Just like saying a telephone number, a common place for everyone. They are easy to say and memorize. By contrast, to say a raw bitcoin address orally, is difficult and will not stick. TV/Radio advertisements, for instance could use this protocol rules to tell a bitcoin address in a quick and efficient way, that could be really difficult to forget. And that's ignoring the fact that the original rules make no sense. Make words uppercase? Lowercase? There are no words in bitcoin addresses unless it's a vanity address. How did everything wind up uppercase? Oi.
