Title: RAM Drive Servers
Post by: gbeirn on August 02, 2011, 04:15:27 PM
Would people be interested in renting pre-configured servers for IRC, FTP, just SSH or basically whatever you want where the server OS runs strictly from a RAM drive?
You let us know what packages you want installed, if any, we setup the basics and you take it from there. You would be responsible for getting any data onto or off of the machine via the Internet. No logs or persistent data would be kept after a system reboot.

You could rent the server for as little as an hour or for weeks or more. Pay for only the time you need. Once you are done, simply shutdown the machine.

What would people pay for something like this?

Sure, but can't people set up a cloud server from SoftLayer or something and do this themselves.

Plus, the only reason to use a ram drive is for many small server transactions -- high traffic database/web server.   Not the applications you mentioned.  Size is also the biggest downside.  Sure you can get 64GB ram cloud servers out there, but they are pretty expensive and 64GB is small by most database standards.  Large PCIe SSDs is the way to go but multiple RAID 0 SATA3 SSDs are great as well.
