Title: PSU for 6 5850s
Post by: release on July 27, 2011, 10:30:08 PM
What would be the minimal wattage required to run 6 5850s? Also, what power supply would you recommend? I'd prefer buying from Tigerdirect over Newegg because I'd have to pay tax on Newegg.

Max TDP is 188W for each of these from AMD's design specs. That would be the worst case scenario.

6 5850's... if they are going to be OC'ed you need more than 1250, I run a Antec PSU 1250w with 4x5850's OC'ed 900/300 and man does it eat power (reading from Kill-a-watt).

So you need at least at 1500w or more PSU at least from my experience to run Optimally. Keeping in mind you still need to power the Motherboard, RAM, and CPU and potentially fans to keep it all cool.

how much does the killawatt meter read with your 4 5850s?
Also, i know of 3 antec 1200 psus but no 1250. can you link which PSU you are using?

according to GPUreview, the 188W TDP is for the 5870. The 5850 has a TDP of 158W.

Ahh whoops ya its a 1200w my bad, the PSU I am using is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371032

Its reading 117.2 volts from the Kill-a-watt

Volts? What's your wattage? That's what i'm interested in.

Sorry wasn't paying attention there.. about 890 it says on my Kill-a-watt so I am utilizing about 74% of the PSU, Optimal is 80%

actually, if you're using 890 on the meter, the components are only using about 770W due to efficiency so 1200w should be more than enough to cover for 6 5850s.

Huh never thought of it that way (efficiency), always just took the watts for what it was.... Well either way I am glad I could help

Happy Mining

To run 1,300 watts at 80% efficiency you'd need a 1625 watt power supply. I suppose you might find one somewhere, but it's bound to be expensive. I would go with (2) good 850's or higher.

5850 cards average 171 watts, so that's 1026W continuous just for the GPU. Add in 40 watts for CPU, some for RAM and cooling, etc... I think that's pushing a 1,200 watt supply too hard. I wouldn't doubt that it can be done though.

If I were going with a single supply and (6) cards I'd probably get the 1,500 watt Silverstone supply then. That should do nicely. Or you can get an adapter cable from cablesaurus that joins two power supplies on 1 mobo. OK, sorry I keep editing.

You should consider to use 2 similar 600-800-1000W PSU! You would only need one such cable:

Dual PSU 24-Pin Adapter Cable (https://cablesaurus.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=22)

25 dollars for that? What a scam. A paper clip lying around the house to jump the green and a black pin is more than adequate.
