The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has launched “The Hope Page” - a website that mines cryptocurrency with the help of visitors' computer processing power. The site will allow Australians to provide help and hope to vulnerable children by simply opening the page while they are online.

UN related services are now using cryptocurrencies, interesting. I would prefer if they put solar panels in Australia and mine cryptocurrencies with it rather than using coinhive.

At the same page, i found interesting news too "blockchain was approximately 10% of AMD revenue in the first quarter of 2018" and "Samsung Reports Q1 Profit Record due to Mining Chips".

They choose to follow the easiest way to make a few bucks without people feeling that they lose anything of monetary value. I don't think they will ever try to actually set up solar based rigs or mini farms for that purpose.

It's too much effort and would require them to hire people to keep monitoring everything, which costs money too aside from all the hardware. Why doing that when you can just sit back and see money come in like this?

I honestly wouldn't even want a charity to actually start getting involved in mining. The main incentive is to raise gifts and income from selling merchandise. The more they earn, the more goes to top board members.

These charities spend more money on marketing and their board members than the actual purposes they raise money for.

They do really have the capability if they wanted to but same as you said why would bother themselves into too much technical things if they would able to gain money by just sitting around but well when it comes to money making it would be lesser but come to think of that they do have traditional options which they do able to raise money without depending to crypto.Its just a small alternative but a good idea since it can raise awareness on cryptocurrencies existence.

A charity for children doesn't have the job to raise cryptocurrency awareness, if they do, they could simply accept donations in several well known cryptos rather than using coinhive and cpu mining.

Come to think of it, a charity that claims that it's helping children on basis of Hope, is raising money through direct means of destroying the world that these children will be living in when they grow up. Oh the irony! those 1500 visitors contributing power could simply allow UNICEF itself to run a few ASICs and be good and energy efficient at gaining revenue for charity's work, means much more environmentally friendly than ... coinhive.

This is more of a PR stunt than really helping children...

I must admit that this way of raising money for an organization such as UNICEF does not look too serious-how many children will be fed and cured with this?It is also funny how they think such browser mining is perfectly safe for your computer,I wonder how many CPUs will be burned in this humanitarian action...

Also it is very hypocritical from UNICEF in Australia to be represented as benefactors in this way,Australia (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2017/oct/29/manus-island-dark-chapter-of-australian-immigration-poised-to-close) policy towards refugees is more than shameful and inhumane.After the shame they had thrown on themselves now someone should show them in better light and UNICEF will do this task.

It is good to see that they are taking advantage of the free will of other people by lending them their processing power to mine but it will also be good to see if they provide some kind of transparency on what is going on. From how much crypto they have earned to how much of it has been converted to Fiat and of course to where the money is being spended.

In relation to the quoted paragraph of the article, I think that aside from giving supplies that can only provide help temporarily, I think giving jobs to their parents and providings ways to develop their own food and water is a good long term solution that can be done by using their earned funds.

Certainly they are trying to reach sponsors from all parts of the world, and this- cryptocurrency market- is no exception. In this feat, they make money through people who are online. These people will then have nothing else to do but click on the page the UNICEF designated them in. Efficient, isn't it? Maybe they have come to terms with the fact that maybe most people would like to extend help, just that the latter does not want to be subjected to so many questions or processes before even sending in the cash they intend to donate. Otherwise stated, the UNICEF has finally found a convenient way to collect donations from people from all walks of life.
