Title: Avoid Being Scammed Again
Post by: ArkiCrypto on March 25, 2018, 05:14:03 PM
I've seen many users complaining about being scammed by ICO projects most of them are new investors which probably gonna be the next generation of investors in cryptocurrency industry. I've been here in the cryptocurrency industry for a year and I've invested into different projects and seen how they disappear in the thin air, so to avoid this I want to share to you my criteria on choosing the right ICO or project to invest in.

This is not guaranteed but maybe in some point it may help you atleast to reduce the possibility on getting scammed by ICO's, the list below are my personal criteria how I choose Project to invest with using bitcoin or other cryptocurrency:

  • Check the Background of the team (If the team didn't give info about each member of the team such as name previous projects, background, etc. There's a possibility that they will just run away with your money if they didn't give info's about their team.)
  • Read their whitepaper and look if it's really worth to invest with, their concept, etc. (This is important to know what the project is all about.)
  • Check the Social media accounts, If you find it very interesting presentable. (Join their telegram group in order to be updated.)
  • Check the Projects professionalism (How they handle users, control frauds, etc.)
  • Follow their Roadmap and other technical details and see if they meet it on time.
  • Look for the projects community and see if the community is active.
  • Look for special proof and validation.
  • Do your own research about the project such as review about the projects or you can also check the projects ANN thread to see comments who's agree/disagree or the communities idea about the project because ANN threads is like an open forum where you can ask, give insights, etc.

I agree with this, Although this post may not be totally helpful but there are some things I learned from this. Just like what you've said there are some projects that looks very professionals, all the information was written, perfect whitepaper but ended up being a scam.

In investment the risk is always present so all we have to do is to be responsible in every investments/actions we're going to make.

Thanks for such informative post. Investment is all about taking risk. So every investor is responsible for his/her own decision.

I totally agree to the points you listed and the fact that people should invest only what they are ready to loose.

That one aspect of ICO projects which can be good or bad depending of the side you look at it. On one hand, we can see great projects at their development states and anyone can be part of it quite easily and on the other end, it could all vanish instantely.

Is there any token based project running at the moment or only speculation with the tokens?

I really appreciate your effort for putting this points together. But sadly, it's easy to say than to execute. Now the scammers have also evolved their techniques. They plan a lot in advance so it has become very hard to spot a fake social media profile. The attributes mentioned in the website can be sourced from a professional content writer which again becomes very tough to spot any anamolies.

It is little easier to spot a fake ICO projects through their twitter activities. I have seen a lot of ICO projects those who tweet about only their projects with a lot of jargons and copied text from their website. Only a handful of them post about their real pictures and their team members. Once you see an ICO is continuously posting about their participation in various crypto summits and their tours and sales pitches, you can at least trust that they are not fake and genuinely trying to get better attention.

I usually use this determination factor before joining any bounty program.

Thank you this is really helpful. If people would only spend a little extra in checking what they are investing in it would lessen the number of people being scammed by shady icos. If you are already a victim in the past just consider it as experience and learn from it. Hopefully in the future you will find real good legit icos. Just always be aware and if possible if you spot something fishy share it to as many people as you know because helping one another could also be a factor so that people would not be scammed too.

It is sad that many investors got scammed by some ICO's. because of this too, some social media banned the ICO ads.
i think we as an investor must be clever to choose the ICO's by learning deeply through their project and their team before investing.
i usually trust ICO if there are some amazix peoples manage that ICO. The key to avoid scam is, never invest to half-baked project.

They're getting scammed just only because they never check very carefully the whitepaper which means they actually didn't know what is that project about? All they know is just a name and their money , that's all.

I agree. the scammers are evolving, using new trends in order to make their project look more legit that's why I opened up this thread in order for us to grow also. Share the new techniques they're using, sharing knowledge we've all got in regards with this topic and help each other to counter it as a community.  :)

This is also one of the things that I pay attention to when I check an ICO. Joining in conferences, summits, meet-ups makes me more confident that they are not just there to take away our money but they are serious with the project. Seeing the faces of the people behind the project and promoting their project to people in these meetings aside from promoting actively online makes it more trustworthy to the investors. I also look at the social media accounts of the ICOs if they are active because it makes the investors more excited and confident knowing what they are doing behind the scenes and what are their progress.

Good thing that this topic has been brought up in this forum. Sadly, as we continue looking for ways to prevent this from happening and be a victim of scam, scammers are also upgrading their styles and ways to continue targetting everyone. Scammers target people from all backgrounds, and we are all vulnerable to this. What to do is to be alert and aware that scam exists, know what and who you're dealing with, and keep personal data secure.

All good points but how many individuals to you think actually do that and put in the work? Hardly any, and that is why scams continue to happen because people are simply too lazy to do work yet want easy money. Scams will never stop working for this exact reason, people are just too dumb in general to work for what they want.

this serves as a great tool to spot a scam, because of some greedy users, that wants a quick and easy way to earn but ended up being scammed, fhey did not bother to thoroughly investigate before venturing on a specific project, maybe next time, do not be easily fooled by some too good to be true schemes and it is best to ask someone on that project or get more info before you venture on them.

If I see an ICO that gives me 3 reasons when I visit their page then it will be decided directly, these redflags are a.) the developers are anonymous b.) The token doesn't have a clear user case c.) the road map is vague and nowhere to go.
There are lots of ICO that are now said to be scam while the have those attributes, but then I couldn't care less so I am deciding to take a rest from those and just buy at a small amount depending on what I have and what are the said tokens were. That way I will take less damage when the coin will fail.

Nice inputs. Being cautious is the basic step to avoid scams. We always should know whom we are investing to, what their white paper says and what their project is. Some background checking if possible helps to gather knowledge. Helpful post, Thanks.

I always tell people not to participate in ICOs if they do not know the faces of the people in charge and also without doing proper research into the project and just going by their twitter and social media profiles. A lot of them are scammers.

Yes doing the right process of research specially about each members background is impprtant because for me it's going to be the foundation of the project. Let's say the project's concept is perfect but the team who's going to built it is not as solid as a concrete. Then it will probably crash or that project will end up being a scam.

Most of the ICO project has telegram group to communicate all the person who wants to invest with them and they do not send any personal message to individual to invest with them then to be safe you should ignore all the personal message came from strangers that who claimed that they are one of the admin of one ICO, if you have doubt in the project much better to stay away with them dont send money to other people who are not attached or not part of the team of the ICO.

I have already experienced this buying ICO projects then after the ICO nothing happen,  the developers are running. Their social media are no longer been updated. My friend told me its now a scammed, Lesson learn, I was too greedy to invest without reading the content of the projects. I was invited by that project. For me, It is better to work here, joining some bounties, signature campaign and everything that can earn bitcoins from our hard work done.

I would say that this is a roulette for today ... Even with a professional team, you can lose time, for example, the project does not collect enough money for the next stage - the result is a stoppage of the project and distribution of their hard money to investors (at best) in the worst case of money just disappear. There are a lot of nuances and with an accuracy of 100% you nick

I think we all experience getting scam but i guess if you know already bitcoin works it wilk surely be a thing because as bitcoin continue its journey we already know that it gives us a big profit as we invest but not investing in othrr platform but in the sence of buying tokens or bitcoin thisbis where we could get a big profit also we cant get a 20percent up gain easily.

Thanks a lot for  this helpful post. I am certain this will guide a number of people henceforth. I have learnt my lessons and in fact, I don't see myself going near any lending ico again because they don't provide team information and make unrealistic promise.

Thankyou for providing such a great information like this. I hope this will help all the newbies in this cryptocurrency world that want to start investing their money, but afraid of the scams that's been happening recently.
The articles you stated also gave me a lot of new information, and i hope it will be useful so i won't get scammed again in the future.
But still, we all know they're just theories, and won't really ensure that we won't get scammed again. But it's better to be knowledgeable and careful rather than know nothing at all, right?

Yes you're right we aren't sure that we won't get scammed again because the scammers are also improving their strategies on how they will scam that's why there's no such thing as safe investment in cryptocurrency industry you will need to have guts in order to earn profit here but after all even though it's not enough not to be scammed again it's still better if we have at least basic knowledge about how they scam or how to avoid them right?

Too many ICO these days and too many scam projects looking for people to run away with their funds. The scaming of ICO is already getting heated and getting worse daily. Though i don't blame them, after all ICO is place to pack peoples money just that giving them shit of load crap which you drafted in your bedroom. Some ICO scams are very crafty that you won't even see them coming. Even after doing all the research needed. My advice is just invest what you can afford to lose in any project and trust none of them.

I agree but in some points, almost all ICO projects are professionally the same with their presentation.  It is really up to all of us which one are we going to choose or should I say taking the risk to invest with.  And yes, research will give you a big point.

There are lots of safety precautions to avoid being scammed but there are still some people that got scammed because of unexpected issues like legit site suddenly turned scammed, or serious and legit project suddenly disappeared. Just really need to be more careful.

This information is really helpful. But despite being careful, it is really hard to identify which ICO is scam or not. They are really good at disguising which anyone would thought that it is really a good company where in reality they are scams.

They're getting scammed just only because they never check very carefully the whitepaper which means they actually didn't know what is that project about? All they know is just a name and their money , that's all.
Sometimes a lot of projects use fake whitepaper. I only checked whitepaper for reference purposes. Mostly I will evaluate the projects through the community

It seems to me that scam projects are a little bit fewer and farther between in 2018 than they were in 2017. Thoughts?

This actually really helps. Though some of us already knew these considerations before getting in such projects. That situation is really usual and really happens in this industry. It is our responsibility to study further anything we want to enter specially if there's money and effort involved.

It is very hard to determine If the ICO is a scam or not because some scammer is very professional too and really also invest to make their ICO look like real.

In order not to be scammed again, you need to choose the reliable ICO project. I would like to recommend you to try USECHAIN, it is definitely not a scam. If you are interested, then have a closer look at it here https://www.usechain.net/.

There are some very professional looking projects, all the information was written, perfect whitepaper but in the end a scam.
In investment, risk is always present, so all we have to do is take responsibility for every investment / action we take.

Your post shows us how much work and research you would have done to make this post. I appreciate your hardwork brother.
It is indeed hard sometimes to differentiate between a genuine ICO and a scam ICO. Also, there are some ICOs which people create just to scam others and there are some genuine ICOs as well which scam the people at the end and run away with their money. Those are the difficult ones to identify.
This post can help a lot of investors to prevent themselves from investing into such scam ICOs.

What I mean by that is to always double check to verify to continually ask questions and try to figure put for yourself the truth. If something is more than what it appears or if anything seems farcetched and too easy to attain then for me that is a sign that this is a scam and almost too good to be true which means it should be a no for me.

I've been scam for many times. And I have learned that in all my ways. So it's good to see how good ICO will be. One of our need to know whether legitimate and true is legitimate is to see their transparency. We can see immediately if they are the most visible faces on their websites, whitepapers and social media accounts

However, now, many scam projects are very smart. They can play neatly and without arousing suspicion. Probably the same as normal ICO. The ICO scam also has a structured and systematic framework to deceive its devotees. And this is really creepy. I sometimes still hesitate to invest. As a solution, I had a discussion with my friends about the project.

Well, I think the point is to be able to deepening everything related to a certain project from time to time and learn from many experiences also not easy to believe.

Linkedin may be really helpful in your research whereas you can see the team members background and when their profile was made also if they had some known connections as well as recommendations.

If you are on a personal connection, like at home, you can run an anti-virus scan on your device to make sure it is not infected with malware. If you are at an office or shared network, you can ask the network administrator to run a scan across the network looking for misconfigured or infected devices.Another way to prevent getting this page in the future is to use Privacy Pass.

A few years ago I was willing to contribute to translation project and when I came across a certain project, I applied for translation program. Later I spent almost 6 hours to complete the translation of their announcement topic along with the graphic design of new language topic. Within a month I realized that I did a mistake by not doing enough research before applying because that project was recognized as a scam and everyone lost their money including me (as I lost my worthless bounty rewards).

I totally agree on you, Ive been scammed many times and many of those you mention are the things I failed to do. Finding a good project really demands a lot of things to consider and lot of reading to take. Reviews and background information about team's previous work will make a clearer idea on what legit project is. Most of the project available are making scam, the above is a good guide to look at when from finding a better project.

Thanks for such informative post. Investment is all about taking risk. So every investor is responsible for his/her own decision.

I agree with you! We are all aware that investment really take risks so being scammed by others is a consequence of it if you really not look into the background of the one who you're investing with. The given statement of the creator of this thread is helpful yet we don't know what, when, where the scam will take place so I suggest  please be extra careful when you put your money into something and be strategic and wise in performing plan.

Yes now the scammers have also developed their technique. They plan so many things beforehand so it becomes very difficult to find a fake social media profile. The attributes mentioned on the website can be sourced from a professional content writer who returns to a very difficult to see name. Many investors are tricked by some Ico. because of this too, some social media prohibit Ico ads. I think you as an investor must be good at choosing Ico by studying in depth through their project and their team before investing. I usually believe Ico if there are some amazix people who manage Ico.

Yeah, you have a point every investments are risky, although you know that person by the information in the internet but you still dont know its real identity, so if I were on you just be smart on picking where you will invest your money.

You got some really great points for preventing people from getting scammed. Team is the key here. If team doesn't really have any background, it is most likely a scam. Many fake ICO even use stock images as a team member. This can be easily identified through image finder. Always do a thorough analysis of the project you are investing in. Never invest because of hype or someone suggested to invest. Because ultimately you are responsible for your investment decisions.

It is very common these day for project to make outrageous claims that they have raised some million to create a sense of importance and thus lure investors, SO I will add that one should also check their contract address to see their funds received or claimed to have received. The nature of transaction on the account can tell a lot about the owners.

In essence a person needs to learn self regulation as this industry is not centralized and no entities that are regulating potential projects that you would want to invest or participate into. Even in the stock exchange market there is only a certain degree of regulation as investors can still lose money.

This is a great plan to action if you want to become an investor or just take part in a bounty company but can not decide how to choose a project. But I should note that sometimes, even if you carefully check the project, as described here, you can still stumble upon scams, but this action plan will reduce your risk to a minimum.

Just gaining information won't keep you safe. Sometimes just using common sense will help you doge a huge potential scam. Stupidity is what leads to people getting scammed or hacked. Just be careful about what you do and think twice before you attempt to do something.

This post is very helpful for all the prize hunters as well as the investors. we all know that engaging in crypto is very risky and this is a great way to give us enlightenment about a possible possibility. I will try to be more selective and aware, then not easy to believe in the network especially when you do not know who the maker is.

It's almost becoming normal to hear people cry of scam these days, and it's become tiring. I really do wish there's something urgent and effective that can be done towards preventing these scammers from carrying out their job. I would advise that people be weary of the sites and airdrops or bounties they involve themselves in. Be careful of the ads you allow on your browser too, you can never be too sure. Also, never share your personal data with anyone you meet over the internet or someone you do not trust.

Yes this is very informative. I am also one of those who experienced being scammed by ICOs, and I have learned my lesson. Yes, it is indeed helpful for us to check everything about the ICO before investing in it and joining its bounty campaigns. Each and everyone of us must be very keenful in choosing which ICO to invest or join.

There is no way we will have a market this big, over $300 billion  and not have scammers in the space. Most people who got scammed are either greedy and fail to see the obvious. I could remember when here on this forum Bitconnect were called scam, some people stand up for them defending the Ponzi and we all know how that ends. Read and research the project

That is the fastest way.

In terms of prevention though, what he said will be good pointers to consider. Do not just jump into the hype. Research and do it over and over.
Check their social media. There might be clues there for legitimacy checking. You are fighting pro scammers so better be pro in digging who they are.

Your exposure is quite helpful for us, so we have a broader perspective on ICO. Investment does have a big risk, but if we can conquer it, there will be a very big result that we can get it. And some mistakes from getting stuck in our scam ICO do not make us regret and resign. There is much science that we can get from the mistakes we have experienced, to be more careful again in choosing ICO.

Nonetheless, now, many trick ventures are exceptionally keen. They can play conveniently and without exciting doubt. Presumably the same as should be expected ICO. The ICO trick likewise has an organized and orderly structure to cheat its enthusiasts. Furthermore, this is extremely unpleasant. I here and there still delay to contribute. As an answer, I had a discourse with my companions about the venture.

the scam is to be overcome. When it is not able to resolve this or are not capable of analyzing the existing ICO scam then I think investors will not get the results they want. as a result, it is natural when currently many ICO could not succeed because it does not have investors and insufficient in their sales targets. at least the analysis will help though not a guarantee can be entirely able to avoid scam.

Good advice, way too many people are too relaxed when it comes to protecting their coins and if you have not been scammed before then you will not know how painful it is to get your coins stolen from you. Always make sure that you are following accurate security measures when it comes to the access and usage of your coins and your wallet because you don't know who might be lurking

As if we have not yet avoided it, it will still be the case that people will simply begin to use what you do not know and will be deceived several times. We definitely need services to identify scam. This will probably be the right decision.
