If in USA 6870 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102948)  ;)
Otherwise, prices may vary outside the US!

5830 wouldn't be better than the 6870?

For price it is! But, it's currently unavailable at the egg!
A 5850 would be better too! But, again...

I bought this 5870 brand new from NewEgg for $189 two weeks ago when they became in-stock briefly: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161331

Just be patient and keep an eye out for deals which pop up every now and then.

Yes, at current difficulty level.
Is there any chance for bitcoins to go down in difficulty in the future or will it always remain going up

Yes... 5830's are 129.99 @ newegg and are going to get around 300mh.  My 6870 tops out around 286 and costs 40-50 more

ncix us also has 5850's in stock for $145 i believe until tomorrow.

It's possible that it could go down. if the total hashrate were to decrease, the difficulty would have to decrease as well to maintain the desired rate of bitcoin creation.

so yeah, it's possible, but realistically I don't see it happening any time soon.

The price at NCIX is back up to 170 (CAD), but they are in stock and that is still probably about the best card for the money if you want to buy right now. These will do 350-400+ Mhps at stock voltage, and they are very efficient (about 150w). Great card.

the only way it would be a waste of money is if bitcoins collapse before you mine enough to pay off your card. if we assume that bitcoin will survive for at least the next year you *should* make profit from your card - eventually.

just ballpark figures and napkin math here, but...

lets say for $190 you could get a card that does around 300 MHash/sec (very conservative estimate)

using deepbit's calculator you could expect to make 0.16 BTC per day..

as of right now mtgox has BTC at 13.7 so you would pay off your card in 86.7 days.

p.s. these calculations depend on the price of BTC and the change in difficulty.

p.p.s. I didn't add electricity into the equation. I don't pay for electricity, so I have no idea how much that might add to your costs.  :P

^^ while technically correct, this is probably NOT the line of logic you want to follow.  If we all followed this advice, the early adopters (you know, the ones mining hundreds and sometimes thousands of Bitcoins per DAY) should have just shut their machines down and quit mining since it would have taken them 20+ YEARS to pay off their machines.
