Title: Where exactly can you use bitcoins?
Post by: mute20 on July 28, 2011, 05:48:33 AM
I am a bit curious where people use bitcoins? Specially when they say that they fully covered the cost of there system?

When people say they recovered the cost of their system, they mean that they mined enough bitcoins and sold them on an exchange like www.mtgox.com or www.tradehill.com for enough dollars to recoup the cost of the hardware.

As far as where you can spend bitcoins, other than converting them into dollars, check here:  http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade (http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade)

I keep on wondering about the real size of the economy besides the speculation.

I think the big speculative bubble has passed now and BitCoins have settled at a steady level. You won't see it shooting up above $20 anytime soon ;),  just as well  8)

There also shops that sell real goods, not only money exchangers. The real economy isn't that big yet, but it's growing. uploaded.to for example has announced that they will accept Bitcoins as payment soon. On spendbitcoins.com for example you can indirectly shop on Amazon and buy your new mining rig or books with bitcoins.
And I sell other goods that bring you pleasure, see signature.

Yup, but I still hope I can see a quantitative estimation of the size of this economy someday.

That's going to be a while. Right now it's growing at a pretty fast rate. I try to add at least one site a day to The Bitcoin List and I feel I'm still behind the curve.

But I think you should at least have some ideas about the rough scale of it? Like in millions of dollars or thousands of dollars?

I haven't seen any bitcoin based businesses volunteer any specifics regarding income and I somehow doubt that will change.

Yeah I saw that once or twice too. I knew someone that bought something using bitcoins on Craigslist, but i think it was a small item.

I'm getting ready to offer a service I think will be helpful for the bitcoin community. I'll announce it on the projects thread shortly.

I think that right now the best place to spend BTC would be in real life with someone who uses BTC well, as in personal exchanges.

Can you please add http://loja.pmakordeoneditora.pt to The Bitcoin List?

Thanks!

Done! http://www.thebitcoinlist.com/listing/pm-akordeon-editora/

In case any other merchants want to be added, the Contact Page (http://www.thebitcoinlist.com/contact-us/) is probably a more appropriate way to ask.
