Title: Beware of Cryptomining malware !!!
Post by: dindasulis on March 20, 2018, 09:26:29 AM
Cryptomining malware is when crooks covertly infect your computer with software to do the calculations needed to generate cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, Monero or Ethereum; the crooks keep any cryptocoin proceeds for themselves.

If you get infected with a cryptominer:
1.  all your data is still there, and you can still access it, so cryptomining sounds like small beer compared to ransomware. However, your computer will probably be annoyingly slow, your laptop fans will be roaring all the time, and your battery life will be hopeless.
2. On a mobile device, all those side effects are much more of an issue, because short battery life means outages when your phone goes flat, and the battery overheating associated with continuous super-heavy processor usage could cause permanent damage.

Ironically, a lot of coinmining software advises you not to bother running it on mobile phones: the computing power of your mobile just isn’t sufficient for decent results, so the costs outweigh the benefits
.

Steam Shuts Down Game for Cryptomining Monero from Gamers

Valve Corporation, the company behind the gaming website Steam, suddenly pulled a game called Abstractism from its store. Customer complaints and the game’s performance metrics point to another instance of crypto jacking.

Abstractism has been marketed as a simple platformer where you control a bunch of pixels and try to carry it successfully to the other end of the level. In this case, you were managing a square in a black and white environment. All you had to do, was make it jump from one wall to the other — entertaining and straightforward enough.

It was a cheap game, too — retailing at $0.99, although there was a 51% special promotion ongoing until August 2, before the pull. Okalu Union developed the game and published it jointly with dead.team. While Steam banned both game publishers, Okalu Union still has apps available on Google’s Play Store — makes you wonder if there’s any hidden mining software contained in it.

Okalu Union doesn’t seem to have an online presence, unlike publisher dead.team which has its website. However, just at a quick glance, it’s clear they abandoned the webpage and put minimal effort into it. Their official page has a total of two entries — one on May 26, and one in November 2017.

Crypto mining - is a high-performance algorithm that uses the available system resources to search for virtual coins. To save money, virtual cashiers seek to exploit system and device users they do not know.
If you are using multiple browsers and know that a website is using your system resources for malicious purposes, you can block it completely on your PC. With the Windows operating system, go to: C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers \ etc. Then edit the hosts file by right-clicking and open in notepad. Add line 0.0.0.0 coin-hive.com at the end.

An easier way of doing this is to install a good adblocker like uBlock Origin. It should take out the CoinHive alternatives as well.

I am a person who is very careful in downloading and opening websites if I feel suspicious and can contain a better malware virus. The kit does not open it for our own security, because from what we know malware does not only steal btc or our money but personal data. we too can be attacked by malware which data is very important, so my advice is to be more careful in downloading or opening suspicious web.

Gosh. First hacking, then now malware? This is some scary stuff. I guess we can never be too careful. It’s reassuring to know though that developers are using artificial intelligence and machine learning to to spot the behaviors that indicate crypto mining. So hopefully, security will improve in the future?
