You're obviously wrong, OP - just look at their advertisement on their front page...

"We're always on. Buy and sell Bitcoin 24/7/365 with the world's most sophisticated trading platform."

As you know, there are NEVER any issues with the Gox trading engine. Never ever.

My buddy woke up one morning a few weeks ago to $1,600 USD worth of Bitcoins wiped clean from his Gox account.

Transferred out to another address.

Gox just shrugged their shoulders and told him he should've enabled the Google Authy thinga-ma-gig ...

Click cancel the normal way.  That cancellation will go in the queue still even though it is delayed

I think the trading engine has halted temporarily due to technical problems.

I've left something like .05 BTC to the tender mercies of Mt. Gox.

OTOH, I was gloating about withdrawing 'all' my BTC from Bitcoinica like a month or so before they took their bail-out.  My balance was like 3 BTC or something which at the time was effectively nothing.  Now it's like $1000 and it's starting to piss me off a bit.

FWIW, I had had a very lucky winning streak in my experiments and donated the bulk of my balance to some charity in Thailand that ~goat knew of so I didn't have to consider it in taxes and what-not.
