Title: Where do you store your 24 word phrase?
Post by: jerry0 on March 22, 2018, 04:16:40 PM
Back then i used electrum.  Back then i would write down the 12 word on a piece of paper and leave it in my apartment.  Of course that is not safe in case something happens to my apartment etc.  I thought about keeping an online backup such as imagine a cloud service like dropbox or google.  But of course i don't just type the 12 or 24 word phrase on it and then if you access my email, you have access to my document with it.  Because i would type the seed in keepass.  So in order for me to get to the file, i have to have to email and password.  Then have my keepass password in order to open it.

I heard people say this is not safe because keeping it online is never safe it case it get hacked.  Well if theres a fire or anything happens to your computer/apartment etc, then everything burns down, then what?  I heard people say they have a safe and vault but would if its a huge fire etc.  Thus my thoughts were as long as you have an online backup of it... make sure you put a long password for your email and also keepass, then you have access to it.

Do people here still not recommend this?  I got a nano ledger s and thus keep my btc there.  At the moment, i wrote it down on a piece of paper.  The thing is i could type the seed in my keepass... thus if someone got my laptop, well they still have to know my password for keepass.  Or if email get accessed somehow, they still need to get my password for keepass.

Does anyone here have ideas on this?  I heard people mention they break the 24 word in half or a few pieces and put it in secure location.  Like i heard people say 2 different bank deposit boxes.  Would that be smart?  Of course theft could happen in those but very rare.  But if you leave it in say 3 places, well if something happens in one place, well you won't have access to say 8 of words if you break it down into 24 words.  Does anyone have thoughts on this?

What is the best way to do this?  Also heres another scenario.  What if you travel quite a bit.  I do this quite much and thus i keep my nano ledger with me.  So where do i keep my 24 word seed then?  The thing is with electrum with the 12 word seed, sure you could possibly remember the 12 words.  I never tried but that probably wouldn't be that hard.  Like imagine you remember just the first 6 words, that wouldn't be that hard.  Now with the nano ledger s, 24 words is way too much.

Now obviously walking around anywhere with your seed is foolish.  But if you travel quite a bit and have your nano ledger s with you, what is your best suggestion?  But in general, should you store your seed in your home?  Or in a bank or somewhere else?  The other place someone mentioned that was interesting was imagine you have a box in casino where you keep money/chips there.  That certainly seems like good idea but i dont have access to it.

How many cases has there been where there was fire and someones laptop/computer and safe or their documents got destroyed?  Certainly there has to be quite a bit.  So does anyone have tips on this?  The other thing was maybe store it in a usb drive in keepass and encrypt it and store it somewhere in the house where like in a box where it would look like nothing?  The other thing i thought was how about breaking it in 2 or 3 pieces and putting it in a book etc?  But of course you dont keep 8 words there.  You add more words like a sentence and try to make it look like its just scribble?

I will try to answer as many questions as possible but I feel I will miss a few or won't have the answer to all of them.

-Don't keep your seed at your apartment unless it is in "cryptosteel". That will protect it from fire and water.
-Keeping it in two different bank vaults is as safe as you can get, and it is the method I currently choose. (you can use 3, I know people who use 4 places even).
-Don't know where to keep it if travelling, I don't travel much. In that case I leave mine at bank, but again don't travel much.
-Best suggestion for travel is to get another Nano S and load it with travelling expenses or the couple of coins you feel are going to make moves during your travel.
-Generally I wouldn't store my seed at home, I would do this for a secondary device that had an insignificant amount on it perhaps.

Here what i do for this, I take a screenshoot and change the format from .jpg to random format and change the file name and backup it on my android phone since android is pretty safe from backdoor or spyware. If you want make a backup online, then create a new email from gmail after that create really strong password and link your new email to your main email. After that upload your backup to google drive and set private or only you. You must create random password for new email, since you already linked your account then you can try forget password from your main email. But still if you dont have access to your main email then its gone :/ .

Probably some of them still recomend this.

I just split my word by 6 and safe it to my wardrobe and one on my pocket. Of course i still have backup on my phone just in case. So, i dont know about bank deposit boxes.

Write some of words to paper and put it on your pocket. Lets say you remember 10 words (more is better) just write rest of 14 words on paper and keep it. Even if someone got this, they still need to find rest of your words.

I keep it on my home.

Probably, my first answer can help you with this.

I will give you some different idea to store your 24 words seeds step by step. :)

1. Take any English dictionary, for example, online Oxford Dictionary, note down its (Author name, Date of publication) I'll tell you why at the end.
2. Now you have your 24 words seeds phrase for your nano ledger, for example, it can be like below
(1st.cat, 2nd.light, 3rd.bag, 4th.candle 5th...........................................24th. orange)
3. Since all seeds phrase of your Nano S will exist in the Dictionary so what you have to do now is find on which page no. of online dictionary the words are listed for example the 1st-word cat is listed on page no. 7, the 2nd-word light is on page no. 9, the 3rd-word bag is listed on page 12, the 4th-word candle is listed on page 17, & so on for all words, till 24th-word orange is listed on page 34, note down all the page no. & highlight the words till 24th word in a dictionary & save it.
4. For example, your result will be like (7,9,12,17,...............34)
5. Now the numbers & dictionary will act as a private key if you want you may throw away your card on which 24 words you have noted down.

Now no one knows what is your strategy for keeping safe your Nano S keywords, so you can just store above nos on your computer, on mobile or anywhere if some steal it they can't understand what is the meaning of these nos. Only you and only you know what is the meaning & which Dictionary you have used to encrypt it in this case i.e Oxford Dictionary. If you accidentally delete that online Dictionary, no worries you can also find it online, I told you above to note the Author name & date of publication so it will be easy for you which version of Dictionary you have used to encrypt your seeds.

Okay, one more thing if you accidentally deleted the dictionary with highlighted keywords from your PC or your window fails, & you have the numbers but now how will you know what was the word you marked even if you know the page no. of the word. In this case when you are noting down the page no. also note down the line no. & place no. of that word against each page no. 8) Ultimately your result will be like below.

Page no.   Line no.   Word Place no.
7               eg. 5              eg. 2
9               eg. 14            eg. 6
12             eg. 2              eg. 4
17             eg. 16            eg. 1
.                .                      .
.                .                      .
.                .                      .
.                .                      .
34             eg. 1              eg. 7

Thinking of being hacked is just overkill. You can simply keep your phrase on an email. I do make a unique email for every key that you make. My friends and my group have also started to copy this style and it is safe. Other thing is to print it on a piece of paper and laminate it and paste it in your wall, but you need to insert it on a group of words and place it on many group of number and you are the one who only know where it is.

Some of the advice in this thread is truly awful.

Never take a picture of your seed and store it unencrypted on any digital storage. You are just asking to lose your coins with the simplest of hacks or thefts.
Never rely on your memory to memorise all or part of your seed. The human brain is far too fragile a thing.
Never save your seed in an email address. You are reducing the security of your phrase to a simple, brute-forcable password.

I don't know anything about the 24 word phrase. All I know is that you are making sense in what you are saying. Keeping a hardcopy of your personal information is a good practice since I also wrote down my private key 3 times and distribute it on three different and memorable places for me. I am interested on how did you get a nano ledger because in our country, it is very rare.

It probably save if you change the picture format to another format. Lets say *jpg to random format like *awqe atleast it will safe for people who dont know how to check the real file format. But if someone open it with notepad and check the code, probably they know what format it is and the thief can change the format back to *jpg again. So, we need to change some code a little bit and this is what i do until now and save it on my phone.

4. For example, your result will be like (7,9,12,17,...............34)
5. Now the numbers & dictionary will act as a private key if you want you may throw away your card on which 24 words you have noted down.

Wise one.  :D

Love how he explained this.
It could be the best one since the one who will find the dictionary if you somehow lost it will need to decipher all that highlighted words. (if you will highlight it)
Since not everyone knows what would it be, the choices will be trash it or waste some time to decipher it and where would they input it.

They have so many ideas here and I really love it. Might be doing some of them later.
Something like a notepad in my smartphone then change the extension into .ERR or something else. They will not think the error came from the extension just like that.

I recommend the cryptosteel way, or something similar.
If Cryptosteel is a bit expensive, try the following:
Order some stainless steel business cards from ebay (few cents / piece)
Buy or borrow an engraver tool.
Engrave the seed (with some modification, if needed to make it harder to guess what's that) into the metal business card.
Put it into your safe or into a safe in the nearest bank branch.
Voilá

It is dangerous to tell people about where do you store 24 word phase , isn't it? Please don't share such thing in public. It will give many hint to criminals who want to stole our cryptocurrency. Anywhere is a good place to store a 24 word phrase as long as nobody knows and we still remember about where to find it. Hard copy is very good to prevent us from lossing access to our wallet, no doubt we need that but don't tell anyone.

Being so much paranoid can kill you. Just write it down and keep it on a zip-lock and put it somewhere safe. And thats it, just like that. You're thinking too much. Also spread your bitcoins don't just keep it in one place, there are so many ways to keep your bitcoins, try all of them. I write my word phrase on an old notebook and keep it somewhere not safe, since no one know i got bitcoins.

He's completely right. You need your botty smacked. Everything you're doing is needlessly risky.

Multiple micro sd cards with the seed in txt files in properly encrypted folders created on a computer that'll never see the internet again will do the job. Deposit them in various places and you should be fine.

Okay some of the options here are really useful, but I think all this makes sense when you have enough amount in the wallet.
There are many options one can take like some posted above,
splitting up the words on 2-3 different places can be a good option as well, but what if you need them and then you don't have them nearby.
I think if its a 12 word, it is possible to memorize it easily.
And even for a 24 word phrase, its possible to memorize it, or maybe you can encrypt it into something easy to remember, but then you'll have to remember the decrypting process as well.

Human memory is simply hopeless. Unless you're superhuman you'll forget within days. I have tons of encrypted files that I can't get into any more and I forgot the passwords within a few weeks or months, and they would've been variations on my usual ones.

Unless you spend a few minutes every day practicing and double checking, your seed will be toast in no time. And to be able to check and remind it'll need to be written down anyway.

Spend $50 on sd cards and a knackered laptop and you should be secure as can be for life.

It is very unsafe to store your seed phrase on a computer. It is exponentially bad to keep it on someone else's cloud service.

Writing down your seed (using a pen) on a piece of paper and then storing it in your safety deposit box at the bank is a pretty good solution if you do not have a whole lot of bitcoin. One even better solution would be to buy small engraving tool (I have seem them for less than $10) and engrave your seed phrase on a piece of stainless steel. That way it won't get burnt up in a fire or get wet if there is a flood.

However, keep in mind that the bank does not ensure safety deposit boxes (in the US at least). So make sure you have separate insurance if you have a whole lot of bitcoin stored there.

I recommend having few usb sticks with encryptstick software.

1. Copy/paste private keys in txt file and copy them on those USB sticks.

2. Encrypt usb sticks using encryptstick or similar software. It look like file explorer but encrypts everything that you put in main folder.

3. Store one at home, one on some other safe place and third always carry with you.

If something happens at your home you still have two copies left. If you lose one that you carry with you you still have two left.

4. Password used to decrypt those files shouldn't be dictionary word. I recommend  using two sentence that have meaning to you.

Remember first letter of every word in the sentance and that should be you password. Throw in one number in the password and you have pretty strong password.

Write that two sentances on paper, put that paper in waterproof container and store it somewhere.

Password should be easy to remember for you. And if you forget it somehow, you can always look at the paper in container.

In my own to keep the 24-word seed phrase safety, I just paste it into a notepad then archive it as rar file with the password and then I archive it again with another different password. The password that I use is the password that I never forget for a long time.

Then I uploaded it into google cloud drive from Google, which is free and safe so that if my laptop is broken or damaged I still had the seed phrase or private keys and anytime soon I can download my seed phrase and extract it whenever I need it.

The good thing here, you can save your rar file that includes the password in your Google cloud drive on Gmail and anytime if ever your laptop or any devices broken or stole you can buy a new device and just download your seed phrase and extract then you can restore your wallet without worrying about your bitcoin.

I recommend having few usb sticks with encryptstick software.

No saving any files in USB stick is not safe for me as a technician if you are not using the USB stick for a long time it may cause of corrupted files and USB could be broken. Not a good idea if you wanted to save your wallet seed phrase for how many years.

Is there any particular difference between Encrypstick software and encrypting Apple's Disk Utility choosing the format Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)?

I never had any problems with my USB sticks.
And if something happens and it becomes corrupted thats why it is good idea to have three USB sticks. If something happens to one of them you have two other.

I mentioned Encryptistick just because I use it. There is probably better software for encryption.

Not to mention that even if you rehearse it every day, a completely unpredictable illness, infection, bang to the head, etc. and you could forget it immediately.

What is the point of having a 24-word seed phrase with such a high level of entropy, if you then reduce that to a simple password and store it on the cloud where it can be easily hacked, downloaded and brute-forced?

Simple, I keep on my Gmail, but I'm not downloading it to keep it safe. Only have a look into it if you need. Keeping it also in Gmail means you can access it to have a look on your combo words anywhere even if you forgat your phone somewhere.

OP do you really have to be afraid so much? Ok, it's your decision (still can't understand why do you want so much security).
You have written so much reasons, the only way I can think about is to include that very small piece of paper where would be seed under the skin by some surgery, there is no other so safe way. Or just remember it and then burn but I bet you are afraid you'll forget it.
Another way is also just write some part in some areas, I think no one will understand.

I would basically store in my vault or in my mail as well secured with many authentications. Next i also keep the same with my parents as well as they store it more safely than me lol. Still i would advise everybody to keep the seed with whomever u will feel safe or store and do not let anybody know if u feel reserved.I also try to keep screenshots in my wallet for any emergency or something.

First off, how can anyone remember their 24 word phrase?  That is just ridiculous.

Okay so if someone has access to a safety deposit box at a bank or say 2 or 3 banks, then would that be the ideal situation?  Thus put half the seed in one deposit box and the other half seed in the other half?

One issue would be if a thief drills and get access to safety deposit boxes right?  But even if somehow do this, they still need the other 12 words.  So i mean unless both your safety deposit boxes gets accessed, then you are pretty safe right?

7               eg. 5              eg. 2
9               eg. 14            eg. 6
12             eg. 2              eg. 4
17             eg. 16            eg. 1
.                .                      .
.                .                      .
.                .                      .
.                .                      .
34             eg. 1              eg. 7

Interesting!  Thanks for the idea for storing our backup phrases seed.
Usually I will note it down in a wallet size writing notebook and place it in my wallet. I'm gonna switch to your idea now.:)

Are safe deposit boxes much more safer than at home?  Because i heard cases of these deposit boxes getting drilled in banks.  But here is the thing though.  If you have cash there, well thieves could take it.  But say you put half your seed there, well that person doesn't even need to take your piece of paper.  They could just take a picture or write it down etc.  But of course the issue is they would need the other seed in a completely different bank.   And let say you check the deposit box once in a while, you would never know if it was compromised right?  However if you leave it in 2 or 3 banks, that surely would be very hard or close to impossible?

So based on that if you leave it in your house or apartment but just put it in strange places, is that better or worst than 2 safe deposit boxes?

You can also encrypting the phrase. Your index of phone numbers that has 30 pages, and your recovery phrase has 24 words. You could assign page one for first word, page two for second word and so on.

I wouldn't leave my private key on my apartment or even my bed room without any back up that I always bring with me. And I wouldn't gamble myself to put anything important such as private key or mnemonic / recovery words on cloud storage. You may trust the service but it's still risky to put anything like that there in google or drop box. I'll write it down and just leave it somewhere that I can remember and I have my back up that will be put on a thing that I always bring like real wallet.

You say don't put it on google or dropbox.  Well what if you use a program like lastpass or keepass?  Thus someone would not only need your password for you google or dropbox account, they would need the password for your lastpass or keepass.  Isn't that going to be very hard or is that really possible?

I'm not exactly mentioning where I kept my 24-word seed phrase but I have taken enough security precautions so even in the case of natural calamities it won't affect my seed phrase. Yes, I agree with the fact that one should never make any kind of digital copy of that seed phrase but maintaining enough handwritten backup copies is sufficient. I would also recommend storing such phrase backup copies in multiple geographical locations to avoid any accidental loss.

I guess I'm lucky because I have the perfect hiding place at work.

It's part of my job to manage a very large MySQL database on a secured server (besides me, only one person has admin access). It has several text fields, and my 12 words Electrum password is hidden in there. I can access it easily because I know the relevant unique ID, but it would be impossible to find it using any SQL request.

This is my advice: hide text within text. If you're smart, you could hide a 24 word phrase right here, on this board (but you'd need a backup in case this website goes down).

If you do not want to leave any kind of trace of your seed words and you don't want to risk to store your words on the Internet or in some kind of digital device then the only option that you have is to remember those words write it down and try to remember them, it may seem hard at first but if you do that for some minutes every single day eventually you're going to remember them and after some time those words will be imprinted in your long term memory and you will never forget them.

Title: Re: Where do you store your 24 word phrase?

If you have 2 safety deposit boxes at 2 different banks, would you say its close to 100 percent safe if you leave one piece in each safety deposit box?  I heard people mention this.  Because in order for anything to happen to it, the thief would need to get access to 2 different banks.  However, the thing is if it was accessed, you wouldn't have a clue because its not like if you leave cash there, well you find out the cash is gone.  Because someone could just write down the words or take picture etc.

But if you leave it in 2 different safety deposit boxes at 2 different banks, thats pretty much as safe as you can get?  But even if you do that, should you still keep a copy of it at home just in case?  Because say something happens to that deposit box and your seed and its gone.   Then your wallet stops working such as nano ledger s, then aren't you screwed?

Because there doesn't seem to be any way where its very good safety measures here.  Like if you leave it in your home, well there could be a fire etc.  If you leave it online encrypted, say in your google or dropbox but do so with using a program like lastpass or keepass encrypted... then wouldn't that be pretty safe?  That way you don't have to worry about anything physically happening to it?  Has there been cases where ppl type their 24 word phrase in say lastpass or keepass and kept it in say gmail or some other cloud service and got hacked?  But that person would need to hack not only gmail or other email, but also the lastpass and keepass.  Thoughts on this?

The answer about the dictionary was quite impressive, in fact that is what I am trying right now because just like the OP; I also scribbled down on a piece of paper the private keys and phrases to my wallet. I even thought I was the only one doing the old school thing because I was thinking most people would be sending screenshot photos to their email or whatnot and so I thought of just writing it down on a somewhat diary with some clues to figure out what the code was and just placed it on a small vault. And for travelling since I do travel a lot, I actually don’t touch my savings wallet so I would not be tempted to sell them.

Trying to get your hands on some 24 word phrases?Hahaha,.. joking. I don't think it's much of an issue to store it, it's not like someone will easily identify what it is and decrypts your wallet. First and foremost, don't store it on your computer or any cloud service, it's unsafe if sh*t happens, such as an email vulnerability, someone accesses your computer or even the HDD fails. Storing it somewhere safe in your apartment would be just fine.

I'm not precisely specifying where I kept my 24-word seed state however I have avoided potential risk so even on account of common cataclysms it won't influence my seed expression. Indeed, I concur with the way that one ought to never make any sort of computerized duplicate of that seed expression however keeping up enough written by hand reinforcement duplicates is adequate. I would likewise prescribe putting away such expression reinforcement duplicates in different geological areas to stay away from any unintentional misfortune.

if it is important to you then make it look like a puzzle   make a .txt file  and  write down your info  then just      change the  .txt to another  extension like .img or anything else  and you can name the document a simple name like   system-32 .img    lmao       ofc you can go more professional on that and more complex if you    use  coding language   that mean if anyone hack your mail and log in your cloud  he will simply find a bunch of weird numbers and letters  not the real seed word  key

also there is an option in Dropbox you can activate it   even if hacker have your mail he still will need your phone  to receive a code  its simply a 2fa using your mobile number

I think that keeping such a thing in a very sure place is imperative because it could mean to many the key to a life time of hard work and a lot of stress/anxiety and not sleeping that people went through to gather their coins . And we know that the only sure place to keep anything is your parents place :p .

Well i usually store my passphrase on my mobile device and also i use my flash drives to make back ups of my important documents and passwords and also, the passphrase of my wallet and my wallet.dat file i don't know why i do that but it's better to be safe than sorry right since in this forum alone there are many reports that they lost the password of his wallet or worse the wallet.dat is corrupted.

I just wrote on the notebook with my pen, and I also backed up in my mobile hard disk. I think it's the most important thing to develop good password habits. The loss of passwords is terrible. We must keep them where we can easily get them.
Storing your coins in an electronic device is a terrible idea if someone got access to your keys you'll lose all your coins immediately I consider it to be a lot more safe to just write your seed words in a piece of paper, maybe it is not the most technological solution but no hacker can hack a piece of paper and to me that is a great advantage.

Just write it down and keep it on a zip-lock and put it somewhere safe. And thats it, just like that. You're thinking too much. Also spread your bitcoins don't just keep it in one place, there are so many ways to keep your bitcoins, try all of them. I write my word phrase on an old notebook and keep it somewhere not safe, since no one knows i gat bitcoins.

I store them in offline because I'm afraid of storing the 24 word phrase in online like storing them in notepad or in Google or anywhere else in online .so I store them in my diary which I always keep in locker .the diary is also a locked diary. The 24 word phrase very important .we can feel the importance of those words only when we will forget our password of our Bitcoin wallet.

your idea is good but if you keep it for a long time the letters in the paper will be erased. I think write your seeds on a paper and take a pic of that paper and keep it in a safe place. hackers can hack only internet-connected devices so except this devices you can keep it anywhere you feel safe.

I have saved my 12 word phrases on paper and kept it copies in different almirahs. Although that is not a very safe way to keep your keys, but rarely does anyone enter my room without my permission. I doubt any thief if ever break into my house would care to collect a piece of paper instead of the ornaments and money. So I use this option. But ideally I should be storing it in a hardware wallet or a very secure password protected file.

make multiple copies, split them up so the whole 24 word phrase in incomplete and store them preferably in a safe deposit box, cold laminated so it is waterproof and If you want to go even further place in a tamper proof bag, seal, splash glitter nail varnish on the bag and take a picture on a non digital camera so you can see if the bag has been tampered with. We are going to FBI levels of security here though haha

This is a very important question and I believe people are thinking about this issue.
If you use some sort of a  cryptic code to convert your seed into some random letters and number then you could save that as a email. You can keep the encryption key with you. Also if you are writing it in a piece of paper, keep it in several locations in your home/apartment as well as keep a copy in a safe box, your storage unit (if you have one). If you think and is creative you might come across many innovative methods to get this done successfully.

I store it on print and a safe. It's hard to keep the seed phrase on a computer since all computers are already prone to hacks, whether that be Mac or Linux, specially Windows. Sometimes I convert the phrase into a hash with a specific algorithm and decrypt it with a personal word of my own. A good tattoo of the QR code somewhere on your body would be okay too.

If we are talking about bitcoin, you can make a private key stored by the phrase BIP38. Thus it is possible to make several copies of a private key, to keep it in the most different places, but in the head to keep 1 word - BIP38. Knowing this phrase, you can decrypt the private key and gain access. If we are talking about other cryptocurrencies, you can save private keys in several places and several copies. Then you don't have to tell anyone. Individually, they won't mean anything. Even if you travel a lot - long-term storage will not be affected

It's common thing to see people storing their seed in a place where it could be easily noticed. I wouldn't advise anyone to put their seed in bank's vault. Why would you give them responsibility of keeping your money safe again. You can keep your seed anywhere as long as you somehow encrypt it. Using a passphrase (25th word) is important but it won't be enough to stop someone who knows that you own a lot of bitcoins.

I still like to think my memory is reliable. Someone mentioned forgetting it within days, but I have known mine for the past 7 months ... it is not that hard. Of course there is a possibility in many years I will have forgotten it, so I do keep it written down and spread throughout the house (might actually use the dictionary one though). I do like the idea of the safe deposit box as an extra security measure. Had never heard of cryptosteel ... sounds interesting (though I prefer to have multiple wallets, and it might become expensive with that).

It's regular thing to see individuals putting away their seed in a place where it could be effortlessly taken note. I wouldn't encourage anybody to put their seed in bank's vault. For what reason would you give them duty of protecting your cash once more. You can keep your seed anyplace as long as you some way or another scramble it. Utilizing a passphrase is critical however it won't be sufficient to stop somebody who realizes that you claim a ton of bitcoins.

I personally keep that in an image , but it's not that simple to know what is it unless you have had some cryptography lessons , because i've had a ton of those .
And it's not in the image as per picture , it's in the code of that image randomly dispersed with the order changing whenever i re-open the image (perks of being a developer ) . I also keep a copy in the safe vault of my parents (even tho they think it's just my papers of identification and diplomas/degrees that i have collected through these years ) .
Keeping more than a copy of your safe phrase is a must especially if the amount is considerably important for you and you never know what can happen to that , so being extra careful won't hurt .

I'm not exactly specifying wherever I unbroken my 24-word seed state but I even have avoided potential risk therefore even on account of common cataclysms it will not influence my seed expression. Indeed, I concur with the method that one need to ne'er create any type of processed duplicate of that seed expression but maintaining enough written by hand reinforcement duplicates is adequate. i'd likewise order putt away such expression reinforcement duplicates in several geologic areas to remain off from any unintentional misfortune.

If you are going to store your seed phrase in a computer file then you better encrypt your hard drive or at least encrypt your file, and do not forget to create a backup just in case your hard drive breaks many people have made the mistake of not having a backup and when their hard drive crashes they lose all their coins forever without the possibility of recovering them.

Anyway how is someone going to hack my mind. For the pictures, they have been saved on 3 different drives and kept at three different locations.

Storing anything online is a big mistake, many people love cloud storage because they can get access to their files anywhere there is an Internet connection but this is just another way in which companies are trying to get your information and control you, people needs to stop giving up their rights for comfort, what you are doing is correct if you want to store your seed you need to do it locally and if possible avoid storing it in a digital device.

The best and most secure place to store you 24 word phrase is in your mind. I know it is long and hard to remember but it surely isn't impossible since you know it is very important. I don't know any secrets to memorize it faster but just try to think at the combination of those words and make them have sense.

Online is never a good place to store anything. Hackers break into absolutely anything. If they successfully broke into governments, NASA, FBI you think they can't break I to your Dropbox wallet that is secured just with your email? You got to be kidding here

You can keep the phrase on a piece of paper in your house as long as no one knows you have a big quantity of cryptos in your wallet. Same as Satoshi Nakamuto remains anonymous you should do the same because there will always be bad people try to fool or steal from you

You need to find something that works for you, something that is comfortable enough but something that is secure enough, personally I don't like either of your solutions, storing your seed words in an email is very insecure if you get hacked you are going to lose all your money, and storing your seed words in a book is a mistake as well, if someone were to rob your house one of the first things they will do is to check the books to see if there is money hidden in them and if they find your seed words then you lose your money.

Probably some of them still recomend this.

I just split my word by 6 and safe it to my wardrobe and one on my pocket. Of course i still have backup on my phone just in case. So, i dont know about bank deposit boxes.

Write some of words to paper and put it on your pocket. Lets say you remember 10 words (more is better) just write rest of 14 words on paper and keep it. Even if someone got this, they still need to find rest of your words.

I keep it on my home.

Probably, my first answer can help you with this.
I think its more safer in apple than android fone, either way you mentioned it great mate, this more reliable than what will i advice.

But i wanna share mine to,that i saved my phrases on a piece of paper like what OP said, but i give it to my wife to keep it for me,since im very careless on some things in my hands.though i guess you have no wife to share with lol

I don't understand why there are still people who want to keep their passphrase in a bank vault. If they really think that it's secure them then why do they use cryptocurrencies? There is always a possibility that bank won't allow you to access your safe. There are many ways to store your seed securely. Some people use additional computer which has no Internet connection, generate their seed there and encrypt it. Storing seed digitally is really convenient since you can create many copies and there is no way that someone hacks it.

Currently I store my 24 words in my bank vault, but I’m planning to tattoo them somewhere on my body.
It seems a bit extreme but I’m heavily tattooed so isn’t a problem for me make another one.

Many people really do not get the point of cryptocurrencies, for a significant number of investors cryptocurrencies are only a way to make money and nothing else, but for those that understand why bitcoin was created storing your seed in a bank makes no sense at all and that is why we are looking for other ways to store that information without relying on a third party.

The best method of storing your recovery seed is by actually writing it down on a piece of paper and storing it away somewhere safe, like a deposit box. It is completely ill advised to store your recovery seed on a note taking app, computer, cloud storage, Google Drive, or Dropbox due to the risk of your computer getting hacked and your seed stolen.

You can store safely your recovery phrase without the need for safes/deposit boxes if you write down the words scrambled following a specific rule. For example you can skip 2 words at a time and write the words in this order:

1 4 7 10 13 16 19 22 2 5 8 11 14 17 20 23 3 6 9 12 15 18 21 24

So if your pass phrase is the words: one two three four ... twenty-four you would store it as one four seven etc.

If later you need to find for example the fifth word you find the number 5 in the above sequence which is 10th so your fifth word is the 10th word in your paper

There are 24! possible orderings of 24 words. This is a number with 23 digits.

Obviously you need to remember the mnemonic rule to decode it later but this way you can safely store your scrambled seed phrase on your computer/dropbox etc without the need for safes and deposit boxes.

I have a photogenic memory so my back-up passwords and keys are all memorized. I am really lucky to posses this ability  and there is no way anyone can hack my wallets or accounts.

To address this, obviously you need to break it two pieces and store 2 copies of them, making it effectively 4 locations to store your 2 pieces and their backups.
Also, you can treat a physical device as the backup, in that way you would have a physical device in one location and two pieces of the 24-words (12 words each) in 2 additional locations.

Also, I engraved my seed pieces in copper, that is a good and secure way to store it.

How about to use cryptosteel, man?

Cryptosteel is the premier indestructible backup tool for optimal offline storage of private keys, passwords and wallet recovery seeds without any third-party involvement.

On the other hand, you can hold encrypted word file on your cloud drive (but don't forget password please).

I have a secured container created with Veracrypt a fork of Truecrypt. You can create as much as you need and recreate a new one if the previous one is out of space. Also, it's possible to select encryption alternative according to the performance of your machine. Some encryption methods take too much time to decrypt so it's better to test it before starting to use. You can have several copies of the container on multiple devices and secure them in secret places like a safe storage at yor office, house or a bank safe storage etc. It's also possible to encrypt a partition or a whole drive with Veracrypt.

Cryptosteel doesn't address the issues that were raised in the OP. It is just a way to store one backup piece. The OP were detailing some scenarios in which the backup is divided into parts and what happens when one of those parts is stolen or lost. Please read the OP (it is quite long) and please note that you would need a few cryptosteel backups to address all OP scenarios.

There are many ways to keep your 24 word phrase secure to avoid hacking and it depends on whichever one suits the individual. But I would prefer to get it saved in different  by partitions, e.g divide the words into 3-4-5 places either evenly or oddly and then keep them safe in different locations. A location I would prefer is  to have different emails which I don't use for any other thing online and save them their in different others.  E.g let's say your word phrase is 24, and you divide it into 6 places which is 4-4-4-4-4-4.
Now get emails : Yahoo mail, gmail, hotmail and co and send each 4 words alternately and make sure no mail has more than two phrase slot. With this, your wallet is free of hacking.

This method seems stressful but its really worth it. You have access to your wallet anywhere you go in the world in as much as you keep the passwords to the emails safe and different.

I think the safest storage of a phrase of 24 words - just write a phrase on a piece of paper and store it along with the documents. To date, it is dangerous to keep information on financial assets in media that are constantly connected to the Internet. Having a million dollars in a purse in ETH or BTC, I'll do a tattoo on my arm .... And seriously, there's absolutely no safe way to store 24 words of a phrase to restore a purse. Life constantly presents surprises, but I think it's necessary to take seriously things like security of keys and phrases from wallets with crypto coins. I myself am very interested in various ways to safely store important information. Therefore, I like this forum, that you can find all the answers here for any questions on the crypto-currency market.

Well, it is not a problem as long as somobody doesn't steal all your funds :) And you may not even know it, but somebody who had a minute access to your pc maybe have already copied the private keys and is just waiting for some time to pass so you will forget any coincidence leading you to him.

Actually I write it down in a place I know that no one would choose to look when looking for something like that and even if they find it they could never decipher it. Storing it on a phone or online is not an option. Storing your recovery phrase or private key online is a big mistake. You never know when some of these hackers will gain access to your account and use your information to steal the coins. Another risk is that you may loss access to these online accounts.

It is very important that we keep our keys safe. In my case, I store mine in a flash drive so that it is easier for me to copy paste it than do it manually to avoid mistakes of the number or alphabet being encoded. And I also keep a hard copy of, I write it in 2 separate notebooks and keep it somewhere safe.

Your strategy is so good. I think your way is more secured . I want to follow your strategy. It is also safe if it will be saved in a flashdrive and you keep it.

It is a good idea to write this on some piece of paper and put it in some case. No one will find this and check your wallet and steal your money. Computers not the same as about this situation.
