Title: TLS error
Post by: theymos on April 08, 2018, 03:19:12 AM
Sorry about the TLS error downtime. What happened was that I used to have separate certs for bitcointalk.org and *.bitcointalk.org, but I forgot that I combined them last time, so when I renewed *.bitcointalk.org, I didn't update the certificate on the bitcointalk.org server. And I have Cloudflare's strict TLS enforcement enabled, so it just killed the connection as soon as it expired.

Is *.bitcointalk.org actually used for anything? I don't recall ever using a subdomain on the forum.

ip.bitcointalk.org is the image proxy.

 - Prior to last year, ip.bitcointalk.org and beta.bitcointalk.org used *.bitcointalk.org, while bitcointalk.org used its own cert.
 - As of last year (which I'd forgotten about), bitcointalk.org and ip.bitcointalk.org use *.bitcointalk.org, while beta.bitcointalk.org uses its own cert.

I was surprised at the downtime because it's never been down since I joined this great forum; your explanation really helps.

It is for testing of the new forum software.

Kind Regards

I wonder if people that are talking trash in other non public channels are going to voice their opinions here

I understand now with above explanation, this is happened once in this forum as I joined here. Quite surprisingly what is being happened, I guessed that perhaps it is related with spam :D. Hope later there is news, notice or announcement before shutdown the servers or any others for planned maintenance or something else for users awareness in this forum. Except if the occurrence is out of planning

Is this twitter handle official https://twitter.com/bitcointalk?
It looks official but why it's inactive since 30 Nov 2017?

This can be helpful for announcements or any such unforeseen events.

He forgot to renew it, how can you expect theymos to announce something on twitter while just knowing about it, would have resulted in fixing the problem? if you are not satisfied with an apology, I could send alia to your bed next.

hahaha no way not questioning theymos not at all!!! i was just wondering if there is an official twitter account for bitcointalk.org or of theymos himself. Just to keep in touch, but found both accounts inactive for ages.

and regarding the offer can we talk on PM :)

That is the official twitter handle, but I only tend to use it for long-lasting outages that I can't quickly fix. I don't use Twitter otherwise, so you're not going to see any more regular news, etc. from there.

We might taught that this site was already down with this kind of error, :) but luckily I didn't experienced this. Great work THEYMOS, for fixing this as soon as possible to prevent any more conflicts during this rundown time. :)
I hope the new forum will be launched as early as possible to eliminate the large number of toxics that keeps on lurking around this old forum of ours.

Obviously, I have been active here more than you and I have wondered if this site is always up and running. I guess you have withnessed many going on maintenance for hours but I didn't even notice this if not that I saw this thread.

Surely Theymos is prompt if it requires his response but if it does not require his comment, he never waste his time  :-*
