Title: Guess the hash and win BTC
Post by: tkbx on October 21, 2013, 04:10:05 AM
If anyone can guess what text hashes to the following (SHA256), they will win 0.05 BTC

c1271518875164d4fdf824bff61dcdc59e56ecd2967e8620db86e4acfbf62e1b

Clues:

- The text is available on the Internet
- It's a proper sentence, with capitalization and punctuation
- It's a quote from a conservative leader
- The quote is _not_ in quotation marks

Good luck. If nobody has guessed it in a few days, I'll post the answer.

EDIT: I forgot which quote I used, fixed the clues 11:52 AM EST 2013-10-23

The answer is:

If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom.

The quote is by Dwight Eisenhower.

And how can we figure it out?
Do we have to try everything?

It's a libertarian-ish quote

What hash algo is it?

What hash algo is it?

I don't know. I've tried md5, sha1, sha2 and base64.

It's sha256:

- md5 is 32 characters
- sha1 is 40 characters
- sha2 is not one algorithm, but a series of them (including sha256)
- base64 is not a hash (the opposite, actually), and it has A-Z, a-z, 0-9, whereas most hashes only have a-f, 0-9

I thought so, but it could have been SHA3-256

I believe the hash is sha256 and it is an "anarchistic" quote!

Ah then there's this other thing. OP said conservative politician which made me think British Tory party right away but then I saw his profile and he's American. So are we talking republicans? Or is this any conservative politician anywhere in the world at any period in history?
