Title: Electrum: Lost seed, but DO have both the private keys and 2fa code access
Post by: apexcrypto on March 16, 2018, 11:37:34 PM
Hi All,

I have an old 2fa wallet with a zero BTC balance that still has BTG credited to it from the fork. It seems that I have lost the seed words, but I do have all of the private keys from the wallet
as well as the ability to get the 2fa code

I'd like to restore the wallet to a BTG wallet and claim my forked coins, but I can't access the seed phrase from electrum, and my BTG wallet (coinomi) wont accept just  the private keys.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Not a huge amount of money involved, about 2 BTG to recover, worth $130 ATM...but I'd like to claim the coins and move on.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I believe you would need the seed to get the 2-of-3 private-keys necessary to spend the coins without TrustedCoin's third key. But I'm not sure about that.

I can only think about this method - which requires the wallet seed: [TUTORIAL] How to extract Bitcoin Gold from a 2fa Electrum Wallet [STEP BY STEP] (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2550529.0)

Thanks, I've read many similar posts here, but all of the ones that I found were cases where people had lost access to the 2fa from trustedcoin.
That is not my problem......I  am able to receive 2fa codes for this wallet.

I just cant figure out how to workaround not having the actual seed words even though, as I mentioned, I have the private keys in a text file as well as the ability to still get 2fa codes for the wallet in question.

I doubt that the 2FA seeds would be compatible with most of the other HD wallets, if at all. The 2FA seed contains the 2 of the master private keys instead of just one. Electrum also doesn't use a standard accepted by most wallet to generate the seed.

Are you sure you're able to get the private key for the wallet? Multisig wallets doesn't work the same. You'll have to wait for a trustable fork of Electrum to be out. The BTG version of Electrum isn't trustable, AFAIK.

Unfortunately, you are out of luck... :-\

2FA wallets in Electrum are a special type of 2-of-3 MultiSig wallet. In normal operation, you are only able to access 1 set of the 3 sets of private keys that make up the wallet. The 2nd set is "hidden", but recoverable with the seed, and the 3rd set is owned/controlled by TrustedCoin.

You say that you have the private keys for you wallet, I suspect you did this by either right clicking an address and selecting "private key" (or attempting to use the export function). Unfortunately, that will only have given you ONE set of private keys and to be able to move coins from that address, you need at least 2 sets.

To be able to claim the fork... you need the seed so you can recover a "2fa disabled" version of your wallet (as per the guide linked upthread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2550529.0)) which restores the the 2nd set of private keys into your wallet file. From there you can derive all the keys required to be able to manually create, sign and broadcast a BTG transaction using "BitcoinGold Core" (as per the guide (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2550529.0)).

Additionally, Electrum 2FA wallets do NOT store the seed in the wallet file, nor do they provide access to the seed from within the application, as this would make it possible for a thief who had access to your wallet file + password to bypass the 2FA system by simply restoring from your seed.

So, unless you happen to have a "2fa disabled" version of your wallet file somewhere, the only thing I can suggest at this point is that you contact TrustedCoin (https://api.trustedcoin.com/#/contact-us) and see if they would be willing to sign a partially signed BTG transaction for you.

Yeah, I kind of suspected as much. I had a feeling the private keys that I exported weren't the same as usual, since Coinomi accepted them, but showed they had no funds, even after I had verified the related public addresses did indeed contain BTG.

As I said, it's only $130. I'm grateful after reading so many horror stories of people with large balances having other 2fa issues.

Actually, I do have the seed, but I can't at the moment read it. I put it in an AES256 encrypted document in my google drive, but the password that I have for that file in my local password manager isnt working.
Sounds like trying to solve that mystery is the thing to do.

Thanks to all for their thoughts.

You might reconsider that form of backing your seed up.
You shouldn't rely on a 3rd party to keep / grant you access to your seed.
There is always the possibility of googles server refusing to work properly. Never rely on a 3rd party to secure your seed. Even with encryption.

but the password that I have for that file in my local password manager isnt working

It seems like all of your passwords don't work?
Are you sure your keyboard layout didn't change in the meantime? Did you change any other language-related settings while/before/after setting up those passwords?

Thanks, that's good advice. I am a big believer in redundancy. For the sake of brevity in my post, I didnt mention that I have local copies also and none of them open with the
password that I have associated with the file. A gentle lesson that all the redundancy in the world won't protect your data if youre not painstakingly careful when encrypting it.
