sometimes laptops are lacking support from different windows OSes, u can imagine that linux is even worse in this department.
It's all about market share and manpower willing to make drivers based on that market share.

Windows users don't have free timme to cook healthy foods while their OS is frozen, so they havve to eat only microwaved foods. Linux users (specifically, Ubuntu users) can decide to take the latest screen-lock and wait it out by makking a nice stir-fry and lift weights.

Macc users should probably be healthy sinnce all they do is draw on their screen (a very expensive notebook and set of colored pencills, if you ask me). I guess we can just challk that up to mental disabbilities.

Mac IS Linux. Here's my hierarchy on how good the Operating systems are for personal use, yes I've used all of them:

Windows > Mac OS > [Insert 500 other items here] > Linux > Bios Menu > Blue screen of death

Rating of each as a personal computer:
Windows: 10
Mac OS: 8.5
Linux: 1

Windows: Best operating system ever. Has unlimited capabilities if you know what you're doing.

Mac OS: Very good operating system. It is a very easy to use personal computer that has the same software as Windows while offering the same 'open source' strengths as Linux.

Linux: No point in this as a personal computer OS. Mac IS Linux. Same terminal, same commands, same potential, everything is nearly the same except Mac has much better support, usability and stability. For mining and servers though Linux is used a lot, so it's not a bad usage for that. However, as a personal computer, Linux is a no.

Sorry Pedrog, I've used both of them and honestly can't tell any external difference between them as a personal use OS. The only main differences is that Mac can run things like Photoshop while Linux you have to go through Wine, and sometimes that takes days to set up to run properly.

Here other people in a thread that agree with me that there's basically no difference between the two: https://forums.freebsd.org/viewtopic.php?&t=1852

I'm not saying there's no advantage to using Linux, there is, in servers and mining. I just would not use it as a personal OS, even installing something so basic as 'Flash' for web browsers can take a beginner hours to set up, forget installing something like drivers as the drivers for 2 of my computers were not even available.

Sorry it's just true that OS X is taking over Linux users: http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2012/08/osx-killed-linux/ . Try it out at an Apple store and use the Mac OS terminal, use some Linux commands, find out they work, play with it more, and voila, you realize it's same thing except you can run Photoshop.

I keep hearing people having trouble setting Photoshop to work in Linux. But the thing is Photoshop should not work in Linux at all. Wine is just a clever compatibility layer.
I am not sure if some people realize that Photoshop is an application designed for Mac and Windows only.
It obviously has to do with the very low market share that Linux has.

Linux is not inferior/superior to other OS, is just a different OS for different people.
Personally I find Linux to be more simple to understand and use because is a transparent OS, and you have access to everything, endlessly versatile and customizable.

So, do I say that Linux is superior because of that? No...not really, all I say is use the system that fits you best.

The same thing is just apparent, while they do share UNIX commands (common legacy) if you go deeper the similarity ends.

I really cant say...is different from people to people.

If you used Windows for a number of years and you are already heavily accustomed with it, you will find the transition next to impossible.
I have a Win7 installation for gaming and the minute I finish the game I feel the desperate urge to go back to Linux where is warm and comfy :) You will feel the same :)

It is really not complicated to use, is just...different.

Well then, the best compromise is to use dual boot.

Keep a Windows installation for whatever apps you don't find in Linux or don't want to use their Linux equivalents, and a Linux installation for everything else.
That will also help the transition (if there is going to be one) and you will have the best of the two worlds.

There's no such obscure things in linux

Paranoid much? If you're on the Internet your ISP can track everything you do. If you use Chrome, Google can track everything you do. If you use apt-get to download a software, their servers can track what you do. In the end someone will always know what you're doing unless you're disconnected.

Strictly speaking, as some flavors of Mac OS X were certified by The Open Group (which is the certifying body for the UNIX trademark) they are Unices, but as certification is rather expensive, no Linux distribution has yet been registered as Unix, though they aim to be compliant...

I have multiple computers. Windows XP SP2 is currently my main OS since it's installed on my main laptop. The system restore disc only has SP2 installed (since SP3 wasn't around back then). I'll probably be updating it to SP3 soon.

My other computers use XP SP3, Windows 8, and Windows 7 (it's a netbook so it's the starter edition :(). I've used pretty much all of the Windows OSs including 95, 98, 98 SE, 2000, Me, XP, Vista, 7, and now 8. XP is by far my favorite out of these.

I also have a few Linux discs which I boot from every now and then. I mostly use Ubuntu or Linux Mint but I also have discs for Knoppix, Morphix, Browser Linux, and Puppy Linux.

For obvious reasons, I strongly recommended you don't connect that machine to the internet, keep it offline.

Actually I use a windows 7 and Mobile IOS. I consider both great system (only Windows xp was better than Windows 7, and Mobile Ios is very good) :)

It really depends upon how you plan to use it. Linux is generally more stable and secure, while Microsoft is easier to use. Linux and Unix are better as servers, while most people use Windows for client machines since there's more software available and end-users know how to use it.

I am a Microsoft Windows user! :)

I used to work on a Windows 7 until Microsoft develop Windows 8 and 8.1. There is a big differences between Windows 7 and 8. The way how Windows 8 is turning on is quiet faster then win 7. Also, when you press shut down, the PC is going off in a few seconds. When I install this version I was really shocked from the results.

The layout and design are similar to win 7 but with some upgrades. What I have really discover was the way how the windows work on games. Before I run DOTA 2 I install the new updates from N-vidia and then I run the game. When I play the game on win 7, there are few details that I couldn't turn on, but now the game run on a full audio and video quality.

The only problem that Windows has and Mac and Linux don't are the viruses. I think that Microsoft don't care or like some conspiracy theory telling us, they intentionally create viruses so they can spy their users...

Careful posting what OS you use.. This info could be used by people looking to gain access to your systems to steal your BTC.

Perhaps I'm paranoid, But giving out any information that could be used by cyber criminals is generally a bad call in my opinion.

Windows 10 isn't so bad actually. You could get the enterprise version. And kill the forced updates. I've been playing with it for awhile.

My equipment cost me $600 for 48 GB of RAM and 16 cores of 3 GHz with AES-NI.... running Windows and Linux (and Android) and some other stuff on it. (Not tried Mac OS-X on it, don't think it's practical to try.)

I could go cheaper and get similar hardware for $300 with 16-24 GB of RAM.

Everyone on Windows 7 or 8 or 8.1, you can do a free upgrade legally to Windows 10, until July 2016 I think.

IF you make a backup or image of your old OS, you can just restore it back to your previous version.

Eventually, you will have to upgrade or do a clean install of Windows 10, depending on your work or purpose or whatever.

If you've previously upgraded, your Windows 10 clean install will be free, legally, tied to your computer. (unless you change motherboards or something.)
