Title: Looking for a rig frame
Post by: Verde on March 29, 2018, 02:17:50 PM
Hello there, I am looking for some proven rig frames. I use now a home made ones from a plastic containers and they are terrible for component maintenance and just a simple movement with it is a pain. Looking for something durable, easy to build, for 6 graphic cards, for less than 100 €. Any suggestions?

There you go mate :D the price is 45Euros, give or take some cents. I do not know how much you would pay for the delivery, but the frame looks really good for this price and seems to be out of steel or aluminium.

You can build the BBT 6 GPU open air mining frame below for about $40 out of two 8ft pieces of 1/8" x 3/4" angled aluminum, one 8 ft 1" x 3" piece of pine, one 4ft 1" x 1" piece of pine and #8 1/2" self-tapping screws. You can also build it out of all wood if you want to save some money.

6 GPU Frame (Dimension 21" W x 15 3/4"" D x 10 3/4" H):

Build Cuts:

For the Angled Aluminum:

-First 8ft (96") Angled Aluminum; .75 inch of waste

4x 15 3/4" cuts (63" use) (Case Depth)
3x 10 3/4" cuts (32.25" use) (Case Height)

-Second 8ft (96") Angled Aluminum; 1.25 inch of waste

4x 21" cuts (84" use) (Case Width)
1x 10 3/4" (10 3/4" use) (Case Height)

And for the wood:

-8ft 1x3 Pine (96"); 2 inch of waste:

6 cuts of 15 3/4" (94" use) (Case Bottom)

-4 ft 1x1 Pine (24" left over):

1 cut of 21" (21" use) (Card Bracket Support)

Sorry mate, cant advise you here on your question, because I'm using for my rigs old home made design from wood)
So far it was proven actually quite well. durable. cheap. can be replicated and repaired if needed, I'm quite ok with that

Hello, I think you can do everything with your own hands:
- aluminum corners
- a couple of sheets of dsp for criminals
- Straight arms
- Any mock-up of their internet
and everything is in your hands!!

I think you just build your self, an open air frame rig is the best option for me, because it's very cheap with about 25$, very easy to build, convenient for maintenance and movement. For example, most of my rigs look like this:

If you want something look cool, this frame cost around 65$. But I personally dont really like this frame, to build it, I think it may take few hours while I just need to spend 10 minute to make above frame.

Check out Spotswood's frames if you want to purchase something that is ready to assemble.

Or if you don't mind paying a premium for what I believe is the nicest frame on the market, check out this seller on eBay.

You could fit 6 rigs on one of these, I use it for 4 though. Just cut out some plyboard for the base and hang your gpus using cable ties or string. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KCGL4PW/ (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KCGL4PW/)

If you are handy you can build yourself pretty easy but if you are like me who isnt the best at building frames but can figure out how to build computers there are a few options out there.

I have one of these and I love the quality and customer service.

The price on these Veddha frames has dropped almost to the materials would cost to make one.  Used to be around $200 now they are only in the upper 70s shipped. https://amzn.to/2GEzTMo (https://amzn.to/2GEzTMo)

Im lazy and I went with the Veddha v3c.  one unit will hold 6 gpu's, motherboard and 2 power supplies.  Two stacked will do 13-15 gpu's if you add a second mounting rail.  Thats what im running.  2 rigs with 2 v3c's  stacked and a Asus B250 mining expert motherboard.

Thats pretty much how I build my rigs it cost $25 at home depot for the aluminum I cut it to size drill and rivet it takes me about 20 mins and maintenance is easy I blow my cards and motherboard out every other week because everything is so easy to get to

I use just basic homemade wooden shelves, cost me around €30 in wood + screws + electronics (switch, pdu, wiring and remote switches) per 6 rig module. Usually accompanied by 2 or 3 big fans which are ~€10 each, depending on location.

Yep, that's the one I linked to on eBay.  We have 5 of his frames and they are extremely well made.

Also consider talking to @Spotswood

I just ordered a frame for my Onda B250 D8P from him.  Phillipma has done a review on his rig frames as well.

+1 for spotswood. The qualit of craftsmanship is beyond anything you will ever get to build as an amateur. It will probably also save you all the headache associated with missing or non-match parts when you order some cheap quality racks.

But in any case, isn't it too late to be buying racks?

If you know how to handle tools then 3-5 meters of 20x20 T-slot or V-slot aluminum profile plus some screws and brackets, couple hours of work (incl. cutting to size) - and you're all set.

yep;  agreed.

I have a bunch of aluminum c and L channel stock, and a riveter.   I am just too damned lazy and want something with less headache myself ;)

Lazy I can understand, I'm lazy myself, too :) But on the other hand paying $180-200 for something that costs $40-50 to make, especially this simple, helps fight laziness :)

If you are paying anything much over $100 then you are paying too much.  I just scored another Veddha v3c on ebay for $57 shipped.  That puts me to 4 of them and 2 stacked will cover one Asus B250 Mining expert motherboard and 13 GPU's and even more if you can find P106 cards.

I'm not paying even $100 as I prefer to assemble my 8 card rigs myself. What kind of man can't handle an angle grinder and a screwdriver?

One that does all his own vehicle maintenance from tranny rebuilding, PCM diagnosis, Brakes to engine rebuild along with ALL home maintenance including roofing, HVAC install, repair, maintain and someone that owns 5 acres and has more important things to do than piss around trying to "save" $50.  Time is worth money to me.  Id rather be fishing or hunting than nickel and diming life to death.  Who does all your stuff while you are pissing away time over $50?

You can find a lot of nice frame on ebay
https://www.ebay.com/sch/Miners/179171/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=frame&_sop=15
But it all depands on what you want to get and what money you can pay for it, the quickest way is to find a  local "gold hand" person who will made such frame for you and then you will decide what exacly you want and how much money you can pay for him for this work( i made it this way, cause i wanted to be made good with solid and stable frame  to pick and move anytime i want)

Wrong assumption. It's not about pissing away time, it's doing something enjoyable and not time consumable. Being busy with all the roof and tranny stuff you might not realize that, besides I doubt you enjoy rebuilding transmissions. I certainly don't, unless it's a sequential gearbox I have on my rally car. But cars are offtopic here :)

I used extruded aluminium rod (T-slot).

Its strong, sturdy and can be built with just an allan key. The slots allow easy fitting of attachments and joiners such as feet, handles, hinges, fans etc. Most suppliers will cut your order to size if you dont have an angle grinder. As no drilling or riveting is needed, you can take the rig apart to extend or modify very easily.

I build mine out of wood every time.

32mm X 12mm and it costs £4 in materials + £0.50 in screws and glue.

That way I can easily modify where each GPU is positioned to without the need of heavy duty machinery.
