Title: new mining rig - asrock 970 extreme4 can go triple crossfire? 5850
Post by: goemon888 on July 29, 2011, 07:34:05 PM
I'm building something like this... any advice?

PSU - Corsair HX-850 850W 6x 6+2pin - it's ok? http://tinyurl.com/3egwafb
Case - Antec 300
CPU - Amd Am3 Athlon II 250
Ram - 2x2 gb 1333 Corsair
Hd - WD 500 blue

MOBO - Asrock 970 extreme4 - can go triple crossfire? http://asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=970%20Extreme4
The bottom pci-ex 16 slot have enough space for dual slot GPU?
(or need this? gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 +30euro)

GPU - Asus 5850 top x3

700 euro shipped

(or PSU Corsair TX650 - MOBO gigabyte 970 dual pciex - 2 GPU (530 euro shipped)

i would go with a more powerful power supply like 1000+ and this mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130274

That way you can add up to 5 pcie16 slots with risers for future video cards

also open air instead of a case for mining alone seems to produce the best temps.

I'll comment on the PSU since I own that exact same one. It's a stud, plenty for 3 X 5850's.

I have mine running 2 x 5870's and a 6950.

Hi mate,

I have the Z68 Extreme4, and the bottom pcie slot won't fit a dual slot card.   You'd need to use a riser.

if the bottom slot does or not is up to your case(the case does have a bottom) get one with 8 expansion slots you'll be fine otherwise go caseless. as far as crossfire is concerned it's determental to mining performance.

therefore this card will not work?

Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3

It mandatary a 3-Way AMD CrossFireX support?
this expensive motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5

a sistem with 2 5850 Crossfire is about 550 euro, a 3way almost 800

you just plug your 3 video cards into the PCIEx16 slots... no crossfire cables needed as it works better to not have them set up in crossfire for bitmining..... you may need some dummy plugs or have them all plugged into a monitor though.

do not worry about crossfire support

just pointing out the price of those 2 Gigabyte motherboards is pretty close to the MSI GDFXA-GD70 which is a very good board
